Chessington African Adventures - February Half Term

Fri Jan 17, 2014 9:37 pm

http://www.chessington.com/plan-your-tr ... tures.aspx

More details have been released on the february half-term event African Adventures, it would appear as though they are opening parts of the theme park (Africa and Tomb Blaster) for the event. Sounds much bigger than last year's event and will hopefully open more of the park, allowing a good peak at works that are going on.

If I'm honest, it seems a bit lame to anyone over the age of 5 ...

I'm thinking of taking my two children to Alton Towers for the day in half term weekend with two of their friends.
It's only £3 each more if booked in advance and we have MP,s.
More rides and attractions and the whole park area (except x sector and towers as will still have scarefest setup inside) and is open a hour longer till 4pm and has much more to do.

2 hours extra drive each way but it would be worth it.

They need to have more rides open to make it worth it

Chessington ought to open dragon's fury. Yeah, it won't happen, but it is right next to Africa and it would make me more enthusiastic (though I probably will still go!)

Also, it says parking very limited. Does this mean that there's some event or something taking up half the car park?

Chessington need to set peoples expectations low for the half term opening. Last year there was lots of angry comments on the Facebook page from people who didn't seem to realise the whole park isn't open. It's better for them to advertise it as zoo only with some kids activities and then any rides that are open are a bonus.

If I am not mistaken there is a park and ride service into Kingston from Chessington's car park during the winter.
However I am not thinking this ends in January......

I think they only have the North/Lodge Gate car park open for this event.

I don't know if anybody have realised this, but Chessington are actually opening less rides for this year's  AA than lasts. Last year they had Black Buccaneer, Bubbleworks, Carousel, Safari Skyway and Seastorm, as well as the usual Hocus Pocus Hall. Where as this year, all they've confirmed is Tomb Blaster and Hocus Pocus Hall.

I can only guess they may open more but weather dependant. As by the looks of the map, it would appear that Market Square and Pirates Cove are still receiving major works as part of the £5 million share. Implying that Tomb Blaster and Madagascar will be available through Mexicana, or on the Zufari path by Wanyama. Either way, the only attractions they could open would be Jungle Bouncers, Flying Jumbos, Rattlesnake, Toadies, and possible Zufari. Presuming that Rameses Revenge and Scorpion Express are still receiving major works, and that Skyway is still having its station refurbished/track missing by Seastorm.

Anyhow, we will still be able to get great pics of Scorpion Express from Mexican Cantina, Amazu from Penguin Cove/Wanyama, Rameses Revenge en route to TB and Madagascar, and maybe Market Square from Pizza Pasta. :)

Don't forget the Sealife Tent Centre

You never know they may open some more rides, but the thing is last year they were very over subscribed so they are only advertising a little and if they open more it is a bonus.

We could see Rattlesnake and Jumbos open, but until the first day they open we won't really know for sure as weather depending some rides may not be able to open.

What people are forgetting is this is a Zoo day event and any rides are extra. The focus is on the Zoo and I always feel sorry for Chessington as everyone always focuses on the rides and not the Zoo. But with a small selection of rides and the Zoo do compliment each other.

I think their main problem with the theme park side of things is that all the really reliable and easy to maintain rides (i.e. Black Buccaneer, SeaStorm, Bubbleworks) are all on the east side of the park, which is being refurbished this year. Not to mention the Creaky Cafe damage. :(

On the west side, two attractions are receiving heavy maintainance anyway (Scorpion Express & Rameses Revenge). All they can potentially open is Rattlesnake, Jumbos, Jungle Bouncers and possibly Zufari. Obviously as well as Tomb Blaster. God knows how they are getting people to the Wanayama Village this time, both of the pathways to it are either blocked by Azteca construction or Amazu construction. Unless they take guests of an amazing tour of the storage site behind the education centre. :P

I'm quite impressed they have managed to open the theme park this half term anyway. :D

Wanyama is closed. It's open to hotel guests only at the moment.

Wayama was indeed open

Here's a quick overview of yesterday:

0945: Standing in the freezing cold outside, waiting fir gates to open.
1000: Gates open. Headed straight to Tomb Blaster, knowing it will be busier later.
1010: Tomb Blaster had no queue, but took 10 minutes for a 5 year old t.o chicken out then have to do re-do restraints etc.
1020: Headed to Flying Jumbos. Had 2 goes :D :D Saw some amazing views of Scorpion express. It does indeed look like it will be without rock.
1035: Had a visit to Hocus Pocus Hall
1045: Walked around the SEALIFE centre
1100: Went around Trail of the Kings
1115: Creepy Caves. Dangerously busy. There was literally no oxygen. One of the worst theme park experiences of my life. No chance to appreciate the reptiles.
1130: Watched (incredibly busy) Sealion show
1200: Had a surprisingly nice hot chocolate from the Coffee Hut. This was bad timing, as the Madagascar show starts at 12, but we just tried to block it out.
1240: Start heading back, but admire Scorpion Express on the way.
13:00 Head home after a short but mostly pleasant day.
