THREE new woodies for the UK, one for Drayton Manor?

Thu Oct 13, 2011 1:31 pm

CoasterForce has gone absolutely mental over the last 24 hours due to the following tweet:

Marcus Gaines (@coastertouring)
10/10/2011 10:41
Apparently yesterday Drayton Manor announced plans to build a wooden coaster.

This guy is from the RCCGB. On Sunday, RCCGB held an official event at Drayton Manor, the "Loopathon". Apparently this Marcus bloke is an extremely well connected and respected source, and writes for several industry magazines.

We all know they are planning to build a major coaster on the Buffalo site in 2013. But some people on CF have said that Colin Bryan ALWAYS talks about his desire to build a woodie, and this isn't anything unusual for an RCCGB event. Here's the original CF topic, which makes very interesting reading.

Also we need a new Drayton topic. ;)

If this is true, then if nothing else, it should convince Alton to get a woody.

If this happens, I will die of excitement. It's the one ride type Drayton Manor NEED, and maybe it'd persuade Alton to pull their fingers out and finally build one, too.

Here's hoping it's true, and here's hoping for a GCI Twister type.

For some reason, CoasterForce didn't post the full tweet! Which is even more incredible and shocking!

Apparently yesterday Drayton Manor announced plans to build a wooden coaster. That means England will see 3 new woodies in the next 5 years.

It seems this guy is very well connected. I think there is really something in this, and that three UK parks are currently planning woodies if he says so. Whether those woodies will actually materialise is anyone's guess.

So what would they be?

Woodie 1: Drayton
Woodie 2: Flamingoland?
Woodie 3:

Flamingoland are the obvious choice, as we know they've wanted to build a woodie, and designed one, in the past. But what would the third park be? Lightwater? Oakwood? Thorpe? All of those seem like possibilities...

I can't see Thorpe getting a woody. That's even more unlikely than Alton. (Prays for Chessington)

As Diogo said I really cant see Thorpe getting a woodie... Maybe Lightwater. I think a woodie at drayton would be a nice idea though.

I know the tweet seems to refer to completely new woodies, but would the reopening of Margate's Scenic Railway count towards the total possibly?

A new wooden coaster.. or two.. or three(!) really sounds like an exciting prospect for the UK. :D

[citation needed]

Chessington is very unlikely to get a woodie, due to noise issues, and Merlin's lack of interest.

Thorpe I can see it, but it'd have to be very big, El Toro style. LC15 is apparently 40 metres which is 130ft, roughly the height of Gravity Group's Hades.

AdamJames, that's a very good point, I doubt he's referring to that but it's possible. If he is, then another of the three could also be the reopening of King Soloman's Mines, which would only leave Drayton's woodie left. :(

HEY MERLIN, GET A LOAD OF THIS!!!

This is extremely exciting news! 2013 will be THE YEAR OF COASTERS for me. SW7 and possibly 3 brand new woodies! :D *faints*

This WILL prove Merlin's surveys wrong and they may finally allow Mr Wardley his chance to build Alton the wooden coaster he's always dreamed of doing?

OOOHHHHHHHH YEEEAAAAHHHH!!!! :P

I am part of the RCCGB, and they DID talk wood at this years Loopathon.

I can confirm that the park ARE considering a woodie in the future, and they did mention that they have been in touch with The Gravity Group and are looking very closely at the ride being built in Europa park. A woodie will NOT happen in 2013 as they told us their new major coaster will be open in 2013, and will be based on a product. While wood is still a while away in this country, it is getting closer and Drayton are very keen to make an enthusiasts dream come true!

*sigh*

So this Drayton woodie will probably come 2016 at the earliest. At least it's going to be Grav Group, who's designs always seem a bit more interesting and extreme than GCIs, and I've never ridden a Grav Group.

I've heard that this "product" (or IP) coaster will be a duelling Vekoma based around Knex, which doesn't really sound like the big thrill coaster we've been promised.

Good lord- a life sized Knex coaster?! Now, that would be awesome. :D

I do believe Drayton will get wood, but this is only the start of our journey and not the end. I think that it is vital that we don't run before we can walk, and on this occasion I think that everything has been stretched a bit too far. I still have hopes as they are very keen, and I do believe it will happen, but it will be at least 2015 or 2016 at the earliest before wood lands inside Drayton's gates.

From the sounds of it, the Vekoma(?) coaster that is due to open in 2013 sounds like it is aimed at the thrill market. I'm not sure though that a "toy" brand would fit the bill though. Anything is possible I guess...

I've never been on a modern woodie so this is great news! 2013? 2015? 2016? I'm not really bothered as long as we get one and it's absolutely incredible! :D

The thought of gaining 3 in the next 5 years is mind blowing though! I hope that this news gets confirmed! Even if it is only 1. :)

Oh I know about Megaphobia but I've never been on it because I can't get there. :/

But that's why I'm really excited about one being made at Drayton in a few years! :D

If it does happen, I think it will push Merlin to buy into wood even more. They are fobbing everyone off with excuses that the public think wood is unsafe; my answer to them is look at the press Blackpool has received in recent years and it has still managed to remain one of the top amusement parks in the country. As for the excuse that young people don't want wood because it is old, that's rubbish. Most of my age group think wood is old because most of the woodies in this country are found inside Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Technology has come a long way since the 1930's, and the only way that public thrill seekers will think that wood today is good is if a park goes out and installs one.

Drayton is the one to watch as I think they are the closest to any park in the UK so far to get one. All we know is that they are keen, but it's still a long way off and nothing has been confirmed.
