Online Booking Fees Removed - Hurrah!

Sat May 19, 2012 12:48 pm

I meant to post this a while back but it slipped my mind, if it's been discussed elsewhere I'm truly sorry and embarrassed. I did do a search.

Just to note that the ridiculous fee of £1.50 for using a debit card to purchase your tickets on-line has now been removed. The fee still stands for credit card bookings which is standard practice now it seems on most on-line sales.

Theres also a free print at home ticket option too which I don't remember seeing before.

Good News!

:D :D

What fantastic news!

Great move from Alton Towers. Such fees only serve to irritate and anger guests.

That's a brilliant move in a climate where more and more companies are stacking up ridiculous booking/"admin" fees against everything! Yay positivity! :)

I wonder if they had to do that, because if they didn't, all the online discounts would presumably have a booking fee on top?

I am not looking for a negative "slur" on this.

It is good news. And it's nice to have some "good news news" on the homepage.

Merlin? Showing promise?

This was a smart move by Merlin and it's nice to know that with technology online becoming a standard now that there should be no extra booking charge. Nice for some good news in a rollercoaster (if you'll pardon the pun) season.

I'll take some of Merlin's Brew please!

This certainly is Croftgay's kinda good news!! :D He started a similar topic on moneysavingexpert, lmao.

But yes - as it should be!! Paying to give companies money... ridiculous and in this case, ensures a bad taste in the mouth RIGHT from the very start. Smooth move, Towers.  8)

Good news on this, purely there to make an extra buck. Are they still increasing the gate price for those using bogofs? That was ridiculous - Gate price = XYZ but if you have a bogof it's XYZ + a few pounds.  :x

Excellent!

I'm not taking away the limelight from Towers, as it's great they've done this, but I do remember a story about some EU/UK legislation coming in soon to outlaw this?

Edit: The ban is coming into force at the end of 2012. Seems like Towers are jumping the gun on this one. :)

Good news about print at home, will that mean less queues at the ticket offices in the plaza? :D

No, that was scrapped. There was so much uproar about that, they were left with little option.

All they need to do now is remove this ludicrous Merlin VAT crusade, which merely serves to confuse the public, and all will be well again!

That had to be removed! It was almost like they were blaming the UK Government (they have a slight point) but the signs might have well have said "Here's what we want you to pay" & "Here's what it will cost when you pay the Government" VAT is not a new thing and making a big deal about it - by the looks of things - looked bad on Merlin.

It does seem ridiculous to have a booking fee at all, as it only serves to increase the cost of securing a ticket.

Any guest booking online is guaranteed to turn up!

Compare it to this:

A £3.50 Booking Fee will be added to your web transaction.

Ah this is excellant. Whilst an AP holder it won't affect me directly I have ordered tickest for people in the past and felt bad saying yeah it's this price plus so and so because I had to use my card.

Angers me when companies charge you for using a card online, I'm sorry cash doesn't work online! As I said, great move :)

It did put me off last year when I was buying scarefest for the annual pass preview offer. With the booking fee and delivery charge it worked out more expensive than buying it on the day! In the end I just bought it on the day.

I would just like to reiterate this point that Merlin are NOT doing us any favours.  The card charge has been removed due to changes in the law.

The print at home tickets is certainly a positive move, but as not everyone has a printer it would be far more efficient to send the barcode to people's phones, which can then be scanned at the gates. Similar to the system DigiTickets use.

I did notice the booking fee had gone when I booked online last week, so I was pretty pleased about it. The option to print tickets at home is very useful too!

Well done Towers.  :D

Mmm negativity.

How about towers are marketing themselves to try and get people to book online ahead of visit (as can be shown with 40% off if booked more than 7 days in advance or whatever it is), and the way to get people to spend online is by removing the booking fees anyway?

It works in their favour as well, in the way they're trying to do things atm, not just cos the law is changing after this season even finishes.

The option to print at home has been around since a few weeks before opening day.

I know that Thorpe park had print at home last year as I did it when I went to frightnights. It was so much earlier than having to queue in the massive prebooked tickets queue.
