Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

From drone videos we have seen, the welcoming is still standing. Could this be incase SW8 is delayed like the Smiler was, and they could reopen The Welcoming in March, like they did with The Sanctuary? I too was surprised to see The Welcoming seemingly still fully intact on the drone footage.  (I'd...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

From one excellent video to one which I feel should not have been posted! The countdown section is fine, but to add Nemesis on the end of it just doesn't fit the tone of the marketing campaign seen so far! If you play the latest video on YouTube, one of the suggested videos [from YouTube] at the en...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

Brilliant teaser video - well done Alton / their marketing agency.  I can't see the TV advert being too sinister or vague as to what SW8 is though.   Alton Towers will want to make SW8 appeal to as wide a range of people as possible.  Most people agree it's not going to be an intense ride, but more ...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

The footage is still on YouTube (as of 5mins ago) and is very easy to find.  It is impressive footage too.   I can only assume that Alton Towers are "as happy as they can be" about this footage - even though they are doubtless on reduced staff levels in the Marketing Dept between Christmas...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

If the trains were to have been delivered.. which way to Alton would you think would of been the route.. A50 to Uttoxeter and up through Alton.. or the back ways through Ashbourne.. I didn't want to say anything because I thought it wouldn't of been the trains, however on my way back home from work...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

Well Alton Towers have completely foxed me on Clue No2.  (& I am not asking for the answer either)... 1 and 3 were quite easy given the use of the Runes, but I've tried every word I can think of for Centre with 3 letters and nothing is correct.  Good luck to those who have cracked it!

Re: Future of the Monorail

A number of interesting thoughts raised in this thread!  Firstly, I agree that the monorail is showing it's age, even with the refurbishments it has had over recent years.  Worth noting that Europa Park also operate Von-Roll monorail trains practically identical to the Towers ones (& probably of...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Fantastic construction update - thanks!  SW8 is looking impressive & I look forward to March when we can ride it.   The only thing that struck me was the queue line fences - plain wood & lots of it.  I do hope these fences will be painted in some way otherwise they will, sadly, be festooned ...

Re: End of Season Review 2017

I visited Alton Towers 3 times this season & had very different experiences...  1st visit August Bank Holiday Monday.  Despite the fact the weather forecast has been good for the Bank Hol weekend for days (rare I know!) Alton Towers had cut staff to the bone.  1 person serving on the Ticket Upgr...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

Well fire certainly comes into play somewhere as there is yellow gas piping buried on the construction site (doubtless going to the tarpaulin-covered feature).  The gas piping emerges from a trench next to where the Burger Kitchen was & is on a large reel - doubtless for hooking up to an existin...

Re: Duel: Retheme, Replace or Remove?

Duel Alive was a massive pain in the backside when it comes to health and safety. Highly doubt it will make a return. Agree 100%.  Whilst Duel Alive was good, it was 100% obvious where the actors were, as they were all behind plastic fencing to keep them a safe distance from the track / moving ride...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Think it's clear to say we are definitely more than half way constructed now?!?!?! Getting exciting now :p GCI know what they are doing - but I think the installation of the bents is the faster part of the ride going vertical, as you just crane the bents in and bolt them into place.  Once the bents...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Leah & Joe have been discussing their compensation claims on a channel 5 show. Article here . Joe received £100,000 whereas Leah's claim should be resolved next year and be in the region of £2 million. I am amazed this is taking so long, given Merlins' early admission of liability & subsequ...

Re: SW8 Speculation and Discussion

I was just joking but it could actually work. There's a few problems to think about such as restraint style, moving floor, height of train etc but I think this idea has potential Good idea, but impossible to implement. On a B&M floorless coaster you are sitting well above the track due to the c...

Re: Drayton Manor

I reckon Drayton now so enforce an age restriction and guidelines for the Rapids for example anyone under 16 has to be accompanied by an adult to ensure the adult is responsible to enforce the rules and safety restriction to prevent any accidents although no way is it dmp fault at all! I'm very str...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Whilst SW8 has the "SW" tag, I think it will be aimed / marketed to the slightly younger & family orientated crowd. I suspect a 1.2m height restriction too which will help. (Just hope Towers Marketing team do a better job than they did with Th13teen - "the only coaster you'll ever...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

In a somewhat unexpected (and uncharacteristic) move, Towers have cut actual viewing windows into the wooden fence surrounding the SW8 construction site. While obviously some things will still be kept secret until they choose to reveal them, hopefully this indicates the Resort's intention to approa...

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

But to complete the "Big Six" challenge, the big six need to be "Available" as Towers now like to call it! From what I have read on here & other websites, it does seem like a disappointing opening weekend from a ride availability viewpoint. Not to mention the monorail breakdo...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

When the HSE announced the fine against Alton Towers last year, I didn't notice that there was a report in the Zip file attached to the press release http://press.hse.gov.uk/2016/alton-towers-owners-fined-over-smiler-crash/ . It is an expert witness report by Steven Flanagan, an independent consult...

Re: Towers Loving Care

It's amazing to see what difference a pressure washer can really do, I think this coming season we could be walking into a totally revamped park. Call me optimistic :P I can assure you that back in the early 2000's (so some 15yrs or so ago), pressure washing of all the block paving & paths thro...
