Re: X Sector Refurbishment

That is not rust. I assume that is where they have stripped the old coating of paint.

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

I'm actually quite scared of that brake run turnaround now... It looks like pure evil.

Re: Chessington 2013 Closed Season Updates

That is an example of how NOT to conduct a retheme. Would you rather they went back to their old method of 'retheming'? Which involves removing everything and not putting things back, or replacing it with ducks. The original café was outdoors, meaning it was cold, money was wasted on ineffective he...

Re: Chessington 2013 Closed Season Updates

You can also see they are building a new turret of sorts to the left of the entrance. Intriguing! This creativity never stops!

I don't know why but this is far more exciting than The Smiler! :P Maybe because Chessington rarely ever gets the chance to do anything new these days...

Re: Chessington 2013 Closed Season Updates

Thank you so much for those photographs! https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R4-mrfRvKNk/UQ0rg0jcoyI/AAAAAAAAANg/qzuvAC_aeBc/s720/IMAG0144.jpg This image is particularly great for me because it could answer something I have been wondering for quite a while. In 1990 the Black Forest Chateau had a faca...

Re: The animatronics problem

Anamatronics are by their very nature, crap. My point is, Disney DO take care of their rides. Duel was last refurbed '03 and for the most part doesn't work. That's not really fair on the maintenance team. Duel has repeatedly been maintained each closed season since 2008, with newly fixed effects an...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

Does the 'curtain being pulled back' and revealed that X Sector was owned by the Ministry of Joy warrant this much discussion about Air and Rita? The topic is about X Sector's refurbishment in preparation of the Smiler. We are therefore discussing similar incidents that have happened in the past, s...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

Rita's theme might be underwhelming to you, but it is still themeing We have very different understandings of the term "theming". Think of it like this: If you saw a film about outer space, but the only thing on screen to suggest space was a sign saying "Space station" or someth...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

Nemesia and Air, do have the 'weakest link' between the themes, although they are still quite similar. Air also has no real theme. Alton Towers thought the 'concept of flying' was enough of an attraction to get people on the ride. At one point they were going to have some sort of aeroplane theme, p...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

For the sake of friendly discussion I would like to continue... A ride like Rita at Alton Towers, whilst being a brilliant coaster is not really a themed ride - theming was an afterthought - and I can’t think we would add a ride without a story now.  Nemesis at Alton Towers [...] stil...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

When I was in the Rita queue some girls were saying "I don't get this ride, what's the theme suppose to be about?" and of course us enthusiasts know how Rita fits in with Thirteen but most people don't The idea that you need to be an "enthusiast" to understand what a ride is abo...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

^Of course Oblivion has something to do with the Smiler. It's in the same location and the Smiler theme WILL somehow tie in with Oblivion. The tunnel would look cool in black and yellow hazarding stripes. It was also built 15 years before the Smiler existed. Imagine if this new ride The Smiler was,...

Re: X Sector Refurbishment

Would also be quite funny if they put a dummy down there like on saw: the ride, but only switched the lights on on random occasions to freak guests out.... I think they need to fill the tunnel with smoke and strobe lights, that would create a very disorientating ride. I think when they do re-paint ...

Re: Wicked Witches Haunt/Phantom Phantasia review/why it didn't work for me

I just wanted to make a point of why as a kid I didn't think it was as good as Fifth Dimension and Terror Tomb just for the sake of my own ideas and anyone else who cares read my articles. That's fine, but since this is a discussion forum, you won't mind me talking more generally about the ride its...

Re: Wicked Witches Haunt/Phantom Phantasia review/why it didn't work for me

Bear in mind this was built for Thorpe Park in 1983, way before the UK theme park industry really got going. Comparing it to "show rides" such as the Fifth Dimension is unfair since they had different purposes and were built in different contexts. Thorpe Park was more of an educational day...

Re: who made duel?

Oops, I didn't think I was arguing but I have caused a fuss, sorry. Meames, the only reason I thought your comment was a bit insensitive was because the topic of our conversation, Mr Sparks, was dying at the time and therefore that photo from your website has nothing to do with him. Sorry if I gave...

Re: who made duel?

These chaps ... were in the Haunted House since day one weren't they? Thats the same head just in a different colour and body. No, those zombies were added in 2003. The Haunted House had nothing to do with zombies or lasers or any gimmickry of that nature, that was all added later. The prop was bou...

Re: who made duel?

Well you can rest assured that Wardley/Sparks would never had conceived something as cheap as that zombie! I mean, I could probably find a better prop in Tesco at Halloween. [/slight exaggeration] The zombies and other naff effects were all added in the Duel refurb, which was handled entirely by Tus...

Re: who maydde the duel?

Shrieksville opened almost two decades after Sparks Group closed. The reason there is similarity it because those zombies are just cheap prefabricated props that you can buy online; they all look the same. Whereas the original Haunted House effects were designed by John Wardley/Sparks Group and the ...

Re: who made duel?

Sparks Group and Rex Studios and their contractors created all the original effects, audio and set design, if that is what you are interested in. Neither companies exist today and Keith Sparks passed away last year. He was a frequent collaborator with John Wardley, who developed the concept and dire...
