Monorail at Expo 86

You may or may not know that Alton Towers' monorail began life at Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada. Anyway, here's a picture of the Monorail in her former life, for anyone interested.  Always weird to see a familiar thing in an unfamiliar place. http://cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000BNYlBJSC.f...

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

Afraid SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge already beat SW7 to that title technically :P http://cache.rcdb.com/c99a0t3s0028sm38cbu0km.jpg That is probably the most pathetic drop I have ever seen for a beyond vertical drop coaster. I starts to level out almost immediately after the beyond verti...

It'd better be dark if that's how they're staying! :| In fairness (and I'm not saying this sarcastically) - what you've describe...

Re: Nemesis Genesis - John Wardley and Candy Holland in the Guardian

I never knew Candy was involved with Alton in the Nineties, maybe she worked her way up. I think she's merely speaking on behalf of the creative team - even if she wasn't there at the time.  It begins with ... 'our creative team developed...'  and the 'we' she uses from that point forward...

Re: Park Opening Hours 2012

I've not posted in this topic yet so my thoughts on early closing time: 1.  If you're travelling from down South, it's REALLY HARD to get there for opening time (let alone ERT) so it becomes a very short day if you get kicked out at 4 2.  I'm sure Merlin have done the numbers, but this rea...

Apologies if this has been posted anywhere else (I've not seen it), but a restoration of the White Bridge has been completed over the Closed Season: http://www.altontowersheritage.com/deve ... 142.  Looks like a good job well done!

Amazing, Nemesis 94!

Brilliant recreation and it gives us a great idea how awesome X-Sector will look next year!

Re: 2012: Nemesis Sub-Terra... Part 2

It's true that everything is looking really positive for Sub-Terra.  And I see absolutely no reason to resist getting caught up in excitement about it. The thing with Sub-Terra as opposed to Th13teen is that for the AT enthusiast, there's nothing to lose with Sub Terra. Th13teen was the park's ...

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

This might seem random but when you mentioned Oblivions audio from the top being removed due to it being too loud and we're discussing audio in the seats of SW7 why don't AT spend some money on fitting speakers in the speakers and there could be a huge build up to the drop with the sound of a heart...

To be honest, I don't like that one at all:  most of the foreground is taken up with overhead views of big, boring buildings, while a lot of the actual attractions are squashed all the way up at the back.

Re: ERT 2012

I guess it makes sense for Alton Towers to spread people all over the park during ERT: it means when the rest of the rides open, there aren't bottlenecks at any point in the park.  You'll have people all over the place, which helps spread the queues much better.

Re: New Chicken outlet

Not sure what to make of it. The outlet is nice, but the food is below average and it is fairly expensive. Let's give them a chance with the food at least - it was day 1 of opening, with an all new staff.  These things always take a little while to bed in.  Main thing at this stage is tha...

Re: Outstanding Customer Service

This is great to read. It also adds further weight to the view that they haven't taken the decision to close Submission and Enterprise for 2012 lightly:  The Alton Towers of 2012 really want to keep rides open as much as possible.  Good to see. So far, things are looking very promising for...

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

I do think it's interesting that the big spider thing is described as 'an important component of the attraction' - strongly suggest that it's not merely there to fill some space and add some theming, but that it really needs to be there for the ride to have its full effect.  Yes, that's partly ...

Re: The Smiler - Speculation

I like it!  My thoughts: 1.  Alton Towers have never, ever built a new rollercoaster that fits in with the existing theme of the area it's going in (except, MAYBE Spinball Whizzer, but that was hardly a triumph).  2.  There's a bunch of people here giving AT a hard time for reusi...

Yep, as far as I can recall, there was no regular show in the Theatre at that time.. though of course there was plenty of entertainment elsewhere.

Re: 2011 / 2012 Closed Season - Resort Updates and Improvements

- The staircase in Splash seems to be having a new carpet fitted which looks AWESOME, especially for an area of the hotel used far less than most of the main areas of footfall. Got issues with this carpet malarky as well.  I mean come on, its been fine all these years and the hotel floors are ...
