The General Public are definitely not on Alton's side; I just hope it doesn't effect the company too badly
They never have been even on a good day, just look Alton Towers or Thorpe's twitter page on any given day, imbreds posting "I think I deserve a fast pass because Air just broke down, I was in the queue 10 minutes".
In this situation, they right not to go running in with statements and just get on with caring for the victims of the incident, unfortunately the public will speculate based on their expert knowledge of engineering & systems combined with expectation of human error with an added dash of news bias, as to what caused it.
I really have no idea why newspapers, news stations are taking eye witness statements, I think one went along the lines of "but it wasn't very high", I think momentum is more of an issue.
Regards the bent floor panel, that doesn't really surprise me, it always felt paper thin getting onto it, felt like you were going to go through it.
