Good news opening time is 10am at towers but there is staggered time for dark forest, hex and ccl for selected attractions which open at 10:30. Also monorail is start at 8:30 and ert begins at 9am.

Good news! Although the 10:30 opening didn't bother me too much anyway!

EDIT: Just noticed, off peak days have had their closing times changed to 4pm. So basically it is open the same amount of hours during off peak days now as it would have with a 10:30 opening. No change really except I can't get out of bed half an hour later anymore! :lol

But then again you do get opening times 10-6 in summer school holidays

Yep. But even so with a 10:30 opening, you would still get 7 and a half hours which is plenty.

For a smaller park like Thorpe park maybe (although I would hate it) but towers is far larger so you spent a lot of time going from one side of the park to the other

I've normally done every major ride numerous times by about 1:30/2pm. And that's even when I don't use the Skyride.

If you start on one side of the park and work your way round it is quite easy to get all the major rides & attractions done with time to spare.

I'm in no way defending their opening hours as a 6 hour day for what is supposed to be the UK's #1 theme park is very poor but at least opening has been moved back to the original 10am time.

It may be easy to complete all the rides on an off peak day but when you have a busier day where the major coasters have 45+ mins queues, it might not always be the case

But on a busier day the rides are open longer...

But you still can get a very busy park on these occasions with long lines for everything, like me in 2014

You're confusing me. If the park is open longer, it doesn't matter if rides have long queue times because the rides are open for longer, so you will still get everything done.

And if the park was to be busy on an off peak day; well the chances of that happening are slim and probably wouldn't happen, hence why it's an 'off peak' day.

Ever since the incident on The Smiler the parks queue times have been a shadow of their former selves.

The only really busy days we've seen since have been Fireworks and the odd day here and there during Scarefest/summer holidays. On the majority of days last season the major coasters were struggling to hit 30 minute queues (with the exception of Galactica but the decreased throughput due to the VR is responsible for that)

So, given how quiet the park generally is now there is no reason why people shouldn't be able to get a healthy ride count in even on the shortest of days BUT that still doesn't make it acceptable.

What Alton/Merlin should be doing is opening the park for longer and providing their guests with a fantastic experience so they make return visits/tell their friends who will then visit etc. Unfortunately now they're more bothered about the bottom line and it seems guest satisfaction is lower down the pecking order than it should be.

Alton is a park I love greatly and I do still enjoy my visits however it pains me to see it being ran the way it is at the moment. Hopefully 2017 will see guest numbers increase on last year and come 2018 when SW8 opens the park could be returning to normal operationally.

I personally wouldn't say that The Smiler's queues have been shorter, as everytime I visited the park last year (mainly weekends, but a few off-peak school days) The Smiler was always on at least 35/45 minutes (and I have rarely seen it under 15 minutes), and then most weekends 80/90 minutes. Other than that the queues are fairly minimal off-peak, with The Smiler, and usually Rita/Spinball Whizzer on the longer wait times, so with that being said you could do the park easily off-peak, and get several re-rides in. But saying that though, during the summer this year I did have to experience several lengthy waits, therefore I wish they'd increase their opening to like 7pm at a minimum and then I'd prefer it at about 8.30/9pm. Like, think off all the possibilities they could do during summer evenings, concerts, DJ's, etc... I'm being too gobby now, so I'll leave you with that!! :D

While that may be true you have to remember that for the majority of last season The Smiler was only running a 3 train operation (on some days it went down to 2 trains before the new train was signed off)

So while the actual queue time may have still been fairly healthy it will have been down to the reduced throughput rather than the number of guests in the queue.

To put the above into perspective, before the crash The Smiler was still attracting 180 minute queue times on maximum capacity so a 30 minute queue on 3 trains is a drastic reduction in the amount of people going through the ride.

Yeah, I'll agree with that, I'm just saying I think it is still fairly popular, but not nearly as popular in previous years I guess :D

I thought I'd do a quick comparison against some of Europe's other premier theme parks with regards to opening times and gate price during an off peak day in June.

Alton Towers: 10am-4pm - £52.80
Efteling: 10am-6pm - €37.50 (£32)
PortAventura: 10am-8pm - €47 (£40)
Europa Park: 9am-6pm - €47 (£40)
Phantasialand: 9am-6pm - €46.50 (£39.60)
Disneyland Paris: 10am-10pm - £52 (1 park) / £64 (both parks)

I'm struggling to find any argument that Alton Towers could be considered good value.

Will the Dark Forest open later than the rest of the park this year? Finger crossed it isn't, as who can say no to riding Th13teen on a 10 minute queue, or Rita on 20 minutes!! :)

Dark Forest, Cloud Cuckoo Land & Hex will open at 10:30am. Presumably the Rapids will open at 11am as usual.
