Re: X Sector Refurbishment

^Of course Oblivion has something to do with the Smiler. It's in the same location and the Smiler theme WILL somehow tie in with Oblivion. The tunnel would look cool in black and yellow hazarding stripes. It was also built 15 years before the Smiler existed. Imagine if this new ride The Smiler was,...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

The Smiler and Oblivion are very alike. They are both to do with some kind of organisation trying to make you do something. I'm not entirely sure about Oblivion but I know the theme is like some kind of government facility and The Smiler is owned by TMOJ who maybe have set up there organisation wit...

that would look cool as you shoot through.

Um...no.

Firstly Oblivion has nothing to do with The Smiler and that would just look tacky anyway.

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

The park should not be praised for delaying the opening of the ride. They should be critisized for not starting construction earlier. Gerstlauer plus other contractors would have give them the timeframe for construction so not entirely the parks fault True but they should have started demolishing t...

Re: Food/Drink At The Towers

No. High Street chains such as McDonalds and Burger King have no place in a theme park resort. Alton Towers should be about escapism, and one of the best things that Merlin have done since their takeover from Tussauds is to remove these franchise and replace them with in-house outlets. At least the...

Re: The story of alton towers dvd

I have this DVD, although it's sitting on my shelf gathering dust, but still an essential purchase for any AT enthusiast. It really does need updating or even better we need a whole new documentary on Alton Towers as there hasn't been anything of that kind for quite some time.  I'm hoping that...

Re: Alton Towers 2013 Map

These are the map series since the park was owned by Tussauds: 1) 1991, 1992, 1993 2) 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 3) 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 4) 2002, 2003, 2004 5) 2005, 2006, 2007 6) 2008, 2009, 2010 7) 2011, 2012... They always seem to last for either 3 or 4 years. But I think they will have to create a...

Re: Which Theme Do You Prefer?

Almost certainly Dark Forest, I never went to the park when Ug Land was around but I've seen pictures and videos and stuff and like what TheBoyWithOneEye said it did look cheap. The theming wasn't as good and the Dark Forest has better rides in my opinion. We all loved the Corkscrew but it was gett...

Re: The Future of Katanga Canyon...?

It's a solid family area, but it needs work to bring it back up to scratch. The rapids needs to be drained, dredged and the concrete channel thoroughly pressure washed to remove the years of grime built up from the lakewater. The boats could do with new covers as the present yellow ones are far from...

Re: 2014-2019: Possible Developments?

If the entertainment complex gets built, I believe it's vastly likely that a third hotel could be built. There is not yet a budget option at the Towers, something that the Long Term Development Plan talks about. The lodges won't be cheap; they're described as 'luxury' and are set to be properly the...

That is literally the Alton Towers magic right there.

I agree it would be such a shame to lose it or be altered in any big way, especially as the likely replacement would be a cardboard cutout of Shrek.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

When they built Th13teen I was talking to somebody from Merlin Studios and I mentioned the £15m it cost to build the ride. They "lolled" and said it was actually closer to £8m but because all the other costs like advertising and area retheme go alongside the coaster they can kind of get a...

Re: Future of Ripsaw? What would you want as a replacement?

I always assumed that both Ripsaw and Blade were the tools used to dig up the nemesis creature. Its nice to find something new out. That seems like the best explanation for the two rides in relation to the Forbidden Valley theme. The generally accepted story that they are shrapnel thrown from the N...

What I don't get is why that hotel is still being branded as a Holiday Inn even though Chessington have taken over the management of it?

Re: Do you think Oblivion is a rip off?

If you boil the coaster layout down to its simple forms, then to you it probably is. Wooo a lift hill, a drop and a bendy bit. But that destroys the point of Alton Towers. The park to me is build of theatre and imagination. They build up atmosphere and tension around the ride. If you don't apprecia...

Why?

Because it's 15 years old and, quite frankly, knackered.

Re: Do you think Oblivion is a rip off?

To a certain degree I think the status of the ride has diminuished rapidly - certainly within the last five or so years due to a combination of new ride developments and lack of upkeep. But the original importance of the ride in the UK shall never be forgotten and by god it can still pack a punch. T...
