Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

From to Towers2Go's Facebook page...

The Smiler is now testing currently. It's believed the trains have had modifications (to stop guests being able to ride feet above the barrier) and the trim brakes have been adjusted.

If this is true, it's very positive news.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Just checked the Alton Tower's site, and it simply says 'Due to technical issues The Smiler is currently closed'. I'm not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign. The FAQ has changed as well. Any mention of "The Smiler is closed on XX" has been changed to "The Smiler is currently clo...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

After seeing the great photo updates from the park both here and on TowersStreet, I think Roodles is absolutely spot on with this assessment of the situation. H&S wouldn't sign off on the ride due to the queue line fencing - notice in the photos today not only are we seeing the mesh being placed...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I am not sure about the validity of this but I asked a construction worker today when the Smiler will open and he said two weeks. I doubt it'll be that long. AT really wouldn't be able to keep up the day-by-day updates for that long without damaging customer relations beyond all repair. Surely they...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Maybe nothing at all went 'wrong', maybe they just weren't finished in general? And this is why fences are being put on, cranes are there to put the last train on (because they weren't all there on time) and why cherry pickers are being took away, why x-sector was closed so they could have time to ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Oh dear, so much doom and gloom in this thread. Here's a positive theory for you: This is the first time AT have said "right it won't be open these days" rather than just updating the site for only the following day. This gives them two whole days (2 & a 1/2, counting today...is any wo...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Well now we know what the crane's for - putting a train on the track: *SNIP* From TowersStreet Facebook. This has to be a good sign, right? RIGHT?! my question is, are they new trains?. I'm hoping so. They only put 4 out of the 5 trains on in the end before, didn't they? Actually, I'm pretty sure i...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

WOAH the fencing around the queue line entrance is gone! Could this mean tomorrow opening? *SNIP* Credit to Towers street Already confirmed by AT it's not opening tomorrow. Soft opening though... Unlikely, but possible. It's hard to say without knowing what the real problem is. See this is what I t...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I have information from a very reliable source that the reason for the ride failing H&S is due to the vertical lift, let me clarify what he said... Basically whilst reviewing the coaster, when the train was reaching a certain point on the lift, it was 'slip' off the momentum of being lifted up ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

I'm surprised. I really thought with the closed X Sector (and a presumed knuckling down of construction) we'd see an actual opening date given today. I definitely thought we'd see it open for the Bank Holiday weekend. I know there's still Sunday and Monday, but still.

Disappointed.

Soft opening of the smiler or soft of the xsector ?

'Soft opening' means opening without announcement so they can quietly test a ride with the public without drawing in a huge crowd. So it means The Smiler.

I'll be very surprised if there'll be soft openings today though.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Nothing is moving in x-sector. No rides are testing, no music is playing. There are no generators running or workman anywhere. Nothing. *SNIP* I can see one car on the storage rail and one on the brakes. The access I got didn't give me a fuller view. How completely bizarre. Why close it off if no w...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Just looking through AT's Twitter feed. Someone asked 5 minutes ago if The Smiler will be open tomorrow. They responded by "any updates will be posted on the site". I know that's the canned answer, BUT it's a good sign that they're not saying "no". Bare in mind, we knew it would ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

So, given that they seem to have closed off X Sector in order to make a final push in getting this thing finished, here's what I think we'll see happening today: AT will update the site again, but this time with an actual date - either Sunday or Monday (possibly Saturday, though that may be pushing ...
