Alton Towers and the Fans
Post Posted: Thu 21st Aug 2008 20:10

I'm sure that with the extortionate rate Alton Towers charge for their hotels (and yes they are well themed and its nice to be on the resort but there are nicer hotels anywhere at a much lower price) they really can afford to put some cheaper rates out.

Ive not stayed there in over a year simply because I dont feel they represent value for money.

But as for enticing groups why don't alton give a promotion to the likes of us, ata and the fan sites. If you read TPR and similar other parks seem to love the enthusiasts, give them discounts on hotels and ERT on rides to keep the enthusiasts happy. Why doesnt alton offer this sort of thing to their fans?

I know previously some behaviour put Alton abit at "arms length" but recently it has improved and I think if there was abit more recognition for the people who love the park, there would be less chance of mis-behaviour and alot more respect.

Even if it was out of season, and they just said "ok ttf, the hotels are quiet and we will offer you XX amount of rooms for half price." I would be so thrillied for thinking wow they do appreciate their fans and know with the amount of cash we pump into that place all the time they are giving us a break on the money.

Boo alton, BOOO!

It is clear that Alton Towers are not interested in our "community" (i hate using that word, but I guess there's no other word...!) in the way that some other parks are.

Flamingoland are very interested in theirs, Europa-Park have an annual day where they invite fans for free to conferences, ERT, tours etc... Even Disney have various things for fans. The Customer Council was a good start, but now that's fallen flat on its face even though the park got a lot out of it!

Ah well.

:(

TPR may well pay for that? Even so, it is a little sad that they get all that and the likes of TT can't.

out of curiosity have TTF ever looked at hosting something similar to this?

I know there are prices availible to hire out the rides per hour (and i know its quite expensive) but has anyone from TT ever approached Alton about maybe an out of season tour or a meal in the conference centre with the "behing the scenes" concept works on display etc.

I mean I'd be willing to pay for it, if it was worth it and theres deffinatly an audience for it.

wouldn't that be very expensive to rent out a ride for an hour?

TPR do get special ERT when they do their tours around their country and also european countries too.

The main TPR leaders Rob and Elissa Alvey have both worked in the themepark industry for least 16 years and 20 years working in the entertainment business developing products for Disney, Universal, Dreamworks, Paramount Pictures, MGM, Amblin Entertainment etc. So maybe they have some sort of infuence in the industry.

Rita, Air, Nemesis, Oblivion and Hex are £1,500 per hour.
Forbidden Valley, X-Sector and UG Land are £5,000 per hour.

which is why i didnt just suggest that. For an hour on nemesis/rita/oblivion i believe you are looking around £1200, smaller range from £800+.

It would be alot to ask TTF members for this which is why I mentioned just a lunch or a tour, or a hotel discount.

I appreciate Rob & Elissa work their asses off for TPR and would never expect TTF staff to try and accomplish that, the only comparison I made was that parks take the time to look after them. Why is alton so negative towards their fans?

Apart from the Soakathon as far as I know, TTF has never had any ERT.

It's been in discussion, but nothing as ever happened...

If people respected the parks rules, I think we would have a good relationship with Alton Towers.

Saying that it's improved drasticly over the last year or so, without any problems.

To be honest, I don't really think TTF has any genuine interest in an hours ERT on Nemesis/Rita/Oblivion etc. At the end of the day, most of us have ridden them all before - many of us many times in our lives. Had Black Hole still been in existance, a ride with the lights on may have created interest. Riding through the old Toyland Tours section of Charlie could be of interest. Exploring Hex with the lights on, the same with Duel. All these kinds of things are of interest rather than simple ride whoring which, lets be honest, you can do on a quiet day anyway.

What would interest the likes of enthusiasts the most would be some access to archives, talks etc.

They did do Behind the Scenes tours at one stage, but these priced many people out.

A documentary on Alton Towers featured the roller coaster club. It said that the park let them take over Nemesis for one day a year. I'm not sure how long this lasted though.

ok, I've a question for some of the older posters... have TTF members acted up in the past while at Alton towers, in some way? It's just i've gotton the impression from this topic and others that some stuffs happened in the past to make Alton a tad on the icy side to us? I mean obviously I can't comment, I'm still a relatively new member, and clutching at straws really :)

would just be good to understand :)

*in a desperate attempt to stay on topic, Nik quickly comes up with something constructive*

if Alton did do more for TTF, it would be amazin', I mean, just looking through the archives would be cool! but I can't really see it happening, Alton doesn't seem like one of those parks which gives benefits to the enthusiasts which post so lovingly on there fansites. might be wrong but it's the impression I get :)

One whole hour on Hex, that would be amazing! I wonder if the 'walk around to the entrance to re-ride it' rule would apply still if say you rented out Nemesis for an hour!
