My only concern with Shrek 4D is that it will most likely be the same ride that is in Universal Studios in Florida, which itself is almost ten years old. That being said, the ride is still fairly entertaining and I can bet that there are millions of people in the UK that haven't been to Orlando, so it's great that they get a chance to experience it.

Making a whole Shrek-themed land is also a pretty cool idea, and makes the idea of Shrek 4D so much more bearable. Looking forward to seeing it :D

If Shrek 4D is installed, it most likely will be the same attraction as it is in Universal, I don't see Alton changing it. Would cost them less to install an existing product.

I look forward to Shrek 4D, as it'll be a nice queue sponge for other attractions. New developments coming to Alton can only be a good thing in this case, seeing as it replaces nothing.

Don't know if you guys have seen this:

http://www.screamscape.com/html/alton_towers.htm

According to Screamscape, the deal between Alton Towers and Dreamworks if off and they are looking for something else.

Whether this is true is a completely different thing?!?

Anyone else know more?

If this is true then I say fair play to Dreamworks. Shrek 3D is a high quality attraction with a great pre show. If Alton aren't gonna do it justice then they shouldn't even bother. Sadly, this looks set to be yet another chapter in the 'UK parks just aren't willing to go that extra mile' saga. Big shame really. Been quite a ride though, 22 pages!

If true this news certainly shows the difference in budget between AT and American parks.

Serves Towers right, if they are not up for spending a bit of money then no surprise Dreamworks aren't happy!

Sounds like Towers were trying to do it cheap, just get the film and thats it. Which would be awful!

Nevermind, guess we'll just get some generic movie then with no thought put in.

Shrek attraction for 2011?

Thu Dec 02, 2010 11:46 am

I'm very surprised to hear this news, the plans for next year were so far along.

Alton have made a big mistake here, most generic 4D films aren't great. And Shrek was much more marketable than a standard 4D cinema.

But fair play to Dreamworks for protecting their IP. Alton were obviously not going to do the franchise justice.

So, what does this mean for next year? I presume The Bookworm will now be staying.

I doubt there is time for a custom film to be made, so it will be one of the standard films. I hope its something that will fit in storybook land.

Why does it seem that Alton are taking the cheap way out yes I can understand after a 15 Million investment in TH13TEEN but surely to attract visitors they should be putting 110% back into the park every year to attract visitors again and again if it is just a generic movie of some kind then its hardly gonna be very attractive is it I mean 4D Cinemas has litteraly cropped up everywhere across the UK and theres nothing WOW about them now.. If It was Shrek themed that would have added the extra WOW factor to it. A shame really in my eyes.

I'm hoping to see the return of The Adventures of Lord Left to Alton's extra dimensional arena

This is a shame indeed. It is an understandable thing on Dreamworks' part because they would evidently want something to give them even more success with the franchise. I'm undecided on whether a potential queue-grabbing IP has been dashed because, as we all know, IPs are just a 'cheaper' way of dealing with themes.

Nonetheless, Towers have made a mistake in dealing for the cheap with Dreamworks, so they will have to try their up-most best to have a ready-and-waiting 4D film which will be entertaining and a queue grabber in the old Tent. I also hope they will spruce up the area around the Tent to make it look more pleasing and appealing to enter, and if they're going to do this cheaply then they need to do this creatively.

When the Shrek idea was thrown in the air many on here fought back in 'anger', now it looks like it isn't going to happen it's become a 'shame' :) Oh I dunno.

So my guess right now would be that the majority of the cinema would have been either on site or on way from where it's manufactured?

If this is true, what is the likely hood that the signage, posters etc. (maybe pre-show props) would have already been made and would be ready to be shipped? What a waste!

But, Merlin must still have the rights to show Pirates 4D (which I loved at Thorpe Park). They replaced it with the garbage there is now (Time Voyagers) but surely this is a good film to show (even if it's not in Mutiny Bay). I for one would love to see it arrive Alton Towers; would open it up to a whole new market.

HA HA HA!

Bloody serves Alton Towers right! Oh man I feel vindicated. For years they've been rewarded for their shoddy make-do theming with increasing visitor numbers. Finally someone is punishing them for their lacklustre money-grabbing attitude.

GO DREAMWORKS!

TowersTimes now has a news story up about the Shrek cancellation. (After it has now been confirmed to us also)

It has been revealed that next year's new 4D Cinema for Alton Towers will no longer have a Shrek theme. The news about the 2011 new attraction was first broke by TowersTimes in October.

Rumours are suggesting that Dreamworks, the creators of Shrek, are unhappy with the quality of the proposed Far, Far, Away retheme for Storybook Land and have therefore cancelled the contract.

This news will come as a huge surprise for all those involved as the plans were already at a mature stage, with the tent already emptied ready for construction to begin.

Although the Shrek IP was not the most popular choice amongst the TowersTimes community, Shrek would have been much more marketable compared with other generic 4D films.

It is likely that the 4D Cinema is being built by Simworx, who have recently built a 4D Cinema in Sea Life Birmingham, another attraction owned by Merlin Entertainments.
There are currently no rumours circulating about what will replace the Shrek film, but we will keep you updated when we hear more. It could be a possibility that one of the Simworx in-house 4D films are now used.

This should free up a LOT of cash for next year's budget. Air tunnel/Beastie replacement anyone?

I can see this going rather... badly now. It is a shame that this has happened, because the project would have obviously got quite far. There isn't much hope for a decent attraction next year now.

However, I am extremely glad that we will not be seeing Shrek come to the Towers, nor a botch up retheme of Storybook Land for that matter (if one was ever planned).

So, yet another reason why not to use IPs. I am surprised they got away with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to be honest because the Dahl family was supposedly very protective over their brand. I guess that was a case of the plans looking/sounding good enough. So although the final ride was poor, it was too late by then and all they could do was tell Alton to make a few tweaks like they did.

Well, thank you Shrek for being "too good" for Alton Towers. :P

Good point Sam, I presume that the rights for Shrek would have been taking up a large chunk of the budget.
Certainly it would be costing a lot more than other non-IP based 4D films.

I seriously hate to be pessimistic, but I can see us spending the rest of the Closed Season anticipating the use of this money, only to find that it just...hasn't been spent
Surely if anything a retheme/touchup like the Air tunnel is more viable, though, isn't it a bit late to submit planning permission for anything to be built in time for next season?
