Re: Quick Questions 2012

Towers had to have some of the catwalks rebuilt if I remember correctly, as they couldn't support enough weight and one of them may have even collapsed, although I'm not 100% sure about that.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I don't think they'll demolish it carelessly, I'm sure there's somewhere out there that would buy it. It's almost certainly likely to be worth more as a whole rather than the scrap value of the metal.

Re: Facebook - The Constructed Self

Quite an interesting topic you're studying there actually. I use Facebook most days although I post on it very little nowardays, I used to post all the time although from looking at the type of things my friends post on it I've grown to see it less as a communication tool and more as something for p...

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

two brief points - 1) The Swarm was originally called "LC12" - I believe on fences and even down to the early website. Therefore it's entirely likely that AT will continue with the name SW7, until shortly before opening, when the "real" marketing kicks in. 2) SW7 - The worlds fi...

Re: Park Music and Videos

I agree that the skyride announcements are far too much upselling, just the background music would be better (at least without the style changes to match what's being advertised). I like the new gondolas, yes they're a lot brighter than the old ones but they're certainly a lot more modern looking, w...

Re: Queue Displays

I would rather queue boards showed all times rather than just the ones nearby, as I usually use the boards to judge where would be the best place to go next, rather than go somewhere to discover the queue is unusually massive.

How does the DNA mean double helix by the way? I get the dueling part, but not this. :?

The shape of DNA, the shape you can see on the 2013 mini-site, is called a double helix, that's the connection.

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

Well this is exciting, although at the moment I'm struggling to think of a suitable story link between the double helix design and the giant metal spider thing we know will be the centrepeice.

I've heard lots of people saying that these rides work on a chain, does anyone have a picture of this or anything that demonstrates it?

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

My thoughts on Saw from when I went a few weeks back aren't that is is rough, I remember it being fairly smooth actually, but after the outdoor MCBR some of the elements really throw you from one side to the other pretty quickly. Smoothly, but it's a bit aggressive the movements.

Re: Alton's Next Major Thrill

Looking at it entirely hypothetically, I wonder if making a sky swat half underground so that it didn't need to lift into position would ease some of the problems the system has.

Yep, sounds fair enough to me. Saying that they've had trouble at this time of year in the past is reasonable enough without singling out a group of people.

From what I remember from walking down there last Scarefest, most of the lights didn't work anyway and it was a nightmare walking down in the dark!

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

Probably, I couldn't say for sure although I would have thought, depending on the cups, that the difference between the two would be very marginal. The same applies in this context, I imagine the gondola is pretty massive even when empty so I can't really see how the amount of fat people on the towe...

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

That's not how F=ma works, in this context F would be weight of the gondola in Newtons. I don't know the calculations behind air resistance but that does seem more reasonable that mass would affect how much air resistance is encountered. What we would consider a 'forceful' drop would be one that is ...

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

Compared to Th13teen, it certainly packs less of a punch in my opinion. That was one of my first thoughts when I went on Sub-Terra as well. Th13teen seems to build the tension better as well, with the false drop and the darkness. I look forward to re-riding this though now they've made alterations ...

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

Weight does not affect freefall, although the big peice of floor attached to the system will undoubtedly act like a big parachute and take some of the punch away from the drop.

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

I would have thought that for anyone going on with absolutely no prior knowledge of the ride, the drop would be a complete surprise. If anything, the only effect that wouldn't be a surprise would be the water as when I went on there was so much on the lapbar and all over the floor it was fairly obvi...

Re: Nemesis: Sub-Terra Discussion (May Contain Spoilers)

It's a chain that pulls it back up, right? If it is I imagine there'd be some sort of anti-roll back (or in this case, drop-back) device. If it's a cable system then a jolt or something could be programmed in. With a chain I'm not so sure. I can't imagine any system to lift a drop tower that would ...
