When the park was sold to Aspro, it was the park that was sold to them, not Oakwood Leisure Ltd., so the company still existed but they no longer owned Oakwood and it was them who got the fine- not Aspro.

In my opinion oakwood has let itself go since the new owners
I went in august, it was quite a busy day, and to obviously save on staff costs they only ran one train on speed and megafobia leading to horrendous ques.
Also the staff were extremely rude, compared to last year when me and my friends had an amazing time. To save further costs removed on ride photo on the apauling brer rabbit, and what did they replace it with?
Gambling machines what a family friendly atmosphere they are making.
Paddy should take back his park!

Agreed. I'm very surprised to hear that Speed was on just one car in August. That'll be the first August that this has been the case. It seems Aspro really are determined to massively cut costs.

There's also now a new cost-cutting policy of if there's no queue for a ride, guests are made to wait up to 10 mins for more people to turn up, so they can fill the ride up.

In what way were the staff rude to you? I've not really come across staff who i'd describe as 'rude', however i know Oakwood staff used to be among the best and friendliest in the bussiness, but haven't seemed as chearful lately.

I would be extrememley interested to know what plans, if any, Aspro, have for the park's development. If it opens again with no new rides next season, this will be the 4th year in a row. And i'm sure they'll put ticket prices up again considering they've gone up twice this year already.

I don't think Aspro are completely wrong to make cut backs. I mean, under Paddy it had been running in the red for four years, but every park needs development and attention to maintain custom... doesn't it?

agreed it makes me angry to think that a park like that wont be running a new attraction next year and if the park hits the 20 pound mark withough an extra attraction i will be looking at groveland.
also it will only be a few quid off alton towers which have sw6 next year.

Just out of curiosity, how is £20 a few quid of Alton's entry fee of £36 (and that will probably be £38 next year anyway!)

I mean, if Alton's entry was £25 then I could understand the comparison, but £16 difference, that is nigh on half price!

I for one haven't got a problem with paying £20 for a day out or even half a day out at a park, I only have issues when the entry fee passes the £30 mark, which is why I don't visit Alton anywhere near as much as I used to.

Very few people pay full price to enter AT, there are a whole heap of BOGOFs available for Merlin parks, whilst for Oakwood there are barely any. Half of AT price is cheaper than the cost of a full Oakwood ticket, where virtually everyone pays full price.

i know whats next.

pre story to how i know, me and a fellow coaster enthusiast from holland embarked on a 7 day trip around the uk to a hole host of coasters and parks. this being the first week in september we embarked to oakwood on a tuesday to find out to our horror that it was shut. oakwood had screwed up on the website so i rang customer services and asked could we just walk around and take some photos. thankfully the manager agreed and we went to walk about. half way around infront of megaphobia we meet the manager and he asked us if we would like a tour of some of the rides we said yes please. to our amazement he procided to take us on a track walk of megaphobia, behind the sceens of it, under it, round it then also of speed and into the maintanence bays were the trains from megaphobia were in pieces and into the storage area where they have 7 rides waiting to be placed. all of them unfortunelty they are all kids rides from a family park in europe.
along the tour we asked alot of questions includeing what actually happened on hydro a few years back, what is usually replaced on speed, there plans for themeing including there going to properly theme the area of speed and what there new ride will be soon.
the next ride will be in 2011 and will be an extreme spinning flat ride from huss. thats all we could get out of him. i will have photos and videos from this event when i have finnished editing them.

Interesting Read gazag

Did you find out where the other Megafobia train has gone? There was originally 2 but this year only 1 :?

I'm guessing the new kids rides have come from the other Aspro parks in Europe and will replace some of the very old kids rides currently in place in the parks children's area.

New attraction for 2011. Well it's good news there planning to keep the park running as a theme park in the future and want to develop the park. Could this be another "Edge" ride similar to the one installed in Paultons Park earlier this year?

i thought they would use a flat ride becouse it wouldnt take that much space in the park but where would they put it?

Interesting read.

As for the two trains on Megafobia, there were still 2 trains there on my last visit in early September, although i don't know if there have been any days this season where 2 have been used. There certainly were several days of 2 train operation in 2008, and the years before. If it is the park's plan to permenantly remove the second train, this is a really really bad move. It's almost like they're accepting that they'll never be as busy as they once were, and besides, last season i went there in August and saw the queue stretching almost to the ride entrance and that was with both trains.

And now that August has been condenced into 8 hours rather than 12, it should be even busier so that second train is needed.

It doesn't surprise me that no major new rides are planned for next year. If a spinning ride is installed, i would seriously warn Aspro that Oakwood don't want anything too intense. Certainly nothing with a 1.4m height restriction. Something of similar intensity to Edge at Paultons would be ideal though.

the park needs something more intense than whats there they have to build something on the hydro scale where it looks intimidating but is not its basically the fear of getting wet it needs a scary theme

the other train is in the engineering are being updated as the 2nd train will be in the close season. alot of the sidewalks are being replaced and the structure jetwashed to clean it all over.

the biggest thing oawood is doing is themeing improvements and they will be having new boats and ride systems for hydro.

yeah i think the childrens rides were from other aspro parks but they just dont have anywhere to put them.

to release my pictures and video im waiting on the guy who i went with to post a trip report elsewhere first

i tell you what these new owners might be trying to work on quality first then new rides it sounds like were getting a better park next year but without the big new ride. if hydro gets the new boats and new systems will it mean that the 1pm opening for it will disappear and it will be a full day because on a warm day i bet everyone thinks '' ill go to oakwood today get a few rides on hydro to cool down''.

Hydro opens at 2pm daily, as the boats require a bare minimum of 12 riders otherwise they wont make it all the way around the system... or at least this is what guests are told. Hopefully the new boats will not have this issue. Off peak days are rediculous. Hydro only gets sent literally like 3 or 4 time in the whole day.

Let's hope these rumoured new boats return to (safe!) lapbars. Although I remember loving the ride, I do remember thinking the OTSR's really detracted from it. Also Perilous Plunge was sheer pain.

That's worrying news Dara. Let's be honest, Oakwood just can't be doing that well... at all. Doesn't sound like they're making a profit on their off-peak days. It's a slippery slope. I think Oakwood just didn't keep their eye on the ball after Megafobia. They waited too long for their next major investment, and much as I love Hydro it's a serious "WTF?!" choice. They've definitely left it too long now. It's such a shame, it looks like they're only just keeping their heads above water when what I'd call their UK "sister" Lightwater is getting very high gate figures.

I think Oakwood is at a fundamental disadvantage anyway, purely due to location. It is at an absolutely awful place. Even AT is better, with all it's restrictions. I think Speed was the wrong choice as well. They could have got another top-notch woodie for about the same price and become the UK's Holiday World. Especially since 3 other parks in the country have got very similar rides to Speed now, and no new woodies have been built. It would really have added to the park's character, and made it "that park with lots of wooden ones".

it will be added but put it this way i can see why adding thrill atractions is the better move at the moment imagine putting another woodie down and then your best attraction after that is something small there building to it and anyway oakwood isnt like any other park.

Major thrill rides is really not what Oakwood require. Rides with universal appeal like Megafobia are what Oakwood have always gone for (or at least tried to :) ).

As for Speed being the wrong decision, you could say that now it isn't very unique (and unique is something that Oakwood are known for), but at the time it really did stand out from the crowd which is what Oakwood are all about.

It was the first Eurofighter in the UK, and still remains the best. Rage opened the following year which i'm sure Oakwood knew about, but i doubt they expected Thorpe to install one 3 years later. I mean lets face it, none of us would have really predicted that for Thorpe before the rumors started.

As for Oakwood's location, i'd say it's very much a 'seasonal' location. From June to August, Oakwood has the potential to do really well, and i'd say it's in an excellent location because Pembrokeshire is such a fantastic and popular holiday destination. And since more and more families are now holidaying in the Uk, this should be benefiting Oakwood.

I agree that too much time has passed since new rides were installed. Three years and counting. But if we look at the pattern before Aspro took over, major new rides were installed on a 3 year basis, and smaller new attractions were added most years.

Megafobia was a great installation in 1996, but really they only got it by chance. At the time it was a new type of concept in roller coaster design, so the McNamaras got it for a very low price.

How is Speed the best eurofighter in the UK? It has no atmosphere, theming and there is no lanscaping to make up for it. I felt the ride was dire and quite frankly felt cheap. But saying that it felt slightly more intense at parts than SAW, but in every other way SAW is better.
