Alton Towers: 10 Year Plan Revealed!

Wed Jun 24, 2009 7:07 pm

Details from TT News:

Whether you are a local resident, avid theme park go-er or just a little curious, Alton Towers will welcome everyone as they give the public a rare glimpse into the future of the resort this weekend.

Over the past year or so, the resort management team and Merlin Entertainments have been putting together a massive £multi-million longer term plan - the first time that they have been able to do so for many years.

There are set to be new rides and accommodation along with heritage and infrastructure, which will presumably all be kicked off with the Secret Weapon Six rollercoaster project for 2010. Ian Crabbe, director at the resort, had the following to say:

"We very much hope that our local community will be pleased by our confidence in the future of the resort, and interested in our broad development strategy, particularly in the current economic environment.

"However, this exhibition is open to everybody who has an interest in the resort, not just residents of Alton and Farley.

"Our economic impact spreads throughout the Staffordshire Moorlands and the West Midlands and a stable future for us represents good news for the many businesses that also rely on us."

If you would like to go and see the blueprint for Alton Towers over the next decade, you can visit the Emperor Suite at the Alton Towers Hotel on Friday 26th June from 12:00noon to 9:00pm or on Saturday 27th June from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

We look forward to bringing you details as they come in!

Is the 10 year plan 2010 - 2020 or 2011 - 2021?
If its 2010 - 2020 I'd definitely like some more information on SW6, maybe even concept art?

Be interesting to see what ideas the resort has, and how much depth the exhibition will show. (I can't see too many secrets being revealed)

Another coaster in Ug Land?
Bit much really even if it is a woodie.

And in all honesty it's not Enterprise that needs to go, in fact out of AT's 4 flats it's probably the best of the pack, despite its age!

The age of the ride, and the fact that it looks transportable is not ideal. However I agree, for me Submission is a weaker ride.

Thank you ATA Dan!

Wooden roller coaster, possibly sited in Ug Land - Great news, We've been wanting wood for years.
Secret Weapon 6 - No Comment, I've said it all before.
Two new hotels (one similar to the existing hotels, the other a series of chalets/log cabins) - Two new forms of accommodation?! Thats a lot of people and money. Very big for the resort.
A large extension to the waterpark, Cariba Creek - So needed, its too small and over-crowded. A large extension, hopefully with more unique slides.
Park entrance to be relocated closer to the hotels - It will be sad to see Towers Street go, but much needed for increase the resort feel, especially with a new hotel and log cabins.
Several new smaller rides - I'm taking this to mean improvements such as Mutiny Bay and Cloud Cuckoo Land.
Enterprise to finally leave the park - There is more to this than just Enterprise leaving, I can see it relating to the Black Hole tent.

I shall make further judgements as more details emerge on Friday and Saturday.

Can't wait to find out what happens! I think three major roller coasters in UG land is unlikely although i'd love to see it happen. To be honest, I'd be sad if there was a new entrance, I love the excitement of walking down Towers Street looking at the Towers.

Interesting, I hope Enterprise stays, and if the entrance is moved, that will probably change the park too much, small rides should be near the front to draw people in gently, rather than walk straight into Forbidden Valley and Nemesis, with all the small rides hidden away, and lets not forget the view as you walk into Towers Street. Speaking of TS, that would be removed, which wouldn't make sense, having to remove a whole area, and besides, the monorail has just been renovated, doesn't make sense to make it redundant.

I can see them making small log cabin type accommodation and a big hotel, and a wooden coaster will be good, but with Rita and SW6, I doubt that will be in Ug Land.

Dont forget that this is a 10 year plan - the movement of the entrance could be planned for 2019/20, when the monorail would probably be starting to look a bit shabby again :) They probably wouldnt move the entrance until the two "future hotels" were finished, and there is no way that they would be done until around the end of the 10 year plan anyway. Forbidden valley isnt the only area that could be used as a new entrance either, looking on google earth.

It would be unusual to see 3 major coasters in the same area. But, If it was a reinvention of a cross valley wooden rollercoaster, and only contained the station, then It would be more do-able :) UgLand could technically be "extended" towards the old coaster corner too, surely?

Dont forget, the ATA announcement only shows "rumoured" inclusions - they're not definite. That said, ATA are usually pretty accurate.

I think Dan (ATA) wants those details to be taken with a pinch of salt - but I think it's fair to say that some of them are fairly logical when you consider it.

- Water Park expansion has been on the cards before
- Woodie has been on the cards before
- New hotel has been widely touted
- New small rides is pretty obvious, it's a theme park after all

The entrance stuff and lower-cost accommodation is perhaps most noteworthy, although I cannot for the life of me see them closing Towers St!

Right, anyone going on Friday? I should be there on Friday for the 12:30 opening. Anyone fancy meeting up for it?

If I'm the only person there, I obviously need to be able to contact someone who can post it up on TTF as soon as I get the details! :)

Anyone get the impression some of the things said there are either really old or just blatant lies?

The woody idea for Ugland I think is a load of bull and I think that its just what they "were" planning to do. Not over confident that what AT are showing here will happen and Id take everything with a huge pinch of salt.

I agree Dave .... theres some stuff on there tha really doesn't add up.

Wooden roller coaster, possibly sited in Ug Land: I really can't see it, it would seem to me that a woodie would create too many complaints from the locals re: noise levels unless it was a junior woodie.

Secret Weapon 6: No surprise there although not a surprise that its on the MTDP either though

Two new hotels (one similar to the existing hotels, the other a series of chalets/log cabins) Two seems a bit ambitious, I wouldn't be surprised to see either a lower cost hotel or lower sot chalets or log cabins.

A large extension to the waterpark, Cariba Creek: I'm not exactly surprised by this annoucement, Cariba Creek as much as I love it, needs more to get repeat business, I've been twice this year and am getting a little bored by the offerings as good as it is, they do need to invest in some new slides and attractions which I can only see happening if they expand the waterpark.

Park entrance to be relocated closer to the hotels: I really really hope this doesn't happen, where as I can understand the logic, Towers flows nicely around the lake, If you had an entrance to the park closer to the hotels realistically you're talking in Forbidden Valley, which is aimed at Thrill Seekers, it's not really much cop for families and isn't generic enough like Towers Street is. Forbidden Valley would be far too busy in the morning, over a long period of time I could see it being implemented but I'm not really sure how and if it really needs it.

Several new smaller rides: No surprise - seems like a fairly generic announcement

Enterprise to finally leave the park: No great loss, it's a great filler ride but to be hoenst it's had it's time ... it's very 80's and isn't probably the image the park isn't going for right now.

Overall if this is it i'm a little disappointed, I was hoping for a little bit more detail, not everything of course for it to spoil the surprise but I was hoping for more of a plan of X type or ride to Y area of Park and so on ....

Park entrance to be relocated closer to the hotels

Does this mean the possibility of the end for the monorail?!?

Cannot see that. Why would they pay for the vinyl's to be added if they planned to scrap the whole ride within 10 years?

The replacement entrance I very, VERY much doubt.
