The EDF Energy London Eye

No, the London Eye has not been sold by Merlin.

A three year deal has been signed between Merlin and EDF Energy, which sees naming rights transferred to EDF for the duration of the contract. EDF is a first tier Olympic sponsor, hence the timing of the deal.

The Merlin Entertainments London Eye will be rebranded as the EDF Energy London Eye during it's annual maintenance period, which starts tomorrow and lasts two weeks.

Full details over at BlooLoop

Gah, I really loved Merlin's branding of the Eye

All that re-branding for nothing!

Also there is no way I am calling it The EDF Energy London Eye - I will just call it The Eye or The London Eye. What are they going to do with Blackpool Tower Eye? Will it remain the same?

Meh, everyone will still call it The Eye or The London Eye, just like all sponsorsed things get called their real name.

It's not nice to see it, I hate sponsorships like this, but meh, it's good for all concerned. Merlin get money. EDF get a huge PR boost, and nothing changes but the name and some signs.

I imagine this backlash is just hippy green idiots who have issues with it being sponsored by an energy company.

I have no problem with Merlin selling naming rights to a company, it's one of London's biggest tourist attractions so it makes sense. But EDF Energy has a **** ring to it, in fact it sounds awful.

Oh, who cares? The only really bad about it is that all the lovely purple, new look Merlin branding that was only introduced very recently will now probably all be replaced so soon.

The Electricite De France colours are horrible, though. I hope they choose the colour scheme wisely or it will look revolting.

Oh well, it's a shame, but it isn't really something to cry about.

Hmmm... good news, the GF works for EDF, so wonder if she'll be able to get cheap tickets :P

I hate the way they use the Eye in this way. At least when it was originally BA it actually was somewhat like a flight.

EDF is the State owned French electricity company.

I also have no issues with Merlin selling naming rights to EDF, especially as it seems the sponsorship will pay for the new pods.

Isn't it current/past name technically The Merlin Entertainments London Eye anyway? (Thats what the logo says) I've never heard anyone call it that.

thanks for that, but 12.5 millions for new ventilation and heating? what do you reckon the other 'entertainment features' are?

Yes I know, but installing an air-con isn't very extensive work...

Who says it will just be an air con? And, actually, even just installing an air con would be very extensive work. Each pod would have to be taken down and reassembled which would mean the whole Eye would be out of action for something like a month.

There we have it. My honest opinion? Taken on it's own, it's OK, but I just think the last (one-year) logo was so superb that it really makes this one look naff.

Website's been updated, though it looks like a bodge-job to me: if you look at the source code, you can see that the Merlin logo is still there, just commented out.

I prefer it to the merlin one (There's no white circle representing the eye.. which looked awful, seriously).

Going to look at it today, heard that the show looks amazing now :D
