What Would You Improve About rcdb.com? [Please Read]

Sun May 02, 2010 5:55 pm

Hey there. I wasn't sure where to put this on the forums, so I hope this is okay!

This is for a project I am conducting to finish off my final year of my degree. Myself and my group have to create or modify a web site and then present why we have done what we've done.

We have decided to take rcdb.com and create a 'mock-up' of a modifed version of the site. However, it has to fit the users i.e. YOUR needs. Therefore, I would really appreciate you letting me know what can be improved about rcdb.com. The chance to hear about what you guys think would be of great use to us.

I have loads of ideas, but they need to come from you. I'm thinking Web 2.0 features.

So please leave your comments on your ideal improvements to this site which we all use so frequently so we can present our ideas in our presentation and say "we have done this because this is what the users want".

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Hmm, an improved RCDB :-k

Well the most obvious suggest I can come up with is a videos section to match the pictures. Not many videos per ride but simply a good off ride video and a good on ride video.

Bezzzzzer! Christ, another CFer on TTF, rare occasion  Anyway, I'd do the following:

1. Improve the sites design, a more slimlined design, ditch the colour scheme and really work on a more appealing site.
2. More streamlined coding, really strip it down and run it on a more manageable database. Also incorporate a much more in-depth search facility.
3. Incorporate a new AJAX based layout to ride pages, allowing much more customization.

That's all I can think of right now. :D

RCDB is hard to improve and is by far the most comprehensive record of coasters in existence but there's one thing that annoys me. It is often difficult to to find more obscure coasters that you cannot remember the name of or the name of the park they are in. The tree view method is okay but unless you have an amazing knowledge of the geography of each individual country, it is somewhat pointless.

I think that to ease this problem, the tags system used to search for coasters should be more comprehensive. For a start, more informal tags that enthusiasts usually attach to coasters could be used in conjunction with the usual suspended/sitdown, steel/wood style tags. These might include multi-looper, hyper coaster, jet coaster, twister coaster, terrain or even having the coasters categorised by their track colour. It might sound a bit daft but if you've only seen a photo of a coaster, its colour is pretty much the best thing you've got to go on outside of track style.

Another nice addition to the search features would be the type of coasters that you don't want to show up on the list such as Kiddie Coasters if you're looking for an obscure large steel coaster. This would stop your search from being populated by a million Wacky Worms and Wild Mice that you can't tell are what they are until you click on them. At the moment there's no way of preventing this as although there is a Kiddie Coaster tag, they still fall under the same categories as the coaster you are searching for.

None of this is in any way a complaint as RCDB as it stands is still excellent but there are small improvements that could be made

How about advancing tree view into a view of the world such as Google maps. As most of the parks already have a link to there Google maps location the map could show highlighted areas were attractions are. Zooming in will reveal more detail such as the park name.

That way it would be easier to find parks that you know roughly where they are but have no idea of the local province name.

The one thing I wouldn't do is change the site design. Like Screamscape, the RCDB has a very old, simple 'web 1.0' style design which I think works really well on both sites in simply presenting the information. A few things I would change:

1. Try and make sure that the first photo of every ride is an aerial shot of the complete layout, or as close as possible to that.

2. Have more non-statistical information about each ride. Actually make use of the "history" and "information" columns. Think of all the interesting little tid-bits about the design, and everything else we know about Th13teen that just aren't showed on the site.

3. Don't agree about videos, you can find them on YouTube.

4. Any rides that have had accidents should have an additional accident section.

5. Allow a section for users to add their own tags to each coaster, like they can to stories on Slashdot. Then have a special tag search, and when you search in it the rollercoaster with the most number of that tags comes up. So if you search "rough" then Gouderix might come up, or if you search "wild west" then hopefully all wild west themed coasters will pop up.

6. Possible an automated system where users can rate each coaster out of 10, and then the RCDB could show a leaderboard of highest rated coasters. Obviously just a bit of fun, not as comprehensive as Mitch Hawkers.
