Re: Towers Loving Care

Isn't that the cable room for Rita? Yes it is - you can even see hydraulic oil stains on the block paving by the double doors into the launch plant room. That said, I agree with the above comments. I think Alton Towers are going to play the 2016 season very softly-softly. There will initially be no...

Re: Alton Towers - General Discussion

Agree that the chocolate looks nice in it's packaging - but the taste will be the "make it or break it" thing. I can foresee that we will be charged Green & Blacks chocolate prices for something that is sourced from a considerably cheaper supplier. As to the 4:30pm / 5pm closing times ...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I can't say I am surprised by this news in the slightest. The injured guests were not to blame in any way - they were merely on a ride, in the seats they had been given, with the harnesses correctly applied. The employee(s) actions in over-riding the ride control system caused the injuries, as indee...

MAP Query

Just took advantage of the MAP sale and bought a Premium Pass. Chose collection at resort option so the clock does not start ticking until the first day I visit. What the confirmation email says nothing about is how to gain entry to the Park on day 1. I am assuming the pass is issued at the Alton To...

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

Alton Towers could make the theme park a "sterile" area, i.e. search people as they enter it, but should you decide to leave the park for whatever reason, i.e. to return to your car / coach / hotel room, then you would have to be re-screened upon re-entry as you could have picked up prohib...

Alton Towers (& all UK Theme Parks) need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

Agree with the above - especially regarding The Smiler queue line. Lots of people, caged in a small area with no easy means of escape. If someone was to discharge a firearm into the queue area from outside it, the firearm would only cause a limited number of injuries or fatalities (due to limited am...

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

stealthsmiler - I both agree & disagree with what you say. On one hand, no, I don't really want full airport style screening to get into a theme park - if we go down this route, then the terror organisations have won. I also fully agree that most people take way too much crap with them on a day ...

Re: Keeping Alton Towers Resort Safe & Secure

The comments above about Thorpe Park having had metal detection in use randomly for years are true (as we have all seen). However, security at Alton Towers is a joke. Despite all the signs saying queue jumpers will be ejected, they eject no-one (unless you are caught multiple times in the same day)....

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I fully agree that The Mirror are milking the Smiler incident for all they can - and the fact that they have an attractive young woman who suffered very bad injuries & is willing to talk and by photographed by them certainly helps to sell papers. I am sure Miss Balch is not doing this for free e...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Oh come on - there have always been drainage problems in The Smilers' queue line. If there has been anything approaching moderate rain in the last 24hrs, you're going to be walking through a queue line filled with puddles. Look at the topography of The Smiler site - it's built down a sloping hill, w...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I have a number of issues with this article... Firstly, you have to be at least 16 to be a ride host / 18 to be ride operator. Ride operators start on smaller rides & progress onto the bigger ones - often over many seasons. So for a 20yr old to be in charge of The Smiler on 2nd June - whilst not...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

The black hole was sbno for ages, because of some unexpected improvements required that were too cost prohibitive, ie it was mothballed a few years before they originally planned to close it, to save money before the replacement comes along, ie the Smiler. So for instance if ripsaw is up for replac...

Re: Proposed Alton Towers Hotel Extension

One thing you can guarantee is that the theming will be sub-par (just above Travelodge standards) and the prices for the new rooms will be high. This is before you look at the inevitable food & beverage costs. UK visitors need to look at what the likes of the 4* Europa Park hotels charge when co...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

As per my previous comment, above... If correct procedures were being followed with regard to override keys, then the ride operator is not to blame for this. The only key they should have had is a single power on / off key. As soon as something went wrong & the "computer said no", some...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Good to see human error confirmed as the cause. Most people who know how ride control systems work had figured this out on 2nd June. What it is important to note is that the ride operator should only have one key for the ride - this enables them to turn the power on / off. All other keyswitches shou...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I really hope it's not just greedy PR managers for these victims, but I think you may be right. We all saw how quickly lawyers and etc. were found for the victims (lawyers is understandable even though Merlin said very quickly that they would give a full payout) so I think PR managers are easily po...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

I may be reading too much into it as I'm sure a lot of temp staff have left now for college / uni commitments but for the last few days on Twitter retail jobs have been advertised, while this is not uncommon it may be another subtle hint at The Smiler re-opening. The description states it involves ...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Hopefully they haven't found any problem to delay a possible reopening. Was just thinking, they'll need a very good procedure for quick evacuations on the lift hill once it's operating again. Panic is contagious, especially when someones locked into a high speed machine! Not good for visitors or th...

Re: The Smiler Incident 02/06/15

Intriguingly, Varney also went on to say; "the potential reopening of the ride, which is our aspiration, is not necessarily linked to the conclusion of the HSE investigation" . Very intriguing indeed. But I cannot see how Alton Towers can reopen The Smiler with the prohibition notice stil...
