Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I'm not surprised The Smiler didn't open today. Looking at pictures from today there still appears to be a large amount of finishing work to take place. The queue line isn't complete, fencing still has to be installed and so forth.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

A nice little video here showing some mounted on-ride shots and the legend himself, John Wardley.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The structure on the left of the station building is a set of fire escape stairs that lead from the building.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The left entrance is for Ambulant Disabled (disabled persons that are able to walk), Fastrack holders and single riders. This queue will branch off the left on the plaza and will split into the three separate queues under the first dive loop where the new pipe structure is. Disabled guests with whee...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The magnetic fins for the trims haven't been installed at all yet so the slowness is purely down to the wheels and the use of different compound wheels.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I think it is a case of breaking the bearings and wheels in as well as getting the right combination of hard and soft wheels.

The slowness is not to do with the trims as the magnetic fins that would be used as trims have not yet even been installed.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The reduced speed is most likely due to the train having testing, softer, wheels on plus, the train is only half full. Also, if this is one of the later trains to be put on the circuit, the wheels will not have worn in properly yet. I still however think that the ride will not operate with less than...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The banners have been removed from more of the fencing and there has finally been some planting and landscaping. It looks so much nicer now.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

One thing I've noticed about Truman's photos is that one of the footers for the final turn into the brake run still hasn't been concreted in yet. Very strange for them to have tested without it being concreted in.

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

The vertical lift will almost certainly not have a freefall backwards drop. It would be a technological nightmare and would be an unnecessary gimmick. The fins are just a new noiseless anti-rollback system devised by Gerstlauer. If you watch the fins on the latest off-ride video from the Towers you ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

The lift hills won't be running at full speed most likely yet. I'm sure they'll be running a lot quicker once the whole ride system is running at full speed.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Testing just happened at the Towers with a video of The Smiler. There does seem to be a screeching from the wheels.

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

I believe that now an opening date has been decided marketing will step up a gear. I would imagine teaser adverts will start this weekend, most likely at prime time.

A tweet by @altontowers says that the lighting setup and the fact Cake are on site is not to do with the advert. If not, then what else? Hmmm.

^ That is a fake Alton Towers account. Nothing has been confirmed by Towers themselves.
