Re: TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 9: VOTE NOW!

Sat Jan 14, 2012 9:18 pm

Wow, this is a really tough group, some great rides it there!

10.  The Big One* - Certainly wouldn't have ranked last in some of the other groups but in this group it has no chance!  First drop is good but after that it does absolutely nothing for me.  Completely forceless and rough to boot!

9.  Trace du Hourra* - Mid range as far as the Mack bobs go for me, although I remember my ride in 2010 being significantly worse than 2009s due to massive overuse of trims.  It does get bonus points for not actually being themed to a bobsled for once!

8.  Vampire* - Love the station and the theming in general, just a shame the ride doesn't live up to it.  Would have loved to try it with the original Arrow trains though.

7.  G’sengte Sau - Nicely themed and looks good fun.  In any other group this may have sneaked a qualifying position from me, but not this group.....

6.  DVH* - If this was a poll just on theming of coasters in Europe then this would be top 5 overall material.  The queueline and station are stunning, the best I've yet to experience, and the short dark ride section is also world class.  Just a shame that the coaster part is completely dire, this could have been one hell of a ride in the hands of a decent manufacturer.  The music is also my favourite piece of theme park music :)

5.  Lisebergbanan - Feel quite bad ranking this as low as 5th as it's a ride I've wanted to experience for a long time.  I love old schwarzies and this is a real classic, though if I'm honest the POVs don't do that much for me. But, I will ride it one day soon and form my own opinion!

4.  Speed Monster - Lovely setting and the layout looks fun, if a little uninspired after the norwegian loop.  I do enjoy accelerators and this is one of my most wanted.  Seems to be a good amount of airtime in there too.

3.  Silver Star* - Whilst not being a massive fan of this ride in previous years, my rides in Summer 2011 really made it shoot up in my rankings.  Front row rides are just sublime and it seemed to be offering floater airtime in abundance.  Back row also offers some good airtime, especially off the mid course!  Somehow manages to look beautiful aswell despite being a car park coaster, it looks seriously sexy dominating the skyline, especially at night!

2.  Thunderbird - Before watching POVs, I decided that this would probably be the coaster I denied a qualifying spot, due to the toughness of the group and the fact there are stronger GCIs in the competition.  Then I watched a POV and I can't help myself :P  I love woodies anyway, both GCIs I've ridden are really really good, and this certainly looks no different.  Keeps up a frantic pace and looks like a typical GCI fun filled layout.

1.  Raptor - Looks like a world class offering from B&M and Gardaland, with both the ride itself and the substantial theming.  It is certainly beautiful to look at and looks fun to ride, especially the near misses.  Can't wait to ride it.

Re: TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 9: VOTE NOW!

By far and away the strongest group so far! :D

1. Silver Star *
Really a huge fan of this coaster. I was expecting something bland, but actually it was sensational. An amazing amount of floaty airtime. People who say this isn't intense are wrong I think, the sensation of speed and height is incredible. Leaves you absolutely breathless. Also it looks impeccable, and amazing throughputs obviously.

2. Thundercoaster
A slice of pure insanity from GCI. Looks very much in the school of Troy: long, fast, with some insane airtime and quick changes of direction. And so beautiful I love you GCI.

3. Lisebergbanan
Schwarzkopf at their best, a sodding huge terrain monster with massive arcing helixes over a mountainside. Heaven.

4. Raptor
Looks really great, I've heard only good things and the theming is excellent. But I think the format could be taken much further, maybe with something a little bigger.

5. Transgender Hollander
I thought I would have an asterix next to this one, but it was sadly closed when I visited Efteling. Coaster looks rubbish, but who cares when it has some of the best theming in Europe, including Disney? Also the best ride theme music ever.

6. Gsengte Sau
Looks like the best of the Bobsleds. Any other group this coaster would have qualified. :(

7. Speed Monster
Doesn't look like the best Accelerator to ride, but that Norwegian Loop through the park entrance escalator is stunning and so amazingly unique. Stunningly innovative.

8. Vampire *
Fun ride, but very overrated. And I mean, very overrated, the most overrated ride in the UK. It's fun, but not intense in any way, not even enough for a family-thrill coaster. A lot of wasted opportunity, especially the meandering around after the second lift. The theming and station, while it has ambition, is tatty and falling apart. It needs a vast refurb.

9. The Big One *
Awful ride, slow and boring and tedious. But it does have a cracking (and back cracking) first drop at the back of the train. And I think it has better views than nearly any other coaster on earth.

10. La Trace du Hourra
I think this looks really fun, but I'll take AstroDan's word for how rubbish it is. Still, any other group this wouldn't have come last. Credit for being a bobsleigh without a bobsleigh theme.

1. Raptor* - Incredible. I had the great joy of being able to ride this last year and everything about it was spot on. The ride experience and the themeing were both world class and this definitely deserves to win.

2. Silver Star - Looks fantastic, I've not yet been able to ride a hyper, but they do look good.

3. Speed Monster - I love how this ride fits into it's landscape, the norwegian loop is so well positioned on the side of the hill. Looks like a great coaster too.

4. Lisebergbanan - Looks undoubtably awesome.

5. Thunderbird - A great looking woodie with a layout that just looks fantastic. I must get to one of these GCI's soon.

6. Die Vliegende Hollander - As a whole, it's a remarkable attraction, even if the coaster section does look pretty poor.

7. Vampire* - A great ride, fantastic layout with some awesome themeing. I love it for what it is, but sadly I just can't seem to put it any higher.

8. G Senge Sau - Certainly looks the best of it's type, and the landscaping is very good.

9. The Big One - Looks somewhat dull after the first drop, which apparently it is.

10. Trace du Hourra - Doesn't have much going for it, and these bobsed coasters really don't interest me much.

Re: TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 9: VOTE NOW!

Sun Jan 15, 2012 8:45 am

After changing my votes around three times, I think I've finally become happy with my choices. I agree with others, who say this is the best group yet, I found it very hard choosing. Anyway -

#10 - G'Sengte Sau - Like many others in this group, it probably would have been higher if placed in another. It looks a fun ride, but nothing special.
#9 - La Trace Du  Hourrau* - It might be with slight riding bias that I ranked this above G'Sengte Sau, when in terms of track and train it is probably inferior. Ah well, the whimsicalness of the theming justifies my vote. :P
#8 - Vampire* - Rough, showing it's age greatly, arguably butchered by Vekoma, the end tunnel being a monstrosity (especially in comparison to the fantastic station) - there's a whole lot to hate about Vampire. Yet, it's always a highlight of my Chessington trips. Sucks placing it this low, in another group I probably would have desired it's qualification.
#7- The Big One* - Shoot me, but it's underrated. In my honest opinion, I didn't find it rough, nauseating. It's merely a little bit dull. Doesn't deserve to qualify, but doesn't deserve all the hate either.
#6 - Speed Monster* - Looks a brilliant coaster, well-paced and tranquil settings. Yet, the only thing stopping me giving it a place in the top five, is how it's described by many as rough. And I detest rough Intamins.
#5 -Lisebergbanan - Controversial, but I don't see the fascination with this ride. I watched POV's, and it just looked a bit... meandering. I'll give it the benefit of a doubt, however. I've not heard a bad opinion on it from anyone who's ridden it, so would be ignorant not to.
#4 - Die Vilegender Hollander* - I don't get it. Why is the coaster section so loathed? The only critique I have of it is that it's poorly themed. Anyway, the queue-line, station and dark ride section are near enough perfection, and the coaster section is fun. Not much else. I feel it deserves a place in the next round, but that may be bias (as I've ridden this ride) once again.
#3 - Thunderbird - Looks a great woodie. There's so many brilliant GCI's, by the looks of it, you run out of things to say about them!
#2 - Silver Star - It most certainly looks brilliant. Though, the lack of theming and bad reviews from some keep it off my top spot.
#1 - Raptor - I can't really say much more that hasn't already been said. Is probably a deserving winner of the entire competition.

I can't help but worry that even though I myself voted Raptor top, that it could be getting more and more overrated as time goes on.

You cant Overrate Raptor, its an brilliant Ride. It combines the Feeling of Floorless and Inverted Coaster and the comfort of an Flying Coaster.
Its right that its not agressive ore really fast, but it brings a lot of Fun, ride for ride.
And this is what a NR1 Coaster have do do i think.

Yeah, you may be right there...

I think this group is only weirdly strong due to the failures of the previous voting system. Now the voting system is much fairer, it should mean that the 'seeding system' and the distribution of coasters into their different groups gets a lot fairer as well. :)

TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 9: VOTE NOW!

Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:34 pm

I wouldn't be displeased if Raptor won the competition, I feel it would probably deserve it. It looks a great ride, with some pretty above-decent theming.

I (most likely) will not be gifting it a #1 spot in the final, if it makes it that far. I was merely saying how like many others I've ranked first in their groups, would probably deserve to win the competition. :)

Yes, Raptor is definitely deserving of a place in this years final in my eyes. However, very few of us have actually been on it. It certainly LOOKS brilliant, although the duration is quite short.

While I'm not sure which ride I will be voting for in the finale I know that I would rather see Raptor win then Black Mamba again. The layout looks far more interesting and as good as Mamba's theme is Raptor interacts much better with both the head and leg choppers and guests that aren’t even riding.

This group ends in around 2 hours from now - so keep voting!

As it stands, this is the closest round yet in the battle for the group winner - just two points in it.

We've had 31 members voting so far.

That's surprising, judging from posts it appeared as if Raptor would be the clear winner!

I anticipate the results greatly... :D

This scenario is quite common in the poll this year:

15 people think XXXXX is the best, but 3 people only give it 5 or 6 points as they think it looks bland:
Total Points: Approx. 165

Only 4 people think XXXXX is the best, but 14 people give it 8 or 9 points and nobody votes it poorly:
Total Points: Approx. 162

:)

Re: TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 9: VOTE NOW!

Sun Jan 15, 2012 6:07 pm

Just realised I never got round to posting my thoughts:

Raptor – 2011 was the year B&M hit back at their critics, and their new wingrider is a key element of this.

Thunderbird – I’ve never actually been on a CGI, but based on reputation alone I’m going to place this 2nd,  I'll be riding a few of their coasters this year, so hopefully I can judge them better next time round

Silver Star* - A fantastic coaster, each hill is packed with floater airtime on every hill.  The hammerhead and s bend finale are key highlights.  Doesn't have the intensity of Intamin hypers but it's such fun to ride who really cares?

Speed Monster – One of the more interesting 'custom' accelerators.  I'd much rather ride this than Kanonen from the previous group.

Lisebergbanan – I’m a huge fan of Schwarzkopf coasters and this one looks stunning.  From POVs it looks to have a few too many dead spots though.

The Big One* - I'm not a huge fan of this, but I'd still say it's fairly underrated on here.  In most other groups this would have made my top 5.  It always seems to get drawn against a better hypercoaster though (Goliath last year and Silver Star the year before), so

G'sengte Sau - yet another Gerstlauer bobsled that I've got no idea where to rank as I've never been on any of them.  This is pretty much a guess on my part really...

Die Vliegende Hollander - Stunningly pretty, but clearly a fairly terrible coaster, on reflection I think I might even have ranked this too highly, but I'll know for sure when I visit Efteling later in the year.

Vampire* - I used to be a huge fan of this, as all I'd heard about it before riding was how rubbish it supposedly was.  As a result my initial ranking of this was probably too favourable.  It's not a bad ride by any means (and the station is probably the best in the UK), but for the most part it's fairly forgettable.

La Trace du Hourra* - I was fairly disappointed when I first rode this.  As a fan of PBB's I assumed the grand scale of this one would make for a much better ride, but it never really gets going due to all the block breaks.  Still better than EP's though.

...and this group is clearly between the two B&Ms, with Raptor getting the most 10s and Silvia picking up 8s and 9s :P

Group Results

Q1 Raptor 275
Q2 Silver Star 273
Q3 Lisebergbanan 204
Q4 Thunderbird 200
Q5 Speed Monster 190

6 Vampire 151
7 Die Vliegende Hollander 146
8 The Big One 102
9 G'sengte Say 94
10 Trace du Hourra 70

TOTAL VOTES 31

Observations
In terms of the top two, the closest round yet. Two points difference between Raptor and Silver Star means that their average score was almost identical! With Raptor, B&M's new Wing Rider coaster at Gardaland picking up 14 top scores to Silver Stars 13, they have wiped the floor with all the other rides in this group. That said, practically unknown GCI coaster "Thuderbird" has qualified comfortably, presumably with GCI's rise to prominence in Europe meaning that this coaster is now viewed more favourably than it may have been previously. Long time favourite "Lisebergbanan" even managed to take one persons top score, and has qualified again. 5th place went to "Speed Monster", the unique Accelerator coaster taking two top scores although, given that this was the top seed in this group, it hasn't faired as well as may have been anticipated. A quick mention for Efteling's major "Die Vliegende Hollander" - which has always qualified out of the first round in previous years. This year though, there seems little place for rides which rely on experience/theming in a group like this - and it has stumbled out in 7th place.

Highest / Lowest Scores:
Speed Monster 10 / 2
Silver Star 10 / 3
Lisebergbanan 10 / 2
G'sengte Sau 6 / 1
Thunderbird 10 / 2
Vampire 9 /1
Trace du Hourra 7 / 1
DVH 9 / 1
Big One 9 / 1
Raptor 10 / 4

Once again, the votes showing the massive range in opinion on many of the rides.

NEXT ROUND: 16/1/12

Disappointed Transgender Hollander crashed out.

Like I said before, with the new voting system next year's groups should be much fairer, and will continue to get fairer. :)

But it just goes to prove right what I remember CorineC reported the Efteling management as saying: "We wish we'd got a MACK instead". :P

Indeed. It's saying something when Poseidon actually has a better coaster section than DVH!

TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: Round 1, Group 10: Voting Over

Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:19 pm

*EDIT - apologies for the inclusion of two coasters from the same park in this round. This was unintentional and I did not realise until it was too late to move the coaster - as all other groups had been completed.

Round 1, Group 10 (the last group of round 1)
Voting Time for this round is 2 days (c48 hours). The top 5 ranked coasters will qualify for Round 2

There are 10 coasters in this group. To vote, you need to rank each in order of preference from 1st  (best) to 10th (least favourite). Please remember that when voting, your user name and voting habit will be visible by the poll administrators and may be published on the forum. Both myself (poll co-ordinator) and Chris (poll technical admin) will be monitoring all voting during the poll. Keep an eye out on http://www.facebook.com/towerstimes for updates to start/end times of voting rounds, too!

1st placed coaster is awarded 10 points, 2nd is awarded 9 points etc.

Please inform yourself via the RCDB website for the relevant coaster, which will give you specs and photo's. You can also search Youtube and watch a ride Point Of View (POV) video, otherwise known as an 'onride' video! But remember, these videos often do rollercoasters, particularly those partially or entirely indoors, an injustice.

GROUP 10:
