Last year was my first Alton Towers visit in a few years and had only just found out about the refurb of, 'The Flume'. To be honest, I was quite excited about this. One thing that did worry me is that it had a sponser and I feared that this sponser (Imperial Leather) would completely take over the ride. So i got there on the day and saw the new Flume and my prediction was right. Wherever there was 'The Flume', there was
Imperial Leather. It was disappointing to see this because simply, i don't like seeing the sponser everywhere on a ride (if it has one). Nonetheless, the theming from first look was not bad at all. It is themed like a bath/shower. The ducks and showers looked great.
We stepped into the queue and i thought to myself, "I love the way they have made the queue line surround the last drop". It is rather well done because, when you are queuing, you can watch people's faces on the drop and it can be a time killer. The queue moves quite quickly and you pass the vending machines. I do have a complaint and question about them though.
1) They never have anything in them!
2) Why are they 5 minutes from the station and not at the beginning of the queue. I thought you are not supposed to eat/drink on the rides?
Then you reach the station. The boats are well themed because they are themed as a bathtub and have taps on the end. I liked this idea. You step into the wet boat and begin your journey. The first part is just a few corners and then a small, rather pointless drop but does get you excited. Then, for a minute give or take, the ride couldn't be more boring! You just go through a few hundred metres of corners! Nothing at all. Just swerving through woodland. I really couldn't see the point in this. Then you finally come out of the swirly woodland part and then go into the dark. My friend told me that at the end of the tunnel, a duck jumps out. I was actually really looking forward to seeing that

.
Through the tunnel where there is a drop where you get a bit wet and then out you come. When i went, there was no duck. At this point i was still thinking this ride is a big letdown as there was not really anything to enjoy and there was no theming at all (throughout the ride). Then you turn and face the way you came. You approach the lift hill to prepare for your final, big drop. The lift doesn't take that long. Be warned though: if you are at the back and the boat is filled with water, i think you will get a bit wet

. Now, you are at the top and about to have your drop. You can see the rest of Merrie England now which is a good view. The bathtub begins it's drop and you pull your silly screaming face for the camera and splash. You have now been soaked. After this you are all laughing whilst saying, "Im soaked!". The ride is not over just yet. There are only a few corners left but on one of those corners, there is a shower which comes on and off and if you under it when it's on, you may get even wetter which just adds to the fun. You approach the station, step off and view/buy the on-ride photo.
So, The Flume is a good log flume but nothing special. It is well themed around the front but the woodland part it abysmal. One of the good points about the ride is that there are 3 drops. The Flume is the perfect ride for families and to ride on a summer's day, but nobody can go to Alton Towers without riding it. The laughs are just great.
Is it better than before though? Personally i do prefer the past Flume but the new one does have better theming. The problem with the new Flume is that the theming is non-existant for the woodland area (which is also bad) and there is too much advertisment of the sponser which takes away the magic.
Overall a good ride and is a ride you must go on but i do prefer the older Flume. I remember getting wetter on that one
