Re: The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure - 2017

Sun Jan 01, 2017 10:10 am

As MakoMania just posted, Chessington World of Adventures Resort have officially announced Th Gruffalo River Ride Adventure' and, perhaps unsurprisingly, are marketing it as 'the World's First Gruffalo Ride'.

SouthParks News have summed up all the key information for the new ride which is due to open in March. Although the precise location hasn't explicitly been confirmed, the description of the ride on the Resort's website pretty much confirms it will be in the former Bubbleworks building.

I love the boats! Remind me of the original Bubbleworks boats.

Not only this but it seems that many people are now quite pleased with this, with one person saying "I'm not so dissapointed that Bubbleworks is going now because my son loves this!" Which is nice to hear.

Just depends on how well they execute it.

Mass vinyl CGI images is not the way forward. Proper theming, effects and excitement will make this a winner.

Hopefully they will keep the fountain ending.

Exactly my thoughts too.

The reaction to Chessington's announcement has been overwhelming positive by the wider market from what I've seen, so provided it's faithful to the IP (which I'm sure it will be) it will probably meet their expectations.

However, for it to be a truly worth successor to Bubbleworks, Merlin should be looking to exceed expectations by perhaps including a couple of decent animatronics and plenty of animated elements. It would be quite depressing to float past mostly static scenes where there is a reliance on vinyl imagery.

No, it mentions some characters mouse, fox, owl, snake and of course the Gruffalo. We also get a look at the potential ride exterior. It then says about themed rooms and shows the ride logo. :)

Here are some screenshots.

If the theming is as good as shown in these pictures, we will have, in my opinion, a good successor to Bubbleworks!

A post on the official Gruffalo website confirms some additional details about what the creature's arrival means for the Resort, including a potential new name for the area of 'Wild Woods'.
The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure – a world first - has landed in the Wild Woods at Chessington World of Adventures Resort

...

The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure will be accompanied by many other Gruffalo offerings across the Resort, including four brand new Gruffalo themed hotel rooms in the Chessington Safari Hotel a brand new retail shop and food outlet both offering themed goodies, character meet and greets with The Gruffalo himself plus much much more!

I personally think this is a great name as it links to Vampire as well (at least in my opinion). It also means that the area doesn't necessarily need to be drastically changed meaning the buildings many love can remain intact.

The more I watch the advert the more I grow to like it. The first time I watched it the other week I wasn't too keen on it, but now I'm actually looking forward to trying it out! I don't know if I've mentioned it in here, but the concept art for the station does look rather nice, so hopefully if Merlin stick to that style all the way throughout the attraction it will be rather good! I think it's a great replacement for Bubbleworks because the number of comments I have seen on FaceBook such as "My son will love this" is unreal, so this could be a big winner for Chessington!
Ride count 2017: 422!
Ride count since the beginning of 2015: 933!
Cred count: 70!

Lets prepare for the 120 minute wait times to start rolling in!!

I also think that this ride could be pretty good, yes, it isn't Bubbleworks but Chessington appear to be doing a great effort with this ip and you never know, it could've been the Ice Age River Adventure - being very 'meh'. Hopefully, the fountain finale will remain, and the attraction will feature AA's, immersive sets and a cool queue line soundtrack! I am very impressed so far!

Thinking about it, what if the finale is where you actually meet the Gruffalo in a way like Kong saving the guests? Also those concept art does look good

As posted on SouthParks Facebook, the new TV advert featuring The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure is now available online. Whilst Owen has posted the key screenshots earlier in this topic, the full advert does give a good idea of the kind of journey guests will go on. It'll be interesting to see how this is executed as from the concept art it has the potential to be very good.

The more I see and hear about this the more I'm liking it, which isn't something I was expecting to say this early into the year. I really hope Chessington pull this off to a high standard

I'm sorry, but this name is awful.

Firstly, don't judge a book by its cover. Its the attraction as whole we should be judging, and until it opens we can't do that.
Its just a name, and given Chessington's (And Merlin's) reputation at using rubbish name's it comes as no surprise.

But I was making an assessment on the name of the ride, which is undeniably bland. Perhaps my irritable post didn't make it particularly clear, but I'm trying to give this re-theme as much of a chance as I would any ride, at least until I know everything there is to know. But seeing as there is nothing more to develop with the name (as it's confirmed), it's fair to pass judgement on the name, which is, for me, a big part of the magic. As a kid, "I want to go on Bubbleworks!" was a phrase that you could realistically see a child saying and feeling the magic. "I want to go on The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure!" (or as it will be, "I want to go on that Gruffalo one!") is not the same, and it's a real shame that the first thing we've heard about this potentially brilliant ride is that something as simple yet important as its name is a disappointment.

Dom wrote:
It is a shame, if the rumors of the area change are true, but we have to stop being sentimental over things. Theme Parks are a business and they will always need to change with the times to attract new guests. Whilst it pain's me to say it, Vampire will eventually leave the park. Yes its a popular ride, but sometimes things need to go.

I've been very aware of Vampire's imminent death for some time now (it's the headliner of my local park after all). It's a shame, but I honestly think that it would be an acceptable price to pay if we end up with that jungle motorbike coaster as its replacement. What I see as a shame if the rumour of the area change is true is that the original Transylvania was an excellent example of how an area could appeal to both the youngest and oldest guests in the park, which is what made Bubbleworks, and the area as a whole, such an all-rounder. It troubles me that this corner of the park seems to have a long-term plan of becoming a stand-out kiddie area (which is, to be fair, something that Chessington lacks) because it would severely limit the audience of this iconic family dark ride. The ride would have to really special and really well-marketed for anyone who's grown out of the Gruffalo to want to ride it if it's in the middle of a big area of a similar theme.

Honestly I think we should just get used to this way of naming attractions - its hardly the first time we have received a meh name from a fair few parks (across the world) recently. Also, the area rename is now confirmed as said a few posts up and I personally prefer it to Transylvania as "Wild Woods" brings everything together. Also, how is a family ride replacing a family ride an indicator of turning Wild Woods into a kiddie area, as for now we have no idea what might happen with Vampire especially after having some of its theming refurbished - which to me doesn't scream "imminent death". Then to the comments about the ride needing to be good to appeal to older guests, surely that goes for Bubbleworks as well? I only ever went on it as a joke or with a small child personally whereas i can see myself often going on The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure due to it reminding me of a world I haven't visited in years, unlike Bubbleworks which really only appealed to the hardcore adult fans who went on it as a child which would equally limit the market.

My advice would be don't count your chickens before they've hatched based on the name of a ride and your assumption of when an equally, if not more iconic ride will be discontinued. :)

I'm not sure what everyone was expecting - they obviously had to include "The Gruffalo"in the ride name, so some sort of descriptive subtitle is appropriate to accompany it. Sure, IP rides have had better names but if no-one's making a fuss over "SAW: The Ride", I fail to see the issue.

This article states that Merlin have a ten year license for The Gruffalo IP as well as including the opening date of Saturday 18th March, which was also stated on the Chessington Holidays site and initially in Chessington's press release before being changed to March/Spring 2017.
