Glasses on Rides
« on: 12 Apr 2009 @ 07:23PM »
I need some advice on the wearing of glasses on rides as last time we went my friend managed to lose hers on Nemmi and went round the rest of the day not able to see properly!

For those who need glasses, what would you suggest as ways of keeping her glasses secure this time round? she wants to go on ripsaw etc so they need to stay in place at all times...

any ideas would be much appreciated.
She could go without but it kind of ruins it for her as she cant see as well! I dont think she will wear contacts.

It's a bit hard really, I'm fine with just not wearing my glasses to the park. My dad put his glasses in his pockets usually but he has zips on his pockets.

The only thing that I can recommend for her is to either leave her glasses with the ride host or if she has a bag bring her glasses case with her and put them in there in the lockers.

I wouldn't recommend contact lenses on rollercoasters as mine have been very uncomfortable after going on a ride like Nemmy.

Take a jacket with zip pockets, I've also seen people wearing an elastic strip so that they can wear them whilst riding.

ok, thanks for the help, I think she will have to leave them with the operator again, its not worth her losing them again, and theres also the risk she could hit someone with them as they fall which was also a concern of mine.

You need a sports retainer. They're available off ebay for about £3, and are basically a piece of neoprene that fastens over the arms of your glasses and then around the back of your head to keep them on.

My mate just took his case around with him, and put the case in his coat pocket

Yeah, definitely what we call a 'strap-on' - lots of coaster enthusiasts even have a special RCCGB one! ;) They're the best way to keep glasses secure and they're quite easy to get hold of I think.

Regarding straps/bands in my experience these will be fine for all rides providing you get the right one and make sure its properly secured, I used to have a velcro one which would sometimes come undone.

Word of warning though, some rita hosts are picky about them and don't allow them to be used.  I've ridden rita many times with bands without trouble, but occasionally they will ask for them to be removed (which can be fiddly if you're already harnessed up).

I always take my glasses off on rides, so they are safely stored  away in a glasses case in a zipped up pocket.

Also, I always carry a spare pair in the car, just incase I somehow break or loose my normal pair  As once Ibroke a pair of glasses when I went to clean them after getting off the rapids.  They snapped in 1/2  :( , and I had to drive home with no glasses.  Had it of been dark I'd never of gotten home.

Before i switched to contacts, I used to take my glasses case with me and zip them in my coat pocket. Kind of ruined it for me though as I have really poor vision and couldnt see a thing going round the track :( God bless contact lenses!

I wear my glasses on all rides at Alton (except Rita which has a policy to remove them) and not once have they ever come close to even falling off. My guess is your friend either knocked them off during a ride accidently or they were not adjusted properly to stay on her face. But as many people have suggested a coaster strap is a handy thing to have. Local opticians sould sell them.

As a host, I advise guests that their glasses will be fine on, and it's preferable to carrying them in their hand/putting them in the storage cages. Some people refuse to believe me and won't wear them, others accept it and I've not had anyone come back from a ride having lost their glasses, even on Oblivion. :)

I wear them, but sometimes if they become loose I take them off. But all rides they're fine! I don't wear them on Submission though, nor Ripsaw. Also, I take them off for Water Rides as I am blinded by the water.
