Duel: General Discussion

Tue May 06, 2008 5:21 pm

This season Duel started off in a reasonable state with alot of effects back in working order and the added mist in the shop.

Yesterday I could only describe Duel as being in an absolute state, The whole ride generally looks worst for wear, lets the park down to be honest which is looking fantastic this year and on the up for keeping everything in working order.

A list of things I noticed,

- Music was not playing in parts of the ride leaving it silent, Not surprising with the ancient sound system the ride still uses.
- Effects completely out of time
- The first half of the ride from the Dining room to the tunnel, all effects off including the second giant Demon which has fallin down and has been like that since march.
- Everything generally looks aged and falling apart, and bright strobe lights dont help in hiding the awfulness.

What was the best Dark ride in the UK back in it's time now a ride in despair?

It's such a shame, and I really think Duel needs the Wardley touch bakc to it, and to a similar state it was back when it openend.

The strobes really spoil the effects, and so do all the Led's.

This amount of detail goes to waste.

Has the second Demon fallen down as in, it's completely left the platform and is lying on the floor, or is it just hanging off it a bit. Last time I rode Duel (March 21st), the ride looked good, but those Demons still weren't working properly, you could see them lit up behind the pillar. In fact, the last time I saw them move was 2006!

http://www.hauntedone.co.uk/  only have to look back at wat was and compare   ,

With a budget of money spent on it, Which would be on A massive clean up and repainting of inside the ride and fixing up old effects, Brand new lighting effects installed and out with them strobes need to go back to using black lighting, new Sound system, Targets placed in appropiate locations and not here and there for the hell of it. Along with the replacement and clean up of some of the older effects along with brand new effects plus moving some about would be good as seriously the face that opens after the tunnel was not a good place for it especially that it ruins the illusion of the tunnel and bats.

And big money is not needed here, I think the lighting is the issue that needs addressing the most to hide whats there if money will not be put aside for a clean up.

I really think with the right imagination could make it a fantastic ride again.

Duel has the basis of a cracking dark ride and, when it is all working top notch - it is still pretty credible.

However at the moment, as Ant says - the ride is in dire need of TLC. This is a shame as in February, Duel was much better. Even the Cauldron in the photo collection point is barely smoking now.

The first 1/3 of the ride is in a complete state at the moment... I am sure the park are aware of this, but they really could do with sorting it, especially given the busiest time of year is coming and they want to surely have all the rides looking their best.

:(

Really is such a shame. Its one of the potentially best rides/themed at Alton and they cant look after it.

I was amazed when I first saw photos like those above, showing the incredible about of detail. I dont think we'll ever see theming that good again.

This is a sad disappointment after all the initial excitement and hype over the Merlin acquisition :(

It would be great if they removed all the LED and guns rubbish but not only took it back to how it was when it first opened but actually add new effects, theming and upgrade the old one. It wouldn't cost much money at all compared to opening a brand new attraction and it would mean Alton would get to claim it's third "New ride opening this year!!" from the same attraction! :P

I thought it was pretty good in febuary... but this is sad! i remember it as the Haunted House... and it was amazing. I'm sure it isnt that much effort to do a thorpe and close it for a bit and do a bit of renovation on it!

Oh this saddens me :( I absolutely love Duel, but what interferes with my love is the fact i see it has so much potential. It has seemed quite unloved by the park until this season, having effects that don't work, dodgy sounds etc. Then in February it was fantastic, all effects working, old sound effects returning, everything in time, and ofcourse the really cool cauldron in the shop. However it seems this has all been undone.

This ride has so much potential, I hate to see it go to waste :(

Keeping rides not just running, but up to scratch theming wise is something that Alton Towers management haven't quite mastered yet.

I hope it's something they get their head round soon. If you go on a ride (like Duel) and something isn't working, or is broken, that's the image you leave the ride (and the park) with. This is after all 'the magic', and if AT want to keep the park alive with magic they must pay attention to these (not so small) details.

Come on AT, don't let the park slip in this way!

Omg! I actually didn't realise the theming was of that standard.

Duel really does need attention to get a great ride nearing it's original standard. They really do need to tone done the L.E.D's, as it takes all focus away from the actual ride, and the abundance merely hurts riders hands from shooting for nearing 10 mins. L.E.D's should be more integrated to theming pieces... I think the Garden scene is the best part of the ride currently because of it's lack of overwhelming L.E.D's.

And secondly, the ride needs structured lighting - scenes of great theming quality such as those which you posted should not be left in absolute darkness. Such scenes should stand as 'interludes' to allow riders to rest there hands. Perhaps some storytelling audio could be added which goes with the storyline.

Loads of potential there.

I havent actually ridden duel this season but I would just like to say that the smoke machine in the shop is switched off because whilst is fine for guest walking through and being in it for a few minutes, when your working in spooks and in there all day, its not very nice and you do get a sore throat by the end of the day.

The cauldron, however, still works fine and is on every day.

I agree that Duel is a bit crap at the moment. It needs serious work, and an awful lot of attention to detail. from what I've seen of the HH themeing, it has seriously lost a lot of it's appeal. It has so much potential (It's through the roof actually) but I don't actually think the Management want to know about Duel, its just a little attraction with small attendance figures and low appeal to them.

bollocks. It's a potential crowd bringer and if they don't do something about it soon, I will complain mtyself to them (Not that it'll get much done)

I really do get angry about Duel sometimes. It's got fab music, and potential to be amazin'. too bad they see it as an investment too far...

Please note all above is just opinions, and not fact. I do not know what AT thinks of duel, and can not state wheteher or not they see it as an investment too far as fact. merely an observation, thats all ;)
