Re: Ride op costumes

When hex first opened the staff wore high vis jackets with some tree logo on the back (never found out what that was) and some even had hard hats. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, all staff used to wear white lab coats. Basically it's not something new. It will probably wear off again. But, it's s...

Re: Future Rides without John Wardley...

The last time John retired (yes he's done it twice now) we got rides and attractions like Duel, Spinball, Rita, Charlie, Dung Heap, Haunted Hollow - all disappointing by epic proportions. Candy and her theming team may be great at what they do, but without the ride underpinning it their efforts are ...

Re: The Haunted House

The ride photo point was indeed originally in the skeleton/ghost corridor, where Electric Bill stands and plunges the house into darkness, though I cannot remember what the "ghotcha" moment was to get your reaction. These photographs must have been taken in the first season of the Haunted ...

Re: Alton Towers: The Lost Back Stories

The backstory (or more like seed of a backstory) for Duel is fairly decent. It's a shame they didn't do a full conversion when putting guns into the Haunted House. If the whole attraction was centered around the idea of a missing mad scientist attempting to reanimate the dead, and you're on a hunt t...

Re: When was the last area built?

If you're talking about scratch build then probably Gloomy Wood in 1992, which came shortly after Katanga Canyon with the rapids retheme. You could class the area Air sits in as newish, even though it's an extension to Forbidden Valley it has a different theme. So that was 2002. Also outside the the...

Re: I've killed the magic...

I really don't see what dark days mean. From 1989 to 1996 Alton Towers was advertised as the United Kingdoms answer to Disney even had it on Matchbox Bus models sold on park. I'd say that was the case up to about 2002. Then the dark days kick in from 2003-2007.  That seems to be what's general...

Re: I've killed the magic...

The only way to get the magic back is to get rid of Merlin. I went to the park last week, it was the first time this year. I thought I might have missed the place, but no, it was worse than I expected. Of the whole day, the only member of staff that actually acknowledged our existence was the bar ma...

Re: Duel 2013

Well the Haunted House cost around £5m back in 1992 so in today's money that would be about £8m to £9m, which is more like a "medium" investment year for Merlin - baring in mind major projects are costing them around £18m at the moment. But, they already have the building and the transit s...

Re: Duel 2013

I was talking to a member of staff there last week he said that duel will be getting replaced in 2 years don't know if its true but wonder what will replace it if it is Just trying to avoid the game of chinese whispers here. Did the guy say: "This ride is going to be replaced in 2015" Or ...

Re: Behind The Scenes Tours

No longer run due to Healthy & Safety.

In other words a) they can't be bothered because there's no profit in it and b) they don't want people taking pictures in backstage areas showing issues and 'bodge-jobs' which could get them into trouble.

Re: bounce back tickets

Further greed from Towers/Merlin. The system that was in place for god knows how many years was fine and didn't need changing.  Although I am surprised that the bounce back tickets have been £5. They were always £10 (unless you go way back to the 90's which they were £5 lol). I can only suggest...

Re: Smells like chocolate (ride based scents) help needed!

Alton have a lot of those Vortex machines but apart from the chocolate smell in Charlie, none of the others seem to work these days. Both Duel and Hex have multiple scents throughout the rides, they're also heavily used in the Scarefest attractions. The Haunted One website - http://www.hauntedone.co...

Re: Which ride at alton towers was the first one to get a shop?

Wow! It looks great but I honestly can't remember it.

Having said that. That photo can't be of the original shop because it's using the new Nemesis logo. Didn't that logo only come into existence when Inferno was built at Thorpe, so around 2003? It's definitely not pre 2000.

Re: Which ride at alton towers was the first one to get a shop?

Actually as far as I am aware the first rides in the park to get their own shop were the Runaway Mine Train, Congo River Rapids and Haunted House all in the same year. Two shops were build for these rides back in 1992, one in each area. The first major rollercoaster however with it's own retail out...

Hmm, I don't think those pics really do it justice.

I shall have a trawl through the TT archives later and see if I can find some more.

The poll has been messed with and seems to make little sense.

I'm going to lock this topic, and perhaps we'll start a new one in a few weeks when more people have rode The Smiler.

Re: The upgraded Rhydrator

I heard it was cramped ,dark and many people just used it as a short cut the oblivion pit. However true this may be, I believe it was changed so they could sell more than just coke, as in their eyes, a vending machine does the same thing but far cheaper. 100% the actual reason. Remember this change...

Re: Which Do You Prefer : Air Or Th13teen?

I love both coasters, but Air I don't find thrilling and never have. I think that's because it's designed to be graceful and calm. It does it's job well and you get a lovely ride on it. Th13teen, already been enough said about it but what I do find thrilling is the poop-your-pants drop and backwards...
