Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Great photos, I couldn't get a close up view on my last trip. I would guess it's to do with the lift/launch. If it is an LSM style launch then it will need a cooling system and potentially a battery/capacitor as to not strain the power grid too much. The control system also needs somewhere to live. ...

Re: SW8 Construction Discussion

Shameless plug of my video from Friday:  https://youtu.be/yYPSWYxrwq8 The first drop does look more banked than say Wodan however the curve also seem tighter. I thought it was already confirmed it'll have a 'Magnetic Launch' which I take as an LSM assisted launch, maybe 10mph at the most. The curve ...

Re: SW9

At some point the monorail cars (and possibly track) will be too old. According to Wikipedia the monorail cars were built for the 1986 World Expo. The Cable Car is also from a similar date although I believe it's been like Triggers Broom with so much of it replaced over the years. There's a real pos...

Re: PortAventura/ Ferrari Land - August 2017

Check the opening times too, during the summer the main park is open until 0000 or even 0300! Ferrari Land is open until 2000 at the moment too. Use this to your advantage as families start leaving when the sun goes down.  Ticketing wise: I tend to buy directly from the PA website. The current offer...

Re: Thorpe Park - The Future

Merlin aren't going to close Colossus until they absolutely need to. Similarly they aren't going to put any more money in than they need to. If they've been replacing lift chains and gearboxes it's because they *had* to. Don't expect new trains unless Intamin say the current ones are unsafe/not usab...

Re: The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure

I finally got the chance to ride today, I was very impressed! Along with the work on Hex it has reassured me that sometimes Merlin do some excellent work. I still need to ride DBGT (I know I know!) but I hope the same attention has been paid to that attraction as well.

Re: Thorpe Park - General Discussion

I would assume (unless someone can correct me) the same team of engineers installing the 2 new rides are the same working on the existing rides. We all know the difficulties Stealth, Colossus and Slammer have had this year so I would imagine all their time has been spent on those rather than the new...

Re: Disneyland Resort Paris

From memory Tower of Terror preshow (video) was in French with English subtitles and the ride attendants spoke both French and English. I'm fairly certain Ratatouille was the same too.

Re: PortAventura World

The train takes just over an hour and is around €8-9 each way. The Spanish trains website is: http://www.renfe.com/EN/viajeros/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (note the station name is Port Aventura, 2 words). I know RENFE isn't the most reliable, I got stuck for 45 minutes outside a...

Re: Food

Alton had 'Quorndogs' at their hot dog stands this week, they looked rather tasty! I can't remember if the price was any different.

On a similar note: I wish they had more sugar free soft drinks options. Diet Coke gets boring after a while. I wish they had more Freestyle machines to solve this issue.

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere (I'm on mobile which makes searching an issue!) but I've noticed a few tweaks to operations this year. 1. All Smiler OTSRs are now checked twice by different members of staff 2. I'm each of the control boxes there's a piece of laminated paper with numbe...

Re: Colossus

I seem to remember Colossus having gearbox issues either last season or the one before. If that's the case then it may point to an inherent problem with the motor/gearbox design. To be honest looking at the gearbox/chain lift issues, size/type of the trains, and the lower than ideal height you can s...

Re: Big Six Challenge

I don't know who else uses the Android App but my Alton Towers App got a 53mb update yesterday. A few things mentioned in the change log but nothing about the Big Six Challenge though. Judging from the size I would say it's probably preparing for the Big Six Challenge. Far too large for the new 'lea...

Re: Thorpe Park - General Discussion

I'm not at the park today but checking the app shows the following rides as 'Closed': Colossus, I'm a Celeb, Rumba Rapids, Storm Surge, Slammer, Angry Birds 4D, Banana Ride, Wet Wet Wet and Zodiac. Is this accurate? If so it seems Thorpe (like Alton) has some issues with reliability at the start of ...

Re: Galactica

As much as I would also like to see the newest phones as part of the Galactica VR it's unlikely to be the S8. They would have to be fully tested and they wouldn't want to do that whilst the ride is 'live'. As someone who works for a large corporation I know how much testing is required for something...

As was pointed out to me on Facebook Slammer is no longer listed on Thorpes website under rides. Is this a new thing or should I start the rumour mill up again?

Re: Saw - The Ride

I rode Saw a couple of times during the Passholders Preview day on Sunday. I had 2 observations: 1) It was SO much smoother than last year. Maybe it was running slower than usual due to the temperature/early in the season? 2) The indoors section was much brighter, you could see the section of track ...

Re: Rumba Rapids

Maybe the tree cutting is to do with ground testing? Didn't they do something similar on the island behind SWARM recently? Although we're assuming any new ride(s) will go to that island it's always good to have a Plan B. Having ridden the Rapids yesterday it kinda feels half done, like they have a p...

Re: Colossus

I think it's well past new trains, I think the damage to the track is done now. I've ridden Altair (Cinecitta World) which has the the 'new' lapbar restraints and it was pretty rough after just a year. The new trains required newer and wider track so it's not a question of dropping them in quickly. ...
