Alton Towers Toilets

Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:41 pm

I've noticed recently that people seem to keep banging on about toilets in a few of the Alton Towers topics. To try and save them from going off topic and around in circle, I've made this new topic. Feel free to talk about upgrading, moving and refreshing the toilets as well as reviewing and comparing them here so that we can keep other topics toilet free.

I think my general dislike of Alton Towers' toilets is well documented.

Toilets leave such a big impression on people.

Alton's are all really old.

Toilet's topic? Really? :P

I will agree they are very outdated though. Why can't they just update them then theme them to suit each area? Bring the magic back please... toilet magic.

Would anyone else know what I'm talking about if I said there's a knack for the taps?  :P

Push them down then lift off a little to get a decent flow of water?

hahaha, i love a good toilet conversation.

Worryingly the only toilets Ive ever seen get a change at Alton are the ones on towers street, and Ive been visiting towers for some 12 years now.

While they are normally clean, they havent been touched for well over a decade.

The toilets have never been themed though - not even during the 1990s.

Isn't it due to a requirement that everything must be clean and simple for sanitary reasons?

They're moderately clean, they're just so outdated.

Even Thorpe manage to theme some of their toilets - see the Amity ones!

Their cleanliness is the only good thing about them, they are frequently maintained. I just hate those sinks with the ridiculous taps. They make it impossible to wash properly.

I really don't see anything being done within the next 3 years or so, I think we'll be very lucky to see some of the £20 million SW7 budget go on the X-Sector block.

Oh come on now, themed toilets?  :O

The toilet facilities are quite adequate IMO. Always clean and well kept.

Explain what is pleasing about the toilets below Skyride in Valley or those at the top of Towers Street.

My council does better.

I know they have never been themed. However, theming the toilets would being back a small hint of 'magic' to me. The sound effects in the Towers Street toilets are (were?) an example of this, it's relatively cheap and adds a bit of humour into your visit.

What state are the Towers Street toilets in at the moment? (Extraordinary toilets - is it even still called that?)

At present, the toilets across the theme park remind me of toilets you'd come across in a small service station. They lack any 'escapism' quality at all.

I visited Terra Mitica (in Spain) a while back and there toilets were themed to each area. In fact on our first visit we couldn't find the toilets they were that well themed. Many other European theme parks also theme toilets. I know it's quite an extreme thing to ask, although after being in themed toilets I can say it does bring you more into the experience of leaving the real world.

Im not too fussed about themed toilets (yes it would be nice, but I would rather the money went on more important things around the park!). But every set of toilets in the park need a complete refurbishment. They are all really old looking and tired. The worse ones are the ones on Towers street, mainly because they are just too small, if you try to use them at the start of the day its just full of people. They really need to some how refurbish them and make them bigger.

The majority of the toilet blocks at Alton (gloomy wood, x sector, dark forest, etc) all remind me of the kind of toilets you get when you go camping or the ones you find in the town centre. Not something for the UKS top theme park! They all need new floors, re-painting, new sings, new toilets, new lights, new doors. Pretty much new everyone.

Surely it cant be that expensive to do? Someone like Merlin could buy the whole lot in bulk and get it done during the closed season. They could even do one or two blocks a year.

The toilets in Forbidden Valley are probably the nicest out of them all - they look like they were last refurbished in the 90s around the time when Nemesis was built.

I remember the themed toilets at Terra Mitica, although I only recall the ones in the Egyptian area to be themed with paintings on the walls at the entrance to them. Inside they were barely themed.

The toilets at Towers are dreadful, but (IMO) they're not as bad as the majority of Thorpe's, or any of Chessington's non-refurbished blocks (though Chessington are half way through refurbing theirs, and the ones they've done are rather good).

To be blunt, I think the toilets across Merlin need a refresh, with the exception of Legoland's and those already done at Chessington.

They should seriously look towards Europa for inspiration - now those are some toilets to write home about ;)

There's nothing very pleasing about the toilets in the Valley, but then there doesn't need to be. They are just toilets, and serve their purpose well. As for the toilet facilities near the ticket kiosks, I like those, and that's where I usually start the day. I'm sure the cubicle doors feature steampunk illustrations.

James - I can leave the real world behind on a roller coaster. I don't need a themed toilet block to do that for me  :P

Seriously, AT (or any other UK park) could never have themed toilets, as the chavs would soon destroy it.

Toilets at Towers are mostly adequate, though they can get fairly unpleasant on busier days.  I tend to avoid the ones under the skyride though as they're pretty grim and barely fit for purpose due to being too small.

I don't think themed toilet blocks are required or would even be appropriate (as most of them are between areas anyway), but modernisation wouldn't go amiss - maybe get some taps that work properly and don't waste so much water while they're at it.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a Europa fanboy, but what the toilets most lack is music! It'd be so cheap and easy to put in, but would get rid of the way your suddenly yanked out of the escapism whenever you go to the toilet at Towers. They could use ITHOTMK, ride area music or even better, a custom composition like Lingering Moments at EP. Something really pretty and light-orchestral.

OK I'm going to be explicit, because this is a toilet thread anyway. If eating, don't read on. But the main reason public toilets need music is because of err... to disguise certain noises from other visitors who err, aren't feeling well! There, I just said it, what everyone's thinking. Don't blame me, I didn't start this thread, but that's why all theme park toilets should have music. :P

Apart from that the toilets at Towers are so outdated. Especially that horrible strip lighting. They're often not that clean either, the floors are usually quite wet. There should also be toilets at the Air end of Forbidden Valley, the Th13teen end of Dark Forest and most importantly, Katanga Canyon. Themed toilets please (the toilets at EP are absolutely sumptuous) or at least state-of-the-art toilets. Even Maccy D's toilets are better than Towers! Sort it out Alton! Especially the music, ASAP.
