RCT3 Cheats, Tips, Links and Tutorials

Sun Jan 10, 2010 9:21 pm

There have been a lot of posts lately asking "where did you get XXX scenery", or "how did you do XXX". I thought it might be an idea to pool our RCT knowhow in one place.

This is not a topic for asking questions (we already have the quick questions topic for that.) Rather, this is for people to share their wisdom with the TTF/RCT community.

I'll start the ball rolling (and coasting :P ) :

RCT3 cheat codes:

David Walsh: You can now press CTRL + U to remove on screen icons. Good for taking screenshots. Press again to bring the icons back.

M Brookes:
Allow walls etc to be built on path edges.

John Wardley: No height limit on coasters.

David Braben: No speed limit on lift chains, launches, or block breaks.

John D Rockefeller:
Get £10,000 in your pocket. Can be used many times!

Mornington Crescent:
Allows shops etc to be built underground. Use shift to lower them.

Sam Denney: All guests ride every coaster before leaving the park.

Jon Roach:
All rides irresistible to guests.

Andrew Gillett:
Increase park value.

Frontier: Rides never break down.

Alistair Lindsay:
Alters the speed of sound effects in pause and fast forward.

Rick Griffiths: Changes the inside of tunnels from rubble to sharks

Andrew Thomas:
Decrease track friction. (can help when importing rides from RCT 1 & 2)

James Hunt:
A beach buggy will drop from the sky into your park. You can drive around and see your rides from a whole new perspective! Use the arrow keys to steer.

Jonny Watts:
Peepcam: See through the eyes of this guest.

Guido Fawkes:
Unlock the advanced fireworks creator.

Mouse: Guests stand around looking at the ground where your mouse pointer is.

Chris Sawyer:
Guests jump for joy.

Atari: All guests laugh.

Shifty:
Guests dance.

Make Me Sick:
All guests throw up.

Photo Story:
Guests take lots of photos.

Ghost Town: No new guests may enter the park, but existing guests can leave.

A Hitchcock:
Lots of ducks appear.

Press F10 to take a screenshot.

Pictures will be saved to:
‘User’ My DocumentsMy PicturesRCT3

Press Ctrl + Shift + F11 to start / stop recording a video.
The game will slow down and look like it has paused… DON’T WORRY! When you play the video back it will be at full speed. It may take hours to record a POV of a ride, so just let it run while you go and do something else. Check progress every 10 minutes or so. Remember to turn all your graphics settings to maximum before recording!
Videos will be saved to:
‘User’ My DocumentsMy VideosRCT3

Press Ctrl + Shift + 0 To plan a "Flying Camera" route. This brings up the worlds most un-user-friendly interface. There is a brilliant tutorial here which explains it better than I could. All I can say is keep practicing with it.

To use your own music in the game:
Copy the music files you want into the folder:
C:Program FilesAtariRollerCoaster Tycoon 3Music

To use your own images on billboards: Copy the image into:
‘User’ My Documents
It should be selectable when you place a billboard.

Really useful topic Diogoj42  , especially the website links.

Simple Tip: Recording a video.

Although the "Flying Camera" can be set up while the game is paused a videos will naturally record when the game is in play. So remember to check two things:

A) The time of day/night. Don’t attempted to shoot any daytime shots if the park timer is after 5:00 PM
B) The weather. Check that the weather display (on the top menu) shows only one picture to be sure that the shot will look the same as on the preview.

Leaving the “Flying Cam” won't stop the recording so make sure it’s switched off before exiting the level.

Billboards:

If you have Vista then this post has the information on how to get the billboards working:

If you put a no entry sign next to the exit/entrance peeps won't leave or enter the park but if you use a one sided sign so the writing is not facing the entrance/exit then more peeps will still come in the park

The downside to using this technique is that park rating plummets because of tired and unhappy guests (I tried it in RCT1). To avoid this make sure that you switch the signs "No entry" option on and off so that guests that are low on stats can leave the park.

---- Post Info Added ----

Here is my little tutorial for CTR's, I don't have the best grimmer so I hoping It’s understandable.

A basic guide to using the CTR Creator V0.85

The basic use of the editor is to merge carts and tracks from any Roller Coaster Tycoon model. It’s mostly in German but you can change it to English when you open the editor.

Installation:
In case you don’t know where to download version 0.85 from I think I got it from here: http://www.vodhin.org/e107/download.php?view.1292
Save the files somewhere easy to find and extract them from the compressed form.

There should be a load of txt files and the creator itself. The 3 most important files are the CTR_Creator V0.85, CoasterRideListe_by_SLiPCoR and List_of_all_TrackSections_(with_AddOns)_V6. I will explain why when we get to them.

Getting started:
Double click on the editor (CTR_Creator V0.85) to open it. When it’s open it should be displayed as a grey box with 3 options on the top and 13 underneath. Most of them will be greyed out but the easiest method is the separate box in the bottom left, labelled GUI for CTR_BahnDaten.

Once you have clicked on it a new panel called “CTR_Creator Assistent” will appear.
By default it should be set up correctly but there is an error concerning the value ‘0,100’ so select the “Open Ride” button and open the beginners’ template.

I’m going to guide you through as if you haven’t opened the template but the first time I used the editor I learned by looking at the pre-made custom tracks.

Creator Assistent:

The editor should be open under Ride properties (second bar down from the top, far left).
The rides name and description box will be the exact wording used for the rides icon in game, no matter what you save the file as.
The ride icon is a dropdown displaying all the in game icons for rides.
The ride category is (I’m guessing) the location the ride will appear in game. You will probably want to use “Roller Coaster Steel”.
The most important part of this page is the Car types. The left box displays available models and the right displays the one that will appear on your ride. Right click in the right hand box to remove all of the current ride carts. You can double-click on any name from the left list you want and they will be added to your ride.
(Remember that an inverted cart on a normal track or a cart that doesn’t fit the track will look silly).

The next section on the bar near the top is Tracks and Sections. At this point you will want to open the file called “CoasterRideListe_by_SLiPCoR” and possibly “List_of_all_TrackSections_(with_AddOns)_V6” If you are looking for a specific part.
Clear the "Chosen sections" area by right clicking on it.
Use the “CoasterRideListe_by_SLiPCoR” to find the base ride that you want the attraction to be. For example I choose a Wild Mouse by looking down the left hand column of the list and followed the row to where it says track set 8. Once you know the track set you can return to the editor and click on the “Choose track” option in the lower left hand corner. Find the one that you want on the drop down menu and select it. All of the track pieces should then appear in the box. If you want to combine the ride with another click on “Choose track” again and select the next track. This time only pieces that are not:
A) already on the other track set
B) impossible to exist with another piece (example: The ride can only have one type of straight track)
Should appear.
On your first attempt it might be easier to just choose one track type because this stage is most likely to cause errors in game.

Next you can move onto general settings. Everything should be set up for a basic roller coaster but there will automatically be a mistake on this page if you haven’t loaded the basic template. The build cost could read 16,000 but I discovered that all , are meant to be . so the actual box should show 16.000. Whenever you find this mistake on a page you will need to change it or the ride won’t be created.

Leave the advanced settings as they appear but make sure to remove the mistake mentioned above.

I’m not sure how to use the AddOn section but on most rides you will need to highlight the track sections you have used. Simply double click on the correct track numbers and they will be added to the section below.

On Statistics you need to apply the default value for roller coasters and also remove the comma/full stop problem.

Then you should be done.

Selecting Save Ride will create a .txt file which you can reload at any time.
If it allows you to save then the editor has picked up no major flaws with your new ride.

Selecting Create Ride will create the correct files for the game (.ovl). Once the files have been named the installation pop up should appear. Select on the ride you just created and select install. The files are then installed to the right directory so you don’t need to do that manually.

The new ride will now appear in game, and unless I have left anything out I think that’s all you basically need.
Just note that if the ride crashes the game the first time just try tweaking a few things and hopefully it will work on the next attempt.
If anyone has any suggestions for improvement or spots a mistake in the tutorial then just PM me and I will change it.

Thanks to Captain for testing it.

*****

Bonus Tip: The Tilt section for “track 3” has been deliberately removed because of problems with certain car types. However if you wish to use this component it has not be locked from the editor. Simply save the ride as a .txt file and add the word “Tiltsection” at the end of all the other track types. When you convert the file to .ovl the Tilt section will be included.
After carrying out tests with the Lay Down roller coaster I have only discovered two glitches. See the video “Iroma: Project Prototype” at 3:10 for information about the Loading and Saving glitch’s.

Another CS/CFR site.

Don't be put off by the German, you can change the language and they often have old sets that aren't available anywhere else!

Just a few queries :)

a) Can someone post me a link to a good station creation set, and DazMatze's SwizzIt - I can't find it anywhere D:

b) How do you install cutom cars? Youtube or google isn't helping too much!

a) There are a few things you could try...
  • Stuk71 sets are good for station platforms.
  • Coinich made animated gates for stations.
  • Any wall sets work for the building, go nuts.

Links are at the top of the page for CS.
All of DasMatze's sets can be found here.

b) Have a look here

Hope this helps!

For future reference, I think the idea is to post tips in this thread so it is an easy to use guide. There is a "Quick Questions" thread stickied for just that!

Creating Custom Scenery

Creating your own custom scenery is actually a lot simpler than it may seem. The difficulty is finding everything that you need. Here is a list of useful downloads in order to get started:

The RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Object Importer is the most important and does exactly what the name suggests :). However the download is incomplete and a file called "mingwm10.dll" is required to make the program run on most machines. This can be downloaded from Vodhin's misc downloads and placed in the "rct3importer-v18b2-svn130-dist" folder (wherever you saved it).

The next link is to a basic tutorial I used to help understand the importers interface:
Beginner's Tutorial for the RCT3 Custom Scenery Importer

The two external components you need to make custom scenery are textures and .ase model files.
The tutorial above explains about appropriate pixel sizes and I’m sure I don't need to explain about image files.
Getting the .ase files are slightly harder. The most basic software (and the one I have experience in) is Google SketchUp.
Creating the model is simply a matter of drawing what you want and adding the textures. There are a few good tutorials on Vodhin’s Tips and tricks.
You’ll need to use a couple of plugins. The first is the ASE Exporter which needs to be downloaded into
Program FilesGoogleGoogle SketchUp 7Plugins

Another useful group off plugins to download is RCT3Robin`s Sketchup Plugins and place the files in the same location as above. I have only used the "rct3.rb" file as it shows the size of a square tile in-game.
To view the plugins on the SketchUp tool bar run sketch up and select Windows > preferences > Extensions and tick the "Ruby Script examples".

There are lots of other tutorials out there but these are a few useful links that made Custom Scenery easier for me to understand. Most tutorials skip out the basics such as finding the extra file for the importer. Hopefully the links above will offer a helpful starting place.

Dear administrators, could this thread not become a sticky, as it is so helpful to look up when planning a new park.

As new threads come in, its getting harder to find!

On a serious note, this kind of thread should always be near the top of the RCT and No Limits forum as it will help people who need help with CS, CTR etc.

I've just come across this, not sure if it's been mentioned before:

DazMatze's RCT3 Island: Cheat Group

- Advanced fireworkeditor
- Unlimited buildingheight
- High chainliftspeed
- Everyone rides flatrides
- Everyone rides coasters
- Attractions won't break
- Walls placable on the same tile of a path
- Ctrl+U turns off the HUD
- Videos with a larger filesize than 2MB can be used as a billboard

[s:186ydnvj]Videos on billboards, eh? Perhaps this could be combined with ImagineerJohn's Animated Billboards and the AP-DR for some sort of Spiderman-like ride?[/s:186ydnvj] :?

Edit: Ignore my previous comment. I've given these a try, and there's not a cats chance in hell that you could do that with billboards. For one point, video only works on the static original billboards, and even then, all 'video' means is that the game shows an odd frame of the video every few seconds. #-o

Seems like advise ^^ I'll try as my custom scenery never works.

Also advise for rct3 = don't buy vista if u get lots of custom scenery as my vista is confusing and billboards don't work without looking on YouTube. I hate vista .. :(
