Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Incorrect. What Dan quoted was "He said the kinetic energy involved in the crash on June 2 2015 was equivalent to “a family car of 1.5 tons having collided at about 90mph" My post was correct It seems that the prosecutor Bernard Thorogood lacks a basic knowledge of the equations of motion...

Re: Duel and the Gloomy Wood - A future?

I would really like them to do a breaking-the-fourth-wall type of Dark with Duel. Stop the ride carriages, and turn it into a walk through. The scenery would have to be made a lot stronger before the public could "interact" with it. Some of the effects would be risky if the riders were not...

How on earth is it costing so much?

Having to work round the current park will add significantly to the construction costs. A dedicated, empty, site would be a lot easier to design and build.

Minimising the impact to park operations will also add to the complexity and cost.

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

So if the crash happened at 20mp/h then that must mean the trains on smiler are around 6.75 tons. To turn 90mp/h into 20mp/h you divide 90 by 4.5 so you then have to multiply the 1.5 tons by the same value (4.5) equalling 6.75 tons. No- E k = 1/2 m v 2 so if the kinetic energy was equal and v c = s...

I thought that there was communication between park first responders with the ambulance control room using their Airwave (emergancy services communication system) before that.

I personally think they should add another drop sequence to give the illusion that the monster is pulling its victims back down to avoid them escaping.

I think the drop tower is a single drop/slow raise type so it would not be able to do a complex drop sequence.

those who could afford to go there would probly rather go to a proper theme park than a parked up traveling fair teeming with Glaswegian chavs!

Would that not be "Glaswegian neds" rather than chavs.

Re: Nemesis removal

It's probably quite tricky to know for sure. Cost:benefit analysis is probably done with the following considerations (plus some others I couldn't think of): Staff costs would also be considered- some rides need more staff than others. Another aspect would be how much it competes with a new ride. F...

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train - New for 2016

Don't know how many have come across the following video, but it gives some insights into the mechanism of things. Discovered it on my YouTube wanderings today. ( Do not look if you do not want to see inside the ride! ). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLnmMu4NFkA So they have not licenced IP from ...

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

The terrorists will go for the easiest target that gives the highest "reward". Secure one venue (theme park/ visitor attraction/ stadium/ airport/ shopping centre/ etc.) and they will choose another. On the world stage I think that Madam Tussaud's and the London Eye are Merlin's two most p...

Re: SW8

Maybe longest woodie. I don't know what the record is but it's a massive space for a coaster If they are going for a longest record there is little difference between wood and steel. World's longest is not a highly contested category as can be seen from the top three list: 1st Steel Dragon 2000 Ste...

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train - New for 2016

I believe they said in the press releases that your outcome and ride experience could be completely different from the person next to you so it wouldn't work having different tunnels for different endings. For that to happen the end (and probably most of the rest of it) would have to be full person...

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train - New for 2016

I like how theatrical the lighting in the building appears to be. Very atmospheric. I doubt that is the final lighting, I would expect very carefully controlled illumination, with use of colours and gobos (patterns). The final photo has too much of the modern ceiling lit- something that breaks the ...

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train - New for 2016

I would expect them to keep the people who have ridden the ride separate from those who are still to ride to keep up the suspense.

Requiring the leaving riders to leave the platform before the new riders enter it would reduce the capacity significantly as it would take some time.

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

From the BBC news article the man was caught bringing the gun into one of the hotels, not a theme park. It is one thing providing security screening a the entrance to a park, where there is already a controlled entrance but to provide screening to the rest of the resort would be a nightmare. Custome...

Re: Derren Brown's Ghost Train - New for 2016

If it is full VR (no real world view for the rider) there would be little point having an elaborate ride mechanism, instead a bank of simulator bases would be sufficient, Star Tours style. Visual effects, sets, smoke, lighting and projection would not be needed for the ride portion of the attraction...

Re: Do you ever look at films and think...

Wow, with all the effort that goes into making a film, like the building of animatronic animals and huge sets that are used, why can't we get some decent scenes and animations added to Duel or a new dark ride. The effort that goes into making films seems to be massive when compared to the dark ride...
