Was this massive trench that is being dug shown on the planning applications?

If the trench is this then they are simply clearing down ready to start the foundations for supports I guess.

The height markings and line difference show it to be quite close to the ground at some points, apart from that 'trench', the corners near the station, and the surrounding foundations of 'Themeing Envelope 2'. That is the last of the foundations right?

just what I was thinking. I guess it flattens out over the concrete block/launch/mechanics then goes up again

Its getting rather exciting at Towers now. They are really cracking on with building it. I guess the good weather has helped an awful lot too to get the foundations etc done. We may actually get an early opening date for this if they carry on at the speed they are going.

As far as I can remember, The hill is expected to start fairly steep, then around a third of the way up the angle is made smaller for the remainder of the hill. :)

I do also think its gradient is seeming steeper as a result of the (possibly temporary) bracing between the bents. Crudely drawing a line between the track support on each bent gives a better idea of how steep it'll actually be, as well as indicating where the gradient will potentially change.

Sounds good to me.. if this is the case then with the gradient changing a third of the way, is the launch lift all of the lift or a section?

I think that's a discussion best for the speculation topic because no one knows yet!

On the left-hand side of another image posted by Theme Park Guide it can also be seen that the supports for the turn between the maintenance and station buildings are being installed today. Presumably this is the wood that has been sitting in the pre-show area.

Its suddenly dawning on me that Alton Towers is getting a woodie after so many years of wanting one. I never thought I'd see the day!

Never thought we'd genuinely see a woodie going up at Towers, I can't believe it. Like many other here, it's really dawning on me what's happening now.

The following photo was posted in the MAP Facebook group showing that today's construction saw bents for the lift/launch hill go up until just past the concrete block. It's also just possible to make out the roof trusses that have gone in for the Comms Building, with work on this also shown in the previously posted photos from Theme Park Guide.

I can't wait to see the progress when I visit in July! It's seeming like it's going to be a fast construction from what I'm seeing on this page; station, theming and track getting constructed so far! I hope lots of progress is made by the time I visit. I may get some photos too...

What is the actual purpose of the change in gradient?
