Ride Staff: Uniforms or Costumes?

Fri Feb 05, 2010 2:41 pm

I've just been watching the Magic Factory video and I got thinking about that security dude in the orange jump suit who was acting while Oblivion was under construction. I remember back in the day, some staff in the Haunted House used to wear black cloaks and also when CATCF was built, all staff wore white lab coats.

This is something I would really like to see but on ALL major rides, it reinforces the theme! Oblivion staff with their orange jumpsuits, Hex could have hard hats and hi-vis jackets, Rapids staff dressed in explorer wear and so on. It seems like only a few rides have ever had staff costumes and when they did it only ever ran for a season or two.

Would you like see this back again or do you think it would make no differencem, or perhaps you're in favour the generic staff uniform?

I like the costume idea. It works well at Disney, so why not at Alton?

Although there's bound to be some mellon who complains that they can't identify staff because they only have the brain power to remember one outfit.

Yeah, typical thick british people lol!

Obviously though they cant go too far, the Alton Towers logo would just have to be plastered absolutely all over the costumes.

I'd love to see costumed staff on rides. Maybe to avoid the "staff identification" problem all the costumes could prominently feature the AT logo? What would we have though... obviously explorers for KC and pirates for MB.

I'd actually love to see all the Oblivion staff on extremely sharp looking suits and sunglasses. Like Agent Smith I guess...

I'd love ride or area specific uniforms or costumes, rather than just the generic ones they currently have. Lets hope that the staff operating Thirteen are in costume, though I somehow imagine it will be plain old generic.

Some of the excuses banded about in the past for reasons not to have ride staff in costume are, as already been mentioned, staff identification, along with costs of producing the costumes/different uniforms (it is obviously much cheaper to order on mass a generic uniform as opposed to small orders of custom made attire), and of course the old favourite "Elf n Safety".

I agree ride themed uniforms would be excellent and I agree with Sams Idea.

Even the Pleasure Beach have it  Granted it's only on one ride - The Gold Mine, they wear checked shirts, boots and ruff neck jeans. I think it adds character to a ride personally. :)

Themed ones any day, it works well at Disney and Universal, so god knows why it wouldn't work at Alton either! I think the excuse of "people won't recognize the staff" is a very weak one, in my opinion, as surely any thelmed uniforms would stand out totally from anything normal people are wearing, plus all the ones at Disney have standard name badges and you can identify the staff from the fact they are usually working! Its certainly not hard to spot the demonic Bell Hop staff on Tower of Terror for instance, and I think many people would agree that it wouldn't be the same without them eiter. In that instance, they don't just look the part, they act it too 8)

I'd love to see it though! It worked (sort of) for Alton in the 90's, with X Sector, Gloomy Wood, Ug Land and at one point Forbidden Valley having separate uniforms to represent the area. in faact, I think Ug Land and X Sector still used them (albeit just branded polo shirts/jackets) until up about 2004 beofre abolishing them when Rita came in, which is no big suprise! get it sorted Alton, then you can also make the admissions staff more formal too :D

I have heard these may be making a re-appearance this year...

As part of the 30th Celebration. It's defiantly being looked into anyway.

It does indeed work at many parks - Disney Resorts, Universal, Europa-Park, Phantasialand...

Fantastic topic! I think it would be a great idea if the Alton Towers ride staff where to be costumed ride specifically; opposed to the rather boring and ‘generic’ dress they currently wear. Like people have mentioned above, it really does make a difference to the all round ride experience if the ride ops and staff in the surrounding area are dressed to the theme of the ride. It’s fantastic and remarkably adds to the ride experience. They really pay attention to detail in the parks that are that one small step ahead of Alton such as Europa Park and Disneyland when it comes down to attention to detail.

Here are my ideas for costumes to fit some of the rides… :)

Nemesis, I would have thought that a sort of army uniform would suit the ride, part of the team trying to keep the monster under control… perhaps they could train the staff to act the part as well. Just an idea, would definitely add more to the build up and fear before you ride.
Congo River Rapids, the obvious thing would be to attire them with explorer costumes. Obviously it would just theme the staff to the ride… I always think that the generic clothes the members of staff usually wear bring you back to reality and take away the effect; I think the attention to detail would just make the theming that little bit better.

I don’t think that the themed costumes should just be used for the ride staff; I think it would be great if they actually did this all over the park. In restaurants, shops, info desks etc… It would be another good step in the right direction for Alton if they implemented themed staff attire around the park! :D

I hope that for 13 they will be dressed as wraiths!

Also I wonder what staff for Air could be? :-k

Anything that adds to the theme and helps to escape reality gets a big thumbs up from me.
The closest we have at the moment is Hex where the staff wear high-vis jackets as though they are maintenance workers. Although i'm not sure if this is just for health and safety or staff recognition in the dark, but either way it works!

Also, I think the staff for Thirteen dressed as wraiths would take away from the theme,
The idea of being fastened in by a wraith doesn't really make much sense to me.

Unfortunately, as it's been mentioned already, health and safety laws in the UK are so tight it's untrue. A themed uniform would have to be checked, checked again, referred to a council, lost, found again, cross-checked and eventually decided on.

It may happen at some point in the future, but if that did happen, then the ride you got the uniform for would be the ONLY ride you worked on. Unless you were a area manager etc etc. Purely because of cost and things.

In my mind I can see it as this (obviously all these are disregarding everything I've just said lol):

Oblivion: - Black suits, sunglasses and earpieces

Nemesis: - Monk-like cloaks (a la the video for the story and the comic...would give an excuse to re-sell the comic)

Air: - Air steward/stewardess uniforms...sort of a pale blue (something retro)

Thirteen: - Has to be the Wraith costumes

Katanga Canyon: - Explorer outfit

Mutiny Bay: - Pirate outfit (not just eye patch and a hook...proper stuff like disney)

Rita: - (before the re-theme) leather racing gear
BARROWMAN! *shakes fist*

CATCF staff still wear the white overcoats don't they?

I think ride specific uniforms are very important and should really be looked into. I guess it's not practical in most cases due to the rota of the ride staff, Oblivion staff also working on Spinball Whizzer for example, themes clash all over the place.
There are other factors too. If I recall don't Staff have to buy their own uniform? It may become unaffordable if custom pieces were being made.

For a heavily themed ride not having the staff in costumes to go with the theme detracts from the experience - you build up all the atmosphere in the queue, then loose some of that when a bloke in an AT fleece jacket or polo shirt is stood around the station.

For me Tower of Terror at Disney Florida set the standard - great themed building, good pre-ride, and on my first ride the bell-hop who checked our seat belts stuck his head through the lift doors as they were closing and screamed "You're all going to die!".

If AT want to hit the same standard they need staff who want to be doing it and put on that little bit of performance, not just there as a safety check.

I've always found the ride that needs costumed actors the most is The Haunting at DMP.
That ride could be ace if you were escorted by a 'ghostbuster', rather than a spotty teenage twonk.

You have to take the weather into accont though. Alton is in the north of England, and it can be very wet and cold, which could damage the uniforms and make the staff uncomtable. They don't have that problem at any of the Disneylands because they're warm and drier.

^I've never seen the staff at Disney Paris complaining about the cold, rain, snow when they are dressed in themed clothing... Disney Paris is pretty much open all year so if Disney Paris can provide costumes that are both suitable for the weather and a rides theme why can't Alton? :) Plus, you don't go to the north of France for a warm holiday, same with England. :P

I would like to see some sort of themed uniforms and maybe the ride opp's even act and keep the rides story line and theme going before you start the ride. Like on Oblivion they are all scientist and on Nemesis they are all soldiers and on the flume they are all ducks :P

Thanks
Sam
