Re: Oakwood's "Hydro" becomes "Drenched"

Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:59 pm

I've always wanted to ride Hydro for some strange reason, and test to see if it's actually the UK's wettest ride. But with competition even from Battle Galleons or Tidal Wave, which actually incoperate just that little bit of theming to make the attraction that little bit better, I doubt it'll live up to my -small- expectations.

But I'm guessing "The tallent/steepest water ride in Europe" does have quite a draw. So why don't they start using that tagline to bring in the costumers?

its like oblivian with a wave but im convinced the old boats were better.
another question is the rebrand a new way of drawing atention to a new restraint because recent ones stop most people from riding it and the procedure is very slow

I've just been browsing Oakwood website... and on the Megafobia page it says...

it’s been voted the best ride in the UK and the third best ride in the world.

Does anybody know where Megafobia was voted the best ride in the UK and the third best in the world? :?

It achieved those results in both the 1998 and 1999 Mitch Hawker Wood Pool. However, it actually topped the poll in 1996 and 1997! Maybe Oakwood are actually unaware of this, as the archives on the Mitch Hawker site only go back to 1998. If however you look at the '98 poll, it also shows you each coaster's position for the previous few years. The past poll results can be found here.

Thanks for that... :) It strikes me as false advertising that they've stated that it was voted the 3rd "best ride" in the world... rather than the 3rd "best wooden coaster" in the world, however.

Oakwood have brought out a lot of marketing material across South Wales. There are a lot of billboards in Cardiff and Newport, the posters follow the same style as the website and show Drenched, Speed and Megaphobia as the three key images with the Oakwood logo in the centre of the poster.

There has also been a lot of radio adverts popping up on the local radio stations although it's the 2010 radio advert which is a bit of an epic fail since Hydro is mentioned on there and not the new name "Drenched".

It's still great to see that there has been a marketing push and there is a lot more advertising around Wales. Since for some people in Wales it can be quite difficult to make a day out to places such as Alton it's great to see Oakwood are trying to make the park more aware with the public. Now all they need is to add some new decent attractions and they could be on with a winner.

Oakwood are jumping tentatively on the children's IP bandwagon, with a Fireman Sam day on park:

Fireman Sam will be taking a break from fighting fires in Pontypandy to meet his fans at Oakwood Theme Park on Saturday, May 28th.

Everyone’s favourite Hero Next Door has been given time off by Station Officer Steele and will spend the day at the popular Pembrokeshire theme park.

There will be the chance to get up close and personal with the legendary Welsh firefighter as he takes part in a series of special meet and greet sessions for younger visitors and there will also be the opportunity to have your picture taken with him.

Changed the topic title too. :)

Been to oakwood today noticed new work on the megaphobia shop and a new fixed sign being built. no signs of construction or landscaping either.
hate to say it but i expect year 6 without new attractions.
i also think there is no buzz there anymore no as alton call it magic.
rides have now gone into rotation treetops with pirate ship every half hour when their clearly getting ques.
megaphobia still remains the best designed queline and speed still has no theming at all along with very fast throughput with one car, its a good ride but today i could feel every connection in the track past the camel hump its as if the cars weren't taking the inpact away.
there was only one food outlet that was open (burgers) and there were signs all over the southern fried chicken stall saying closed for forceable future. attendance in the park was way below what i saw when speed first opened and i hate the fact that hydro (drenched) needs to open at 2pm if it cannot open for the full day why hasn't it been made into an event such as a water display or something to be seen when the ride is closed.

The park, or at least its parent company, have just no money. Therefore nothing invested in it, and nothing coming out of it.

Mega shame, as its a lovely weird place. And it has potential (like any park really), just.. completely the wrong company holding it.

After my first visit to the park in june the park is in a lovely setting but it is in dire need of more rides to make it a full day out. I only stayed there about 3/4 hours and i felt really bored which is a shame. The park made me feel like its got the rides that LWV need to make it move forward and Oakwood needs LWV rides to boost its ride portfolio up.

From another forum.

2012:
A new small/medium ride/attraction
Another year of "sprucing up the park"
Water Fall to get some TLC
Speed finally getting some theming but as of yet no theme's have been decided on.

2013/2014:
Another Major attraction on the scale of Speed

I honestly don't understand why they'd do this... Yes, I'm the first person to criticise when something isn't themed, but at Oakwood, the best theming you have outside of New Orleans is on the pirate ship. Megafobia was never themed, why does Speed now need a theme? By all means make it look less like it's been plonked in a car park, but I don't think that adding some kind of storyline will improve the experience...

Wrong. Megafobia is, quite clearly, themed around sheep. ;)

Besides, Megafobia, and the majority of Oakwood's attractions for that matter, look perfectly fine without theming. Theming a woody, unless done properly, is going to detract from the ride, if anything. Again, with the likes of Treetop Coaster, the surroundings ARE the theme...

Speed, there's surely no denying, sticks out like a sore thumb. It has it's own area, and is painted in a bright "look at me" colour. It's also the parks most well known attraction nowadays, I would argue, and it would be nice to see it with some theming... just so long as it's done properly. A half-arsed effort would leave the ride looking worse than it does now.

Glad to see hear that they're looking into another major ride, which will come in 2014 if they have any sense, in order to avoid competing with SW7. :)

Oakwood: general discussion 2011

Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:42 pm

Cheers Kyrn for reposting my original post :-)

I can confirm that the current managers at Oakwood are currently trying to secure funding from Aspro to fund a new or retheme of Speed for the 2012 season.

I can also tell you the reason the park has seen no new attractions for the last 5-6 years.
When Aspro took over the park back in March 2008 they also took on the parks £6 million debt from the previous owners (think Hydro incident). It was Aspro main aim to reduce this debt as fast as they could to make the park a viable investment. By halting new investments, canceling the Summer Event and cutting down on staff (hence the reason why some smaller rides are run on rotation, others are closed on "off peak" days and more food and drink outlets are closed than before).
By doing this I can tell you the park has now reduced it's debt from £6 million to just over £3 million.

This is why the park is now bringing back it's summer event.

I can also confirm another major investment is currently in the early planning stages for the park.

Also Megafobia has never had a true "theme" as such.

Hey, im off to oakwood next wednesday! Just wondering if anyone has been recently and can let me know what the attendance has been like? Im hoping its been low, so the queues for the rides are short.

Also does anyone know whether this new "after dark" has fireworks at the end of the night like they used to? I hope so! :D

Nathan I've been recently. Attendance has been about normal for this time of year. As long as visit Sat-tues you shouldn't get a problem with queues.

The After Dark event does not feature fireworks this year.

Hope you enjoy your visit

Can't seem to find the normal Oakwood topic. Merge it with this if it still exists...?
