Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

As some people have mentioned here, the magnetic strips have been removed from the vertical lift, is this true? I did wonder why, but I'll tell you what, if you watch the official Alton Towers TV ad for The Smiler, it DEFINATELY gives the impression of a vertical launch! I'm not saying there will be...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Not a picture, but in this video at 1:23 you can see them lying on the floor behind the vertical lift and in a this picture from J_Baggie yesterday you can see they are absent from the lift itself. You can just see the fixings for them. Thanks for that, that is VERY curious, I don't suppose anyone ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

If it is going to open on Friday then i would assume there will be some sort of announcement tomorrow, although obviously they will only announce it if they are 100% certain that it will open then. It will really get embarrassing if they miss another opening date. Well you know what they sy 3rd tim...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

I have a question - the two lead actors in The Smiler TV advert, can anybody name them?

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Found this video - if you watch the second ride (from 2m 22s on), you can hear it screeching and scraping all the way round the track! It sounds horrible!  :?

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Here's my theory: Trims turned on full, stopped the train too quickly causing scraping and hence it couldn't make it round the rest of the track. Just a theory :( That scraping noise the car made didn't sound normal? Perhaps a wheel bearing collapsed bringing it to a complete stop? Scraping noise? ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

If you have a look at Roodlesouter's photos on page 496 of this very forum, you can clearly see some very deep scrapes on the track. I'm wondering if perhaps something happened to one of the train's wheels to cause that. I would think it could be easily patched up, but I really would like to know wh...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Crikey that "major incident" sounds rather ominous, I wonder what happened? I'm sure the ride will still open in time, but I hope nobody was hurt or anything like that. Has anyone seen the track or any work since this?

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I haven't got a photo but i do know they have done work as i saw them when i was there yesterday Nothing has changed on it, all they did was look, poke and scratch their heads. The bolts are still bent and the gap still exists. They did not work on it. Thanks, Roodles! I knew as soon as I saw those...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Has anyone seen (or taken photos of) any work that has been done on that first support after the first lift? Last time I saw a photo of it, it was rather crudely held together with spacer bolts, and there were photos very recently of people doing some more work on it. Would love to know what has hap...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Seeing the mesh "roof" going over the queue line fences makes sense from a health & safety point of view, but one thing about the mesh "roof" does not make sense to me. It (in effect) creates an extremely long and narrow corridor, which will be jam-packed full of people. In ...
