Have you considered the possibility that the whole thing is in the process of being done?
You can't really judge how the final product of something is going to look during the renovation-heavy section of the closed season, besides which, all the other additions to the ship you've listed sound much needed and very positive indeed.

I know there's always a keenness to jump down the throats of every change, but look at the improvements around the hotels for this season; everything looks so much nicer, the epic new carpets, the additions around the giant chair, the giant deckchair, the "christmas" lights in Splash look LOVELY, Splash's new sign, the fact that the Splash water feature is having some much-needed attention, a third restaurant added, Dragon Bar's been given a spruce up, and that's just scratching the surface...

The way some people are talking you'd think they'd torn the ship down :?

I'm not jumping down throats and the ship has finished it's renovation,

Yes, the woodwork and mermaid look fine, the point i'm making is the column which had a lovely hand painted pattern on it has just been painted over all one colour and this seems to becoming the new way of doing things.

I agree the new restaurant, bar, chairs etc. look great but some things are just not up to standard and are worse than they were in the first place.

Yeah but there's always a chance they may review it over closed season and alter it...

Unlikely though.

There's a chance but the point is it shouldn't have been done in the first place!

For the centre point of the hotel i'd have thought a bit more effort would have gone into it  :|

2011 / 2012 Closed Season - Resort Updates and Improvements

Someone said its only half done at the moment? It could be a possibility that they painted the bottom half as a 'test' to see what it looked like? Alternatively this block colour could be just phase one in the re-paint. What's to say they won't go back and do more?

It's hard to judge until I see a comparison but I'd rather see the thing looking bright and new then tired and faded anyway...

Here's a before and after shot...

Whereas before the column was painted with blue, green and gold scales it now is painted block red with the odd gold star. (It didn't need painting in the first place )

That doesn't look bad at all. The older one probably was a bit better, but this new one is more vibrant and fits with the whole 'magic' thing.

So what if it didn't need doing, lots of things don't need doing, the fact they're doing them is a good thing.

Not if it's not as good quality as it was in the first place?

It's fine :) Looks like it was taken a while ago.

I'm guessing the pillar just needed painting, as it was looking a bit faded, but it was very expensive to recreate the original design.

I quite like it to be honest, it looks pretty nice. Obviously not as detailed as the original, but nowhere near as bad as its been made to sound.

Yes but it should be as good, despite the cost. If they havn't got the budget they should save up until they have.

I'll be honest, it's not as bad as I was expecting but i'm still not keen.

Crikey, you guys are so MISERABLE, at least they're repanting-it doesn't look bad, it's not a shoddy job you just don't think it looks as good as it did before!

I dont mind it to be honest, Im not so keen on the star detail but the whole Red and Gold theme fits in more with the hotel overall, which is very much red and gold.

But lets be honest, in the grand scheme of things, does one pillar make a difference? No.
But does refurbishment through the hotel make a difference? Yes.

There are times Im more than happy to criticise alton, but at the moment the hotels really cannot be faulted at present. They are getting lots of attention and refurbishment that looks fantastic. I have said it before, and will say it again, its a shame the park doesnt have such a comprehensive and proactive attitude towards the care of the park.

It does look nice, just a shame that the detail has been lost.

Here's a better pic > http://www.fotowhizz.com/alton/altonhotel/024.htm - www.fotowhizz.com

I agree the red and gold fit in with the hotel and near by Dragon Bar - think it would look better without the stars though.  :) Maybe a gold pattern wouldn't go a miss too?

I like refreshed paintwork as much as any other, but why is it Alton Towers only ever seem to remove detail and never add it with anything?  :(
