Re: TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: ROUND 2, GROUP 2: VOTE NOW!

Thu Jan 26, 2012 4:31 pm

As you'd expect at this stage of them competition another very tough group. I'm happy with the order I've gone for though:

10. Wild Mouse - it's by no means bad but it is not good enough to go any further than this in the competition. I would rather go on everything else in this group so it has to be last.

9. Desert Race - Rita isn't my favourite coaster and although this is meant to be better it lags behind the other coasters in the group.

8. Big Thunder Mountain - from POVs I do not see the hype surrounding this, and I have only placed it above Desert Race because I would like to ride it more. Theming does however look brilliant.

7. Batman la Fuga - maybe a bit controversial putting this so low but I did not find riding one of the clones in the summer enjoyable at all. It was just too intense to be enjoyed and left me feeling sick. Therefore I cannot place this any higher.

6. Stealth - the launch is good, there's no denying that, and this is a pure thrill ride. However it is very short and once you have been on the real king of these launch coasters, Ka, the rest appear average at best.

5. Speed - I do love this coaster, it is pure fun and the airtime hill is awesome. By far the best Gerstlauer I have ridden.

4. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster - I really enjoyed the Florida version so assuming this is pretty much the same I'm sure I would enjoy it also.

3. Dragon Khan - I'm surprised with the low position some people are giving this, it looks immense. It doesn't look quite as good as Kumba but if it gets close then this will be an outstanding coaster. It would be a great shame if it didn't get through.

2. Piraten - this is one of the coasters I want to ride the most in Europe, it looks like an incredible airtime machine. A certain for the final I feel.

1. Silver Star - for me this is the only winner of the group despite never having been on it. However I love the two B&M Megas that I have been on, with Apollo's Chariot potentially being my number 1 coaster so I am certain I would love this too.

I think Silver Star, Piraten and Dragon Kahn will make it through to the next round, with the fourth spot really up for grabs. I feel it will be taken by either one of the Disney coasters or Batman.

Wow - a very close round with the top spot looking like it was going to Piraten until the last few votes!

Here goes:

Q1: Silver Star 271
Q2: Piraten 265
Q3: Dragon Khan 213
Q4: Batman La Fuga 212

5: Stealth 186
6: Big Thunder Mountain 174
7: Wild Mouse 138
8: Rock n Roller Coaster 137
9: Speed 114
10: Desert Race 105

TOTAL VOTES: 33

Observations
One of the hot favourites to make the final has gone out. Big Thunder Mountain attracted a lot of peoples top scores - but there was little middle ground. Many people voted it almost bottom. Silver Star and Piraten ended up very close and jostled for the top spot from the beginning. Dragon Khan - a perennial favourite, has done well and qualifies in 3rd. Batman has seen a popularity push this year, and qualifies ahead of Stealth, another coaster which has been top 10 before. Just look at the highest/lowest scores below to see the crazy variation in peoples opinion!

Highest / Lowest Scores:
Silver Star 10 / 2
Piraten: 10 / 2
Dragon Khan 10 / 1
Batman La Fuga 9 / 3
Stealth 10 / 1
Big Thunder Mountain 10 / 1
Wild Mouse 9 / 1
Rock n Roller Coaster 10 / 1
Speed 8 / 1
Desert Race 6 / 1

THE NEXT ROUND WILL BEGIN ON SUNDAY, 29 JANUARY 2012.

Disapointing. Wild Mouse is much better than 7th.

I'm not surprised by the 4 that have gone through here. I did however expect to see Piraten top the group, it was very close.

The Wild Mouse was never going to qualify due to it not being universally rated like Piraten and Silver Star. Personally I think 7th is being very kind on it, but that's just my opinion.

A fair result on the whole.  I'd have liked to see Desert Race and Wild Mouse a bit higher up (Mouse is top 10 for me) but I can see why they didn't perform better.

I'm quite surprised to see just how badly BTM has done this time round though, it consistently got to the latter rounds under the old format.  It's no longer enough for a coaster to have a small group of hardcore fans, and I expect the Ultimate to suffer the same fate whenever it's group comes up.

I also find it very interesting that Batman was the only coaster not to be rated in the bottom two by anyone.

As you said, this really does make the poll so much better this time round.

Big Thunder Mountain is a prime example here. It did get a lot of top placings, presumably from those really big on Disney. However, it was voted in the bottom 3 by a lot of people, too - and so on balance hasn't qualified.

Rides like Batman would not have qualified last season, but now - through the fairer system, it's much more accurate.

Also delighed that, on the whole, the tactical/suspect voting of the early rounds has been pretty much eradicated!

Darkside, I would love to know what you dislike about Speed. It's a brilliant coaster, with the best airtime hill in the UK.

You should post your rankings :D

I only post about the ones that stand out really, cant be bothered posting them all as we mostly share the same opinions.

Speed for me, was horrible. Gave me a head everytime I came off, and the airtime hill was just painful. Ok, not necessarily painful, just not very enjoyable.

And judging by where it finished, I guess most people agree.

I am disappointed that BTM has gone out (it's normally top ten!), but I can also see the fairness of the new system. My one concern with it is that when the final comes around, the vote will be massively split between Blue Fire/Piraten/Black Mamba etc, leading a more average coaster in that group to take the prize.

Apart from that small thing, though, I think that the system is a lot better than other years.

Not quite sure what you mean there, as every ride gets points. Your first place ride gets 10, down to the last place ride getting 1.

^I'd guess he means that, hypothetically, tactical voting is still possible.

Say (hypothetically) 50% wanted Blue Fire to win, and 50% Black Mamba, and there's a tonne of tactical voting. So, first group has lots give Blue Fire 10, Black Mamba 1. Second has lots give Black Mamba 10, Blue Fire 1.

The average score for each turns out near 5, and a more 'average' coaster, that maybe averages 6, wins.

I'd guess that's what Will is alluding to. Seems plausible, but very very unlikely to me - would need a lot of tactical voting for that effect to happen, and luckily I shouldn't think there are anywhere near enough members that would do that.

If anything, votes getting split between good rides is less of a problem now.  In 1st round groups under the old system a highly dominant coaster could get roughly half the votes, meaning that only a few votes separated the rest.  This led to a number of questionable results; for example Balder was eliminated in the first round last year.

Under the new system this isn't a problem, as rides that are universally popular do well rather than those with the biggest groups of die-hard fans.  If a few people like a ride but everyone else hates it then it shouldn't be near the top, and the new voting system accounts for this.

This of course assumes that everyone votes fairly.  The old system was not immune to tactical voting either though - if you thought your favourite would be a clear winner you might have voted for your second favourite to boost it's chances.  No system is perfect, but this one is much better than the old one.

BTM was always going to go out under the new system, too many people (imo unfairly ;) gave it 1/2/3 points, which countered against those of us who gave it 10.

Overall though, I think once again the correct coasters have gone through (based on TTF's general consensus)

Perhaps next year a slightly different points system can be adopted to reward those coasters which come 1st or 2nd (eg, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1)

In the final round, with ten coasters which will probably quite hard to rank, the voting is going to be far more varied than in the rounds we are on now, for example. I also imagine that there will be slightly more tactical voting in the final round.

If this is so, then it is just as easy for a ride which is constantly voted in the middle to win.

For example,

Let's look at what could happen to the top three in a final vote.

If lots of people put Blue Fire top, Khan 2nd, Mamba 3rd
But also, lots of people put Blue Fire 3rd, Khan second and Mamba top,

Therefore Khan would win, even though nobody really wanted it to win.

I know that this example isn't completely perfect, but I hope you get the point.

I'm worried that the result will be a compromise - a ride which nobody really wanted to win. I know that this is a possibility , and an area where the older voting system might've been better (although I don't think we should change back)

However, could it be a possibility to have a final ten round, eliminate eight, followed by a final top two round. In this way the winning coaster would have to get a majority at some point to win the whole thing?

I think Islander explains it well - yes it is unlikely, but it could happen.

I can't tell you how delighted I am that the new voting system has meant that the Disney mafia haven't got their way this year.

I don't honestly believe that the people who rated BTM top in this group really think it was the best coaster. They're doing it because Disney fanboys are the most sheepish of all fanboys.

One observation made is that people who voted Silver Star high, also voted for Piraten high. People who voted BTM high, also voted RnR high.

I guess different people are looking for different features in a stand out coaster.

One of my favourite parts of the poll this year is getting back stage and seeing all the results.

TTF Euro Coaster Poll 2011-12: ROUND 2, GROUP 3: Voting Over.

Mon Jan 30, 2012 6:47 pm

Round 2, Group 3
Voting Time for this round is 3 days (c72 hours). The top FOUR ranked coasters will qualify for the Semi Finals.

There are 10 coasters in this group. To vote, you need to rank each in order of preference from 1st  (best) to 10th (least favourite). Please remember that when voting, your user name and voting habit will be visible by the poll administrators and may be published on the forum. Both myself (poll co-ordinator) and Chris (poll technical admin) will be monitoring all voting during the poll. Keep an eye out on http://www.facebook.com/towerstimes for updates to start/end times of voting rounds, too!

1st placed coaster is awarded 10 points, 2nd is awarded 9 points etc.

Please inform yourself via the RCDB website for the relevant coaster, which will give you specs and photo's. You can also search Youtube and watch a ride Point Of View (POV) video, otherwise known as an 'onride' video! But remember, these videos often do rollercoasters, particularly those partially or entirely indoors, an injustice.

Very interesting group. A whole range of good ride's, controversial rides but not to many definitely great rides. This’ll be a hard one to call.

Another very difficult group.  I've got a clear first and last place but I've no idea what order to place the rest in.  This will need some thought...
