Re: Future of the Monorail

A number of interesting thoughts raised in this thread!  Firstly, I agree that the monorail is showing it's age, even with the refurbishments it has had over recent years.  Worth noting that Europa Park also operate Von-Roll monorail trains practically identical to the Towers ones (& probably of...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Fantastic construction update - thanks!  SW8 is looking impressive & I look forward to March when we can ride it.   The only thing that struck me was the queue line fences - plain wood & lots of it.  I do hope these fences will be painted in some way otherwise they will, sadly, be festooned ...

Re: End of Season Review 2017

I visited Alton Towers 3 times this season & had very different experiences...  1st visit August Bank Holiday Monday.  Despite the fact the weather forecast has been good for the Bank Hol weekend for days (rare I know!) Alton Towers had cut staff to the bone.  1 person serving on the Ticket Upgr...

Re: SW8 Speculation and General Discussion

Well fire certainly comes into play somewhere as there is yellow gas piping buried on the construction site (doubtless going to the tarpaulin-covered feature).  The gas piping emerges from a trench next to where the Burger Kitchen was & is on a large reel - doubtless for hooking up to an existin...

Re: Duel: Retheme, Replace or Remove?

Duel Alive was a massive pain in the backside when it comes to health and safety. Highly doubt it will make a return. Agree 100%.  Whilst Duel Alive was good, it was 100% obvious where the actors were, as they were all behind plastic fencing to keep them a safe distance from the track / moving ride...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Think it's clear to say we are definitely more than half way constructed now?!?!?! Getting exciting now :p GCI know what they are doing - but I think the installation of the bents is the faster part of the ride going vertical, as you just crane the bents in and bolt them into place.  Once the bents...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Leah & Joe have been discussing their compensation claims on a channel 5 show. Article here . Joe received £100,000 whereas Leah's claim should be resolved next year and be in the region of £2 million. I am amazed this is taking so long, given Merlins' early admission of liability & subsequ...

Re: SW8 Speculation and Discussion

I was just joking but it could actually work. There's a few problems to think about such as restraint style, moving floor, height of train etc but I think this idea has potential Good idea, but impossible to implement. On a B&M floorless coaster you are sitting well above the track due to the c...

Re: Drayton Manor

I reckon Drayton now so enforce an age restriction and guidelines for the Rapids for example anyone under 16 has to be accompanied by an adult to ensure the adult is responsible to enforce the rules and safety restriction to prevent any accidents although no way is it dmp fault at all! I'm very str...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Whilst SW8 has the "SW" tag, I think it will be aimed / marketed to the slightly younger & family orientated crowd. I suspect a 1.2m height restriction too which will help. (Just hope Towers Marketing team do a better job than they did with Th13teen - "the only coaster you'll ever...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

In a somewhat unexpected (and uncharacteristic) move, Towers have cut actual viewing windows into the wooden fence surrounding the SW8 construction site. While obviously some things will still be kept secret until they choose to reveal them, hopefully this indicates the Resort's intention to approa...

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

But to complete the "Big Six" challenge, the big six need to be "Available" as Towers now like to call it! From what I have read on here & other websites, it does seem like a disappointing opening weekend from a ride availability viewpoint. Not to mention the monorail breakdo...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

When the HSE announced the fine against Alton Towers last year, I didn't notice that there was a report in the Zip file attached to the press release http://press.hse.gov.uk/2016/alton-towers-owners-fined-over-smiler-crash/ . It is an expert witness report by Steven Flanagan, an independent consult...

Re: Towers Loving Care

It's amazing to see what difference a pressure washer can really do, I think this coming season we could be walking into a totally revamped park. Call me optimistic :P I can assure you that back in the early 2000's (so some 15yrs or so ago), pressure washing of all the block paving & paths thro...

Re: Towers Loving Care

CoasterCrazyChris - above - makes many very valid points. I would agree that Alton Towers has not been as bad as it currently is since the "dark years" of 2003-2005 when the place was run into the ground. What we did see in 2005/6 was a change of management team that really did turn the pl...

Re: The Smiler - General Discussion

I suspect a rebrand of The Smiler is highly unlikely for next season - if they had wanted to rebrand the ride, they would have done it during the period it was closed after the accident / over last Winters' closed season, so they could reopen with a ride slightly "distanced" from the event...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I have to say, it seems bizarre to me that 2 cars coming together can cause such damage to the occupants of the ride. Shouldn't there be an overghang or crumple zone or something? Like in a car, you have the passenger cage within which everything is designed to protect the occupants, and outside th...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Interesting facts / claims coming out in the court hearing - including Merlins' QC claiming it was not human error, despite both the HSE & Nick Varney (Merlins' CEO) going on record to say it was just that. Also quite bizarre that Merlin are admitting to running the ride with wind speeds of 10mp...

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

Really like the new Resort App - only thing worth noting was that it would not update from the "old" App on my iPhone - I had to delete the old and download the new from the App Store. So a slight mess-up from whoever coded the App for Towers/Merlin.

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

Interesting comments / observations on the previous page about the lack of rides / state of the Park this year. This forum is very pro-Alton Towers, but if people who are "warmed" to Alton Towers are making these observations, it should be worrying for Merlin. Earlier I was speaking to a f...
