Past rides at Drayton Manor

Wed Jun 08, 2011 10:59 pm

Apologises if this is in the wrong place or if this topic had already been posted!

I was just thinking about the old rides at Drayton Manor I've been on in the past which aren't there anymore then I just remembered Cyclone (the ride similar to Enterprise at Alton Towers, in case some of you didn't know) and I was wondering why they removed it after such a short time at the park.

Is it because they needed space to build Drunken Barrels? If so, they shouldn't have removed Cyclone and should just put it somewhere else. I know there's not enough space at the park... I was thinking if they still had Cyclone they could just put it where Black Revolver was?

It's a shame really because I went on Cyclone only once or twice and I've been to Drayton Manor a million times. I know there's Enterprise and I've been on it many times but still...

^ Cyclone was removed because of noise/height complaints from locals I believe, and is now situated at Thorpe Park, which replaced there original 'Zodiac' ride. :)
If you go down to the Towers today, you\'d better ride Th13teen. :P

Hahaha oh

I saw Zodiac when I went to Thorpe Park for the first time in 2007 and I didn't even realise it was Cyclone! #-o

Can't remember if I actually went on Zodiac or not! :-k

Yeah, I noticed it was totally closed and all boarded up when I visited DM 3 weeks ago.

Don't know when this happened, to be honest.

I just realised something...
If they complained about the noises/heights, then they shouldn't have lived next to a theme park in the first place lol  There are noises from the other rides anyway?! And some of them are quite high anyway?! :? Lol.

The Black Revolver is being replaced with a Dive Show :)

It's a bit difficult as far as noise and the residents go. People have lived in nearby Fazeley for a long time, after all. It's interesting to note that the local residents were given the chance to see planning applications for Apocalypse, but chose not to, thereby resulting in it being built...or so I've read :)

Lol, good question :P

Well, I assume it's something to do with fancy diving? But honestly, I couldn't say...

Klondike is now at Hayling Island if you want a blast from the past. So is the Super Dragon that was removed to make way for Thomas Land.

Alton or Drayton 2011

Sun Jun 12, 2011 5:29 pm

I know this is going to be a kind of touchy subject on an alton towers forum but ive been thinking about it for the last week. Im not trying to knock any park im just trying to compare the parks in 2011 and see what peoples opinions are. Im going to try and compare various things about the parks and what investments they have made etc. The reason i started this is many people who havnt been to drayton for years are still slamming the park im trying to show people what investments are actually being made.

Prices:

Alton's prices on the day price Adult: £40.80 includings park and sealife - car parking £6

Drayton on the day price adult: £32 includes park, zoo and carparking.

Investment for 2011:

Alton: as far as i know its just been a new show - if there is anything else let me know and il edit this.

Drayton - new coaster cost £2.5 million, numerous rides repainted, shops extended, £12million hotel, new resteraunt, new 4D film.

Visitor numbers 2011

Alton: from what i have heard from people visiting numbers are down from usual.

Drayton: Have had the busiest season ever so far and are expecting it to only get better.

Mood inside park

Alton: when i was younger i always did think alton was a more magical place but now i go there it just doesnt seem anything near the way it was and everywhere i go it seems to be people selling you things.

Drayton: in the last 4 years the amount of families visiting the park has increased and i think it just generally makes the mood much better.

Travel to the park

Alton: i still find it difficult to get to the park without driving. Especially when there is an event on where there's late opening buses just stop running, no trains when you get to the stations.

Drayton - close to tamworth and train links and not far from birmingham.

Target audiance:

Alton: they aim for a family park but really i think they would do better aiming purely at thrill rides, thats why my parents never go as a family they say there is not enough to do for eveyrone.

Drayton: aim for a family park and i think they achieve it there is a bit of something for everyone.

If people think of other things to compare then please say and i will add.

So basically do people think alton could take expample from drayton. or are they doing fine as they are doing.

do people think alton needs a character at the park to bring in families as it has a proven success at drayton.

do people think families who normally go to alton have actually picked to go to drayton this year instead

Im sorry if it doesnt make sense ive been thinking how to make this topic for a couple of days.

This year, myself and a few mates had the option to choose between Drayton Manor or Alton Towers* for a day out a few weeks ago.. and we chose Drayton on the terms they had a new ride and it was cheaper.

Merlin seems to think Alton Towers is popular enough to run on it's own as the UK's most popular park, and therefore think it doesn't require investment, whereas this did the opposite and made us go to their closest competitor in this instance.

The general rule for prices in business is Higher Demand = Higher Price, but I do think Alton Towers are seeing it the wrong way round at the moment unfortunately.

*and none of us own a pass for either parks..

I don't really think there is any major need for this thread per se, because there has already been pages of discussion surrounding investment in 2011 at various parks when compared to Alton Towers.

However, as much as I admire Drayton's recent shrewd investments, plus the fact I enjoyed my day there more than my day at Alton Towers recently, i would still stand by that Alton Towers is the best overall theme park in the UK. That said, Drayton have made better investments. Alton Towers is going through a very low patch at the moment, but I am not going to pretend DMP is better when rollercoasters are my favourite kind of ride and not one at DMP is genuinely top class. Let us also not hide from the fact that DMP have increased ticket prices £4 this season which is more even than Alton Towers.

DMP are doing very well, and are clearly having a considerably more successful 2011 than Alton Towers, though - which can only be a good thing.

the reason i didnt add other parks is to compare the 2 parks in the midlands as they are both within an hour of eachother and to many in the midlands the choice of themepark days out is going to be between these 2 parks rather than others. like i said im not trying to bash alton im just saying in terms of investment could alton learn something from drayton.

Astrodan i agree for coasters i would pick alton over drayton but im more a flat ride person, im the type that if there was time for one ride left to do at any park i would pick a flat ride rather than a coaster.

You see, flat rides as much as they're fun - aren't really big cheese at major theme parks.

You look at Alton Towers, Phantasialand, Europa-Park, PortAventura, Disneyland Paris, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld parks...

Are flat rides major?

No. Flat rides are generally used as cheap fillers at many parks (i.e. I expect AT to add one next season).
