Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

What, wait. So there is no 'second' world first element?

...guess it was just a really badly written press release, talking about this being Alton Towers second, real, World First coaster after all.

Re: The inversions rant I've been saving up for ages.

See I disagree. Rita is purely about speed and it doesn't need inversions. Plus, considering the ride lasts what, 30 seconds tops? 6-7 seconds of air time ain't that bad! Rita's only downfall is it's location, but that impacts the area it's in more than it does the actual ride. There is the potentia...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

Take it you missed the whole, uber massive 'free tickets' campaign a few months ago? Featuring none other than The Smiler?  I'm not saying a television advert isn't important, or needed. It will be, and it will serve a purpose. But it's not needed right now when there is already a good l...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

Alton Towers haven't cut advertising. They're simply trying new things. In fact, I think we're seeing more advertising for The Smiler than we have done for any other UK coaster. It's just being distributed and targeted very differently. Right now, only the fanboys don't have much to talk about but t...

Re: Alton Towers PowerCut

When a power cut occurs, the emergency stop procedure is activated on most, if not all rides automatically. It's standard procedure for all rides to run several (relatively quick) tests before resuming normal operation after an estop. This is to rule out any problems with the ride which may have led...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

Yeah I should have probably phrased my post differently, I wasn't clear - marketing is good, *advertising is poor They're all two and the same. The marketing, and the resulting advertising has been pretty damn good, and on point. Especially compared to the likes of Thirteen's advertising which may ...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

You have to remember the marketing plan stalled when the coaster got delayed. They will have to relook and refinance a few things. For example, during Feb/March television advertising is considerably cheaper than Apr/May/June because you have a lull after Christmas/Sales and you don't have big ticke...

Re: The Smiler - Marketing [May Contain Spoilers]

I think it may actually be referring to the ride being Alton Tower's second 'worlds first...' coaster, not that there is a second Worlds first element to The Smiler. Would make more sense as only Oblivion was a true World's first coaster. So we all forget air and TH13TEEN exsist  :? And Oblivi...

The leg is much further back than it looks in that image. I think there are steps immediately after the entrance as well?

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

It looks as though they're still working on it. So I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Brilliant white would be good, but it would be brilliant grey before the end of the month so I'd prefer/expect something a little more durable.

Re: Thoughts & Views of the Recent Posting Guidelines

Whilst I completely agree moderation is required, and the odd grammatical edit required. I also feel it is incredibly rude and disrespectful for someones post to be completely edited/removed without them receiving any notification.

Sort it out.

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

If they've got a few of those arrows left over, they could leave the white wrapping on and stick them in the Air tunnel! How awesome would 2013 be then!  :P

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

Haha, yeah, the fence is in a bit of a strange place.

The fencing lower down in the pit sits quite low to the concrete too, suggesting that wont' be brick paved to match the rest of the park :(

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

To be fair that is a broad sense of the word, actual testing involves the running of a coaster around the track, what you are saying is like when a car is being built they test buttons and doors while its being built, the actual testing is the driving of the car.. So what you're saying is, testing ...

Re: The Smiler - Construction Discussion

With testing already started, have they fixed the gaping hole between the track and one of the supports? Just above where they we're welding the additional bits in last week? We still have no confirmation that testing has started. Testing doesn't just encompass running a train around the track. The...
