Plans to extend the Alton Towers Hotel back in the pipeline

Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:13 pm

In 2006 alton got planning permission to extend the Alton Towers hotel with 26 executive suites, the plans were however put on hold. AS the time limit on the planning application has come to an end that park have applied for an extension to the planning application which would then allow them to build the extension. The info has come from the below artcle-

It's a great thing to hear, but surely they need more normal rooms not suites?

I am sure if they plan to build the suites that they think they have the need for them over adding more normal rooms. I think we will see another hotel some where between 2015-2019 to add more normal rooms.

Aye, but they need a lot more than just 24 more normal rooms. :P

All in all, good to see more hotel work. :D

i dont think this is any development of the plans, just the time expiring on the application.

Wasnt the plan originally put in to up the value of the resort during a sale between ownership anyway?

I am sure it must be part of their plans for the next 3-5 years otherwise why bother getting the planning application renewed.

I just hope they make it so it fits in with the original hotel, same architecture etc.! I presume it would be built on the left wing looking onto the carparks? [-o<

from what i remember it will be same brick and style as the current hotel.
I think it went in an 'L' shape connecting near the spa and heading out towards the old field of screams space.

The rooms were quite large, having a central 'wall' in the middle on one side was the normal bed etc and the opposite was a sofa - which could also convert into another bed.
The wall contained a TV which could spin 360 to face either the bed or the sofa.
It also had an ipod dock, internet access etc.
The bathrooms were significantly larger than standard rooms too.

I believe the rooms were intended for high end business users with the conference facilities being key.

If they do build it, im sure they would. In 2003 the spa & conference centre were built in the same style & that was 7 years after the original building was constructed, so Im sure they will be able to do it in the same style again.

Only I can visualise a Pine Lodge themed hotel for the future, or a lodge park with individual lodges. (Possibility for future maybe?)

I would still prefer a form of cheaper accommodation over a hotel extension (i.e Log cabins..)...

Ahh yes I came across this a while back whilst perusing the local planning site. It is interesting to note but maybe AT are just keeping their options open. I found the planning application for the log flume replacement much more interesting to be honest.

:)[/quote] The conference centre was newly built in 2003 :) But the spa building has been there since 1996 (When ATH opened) as this was Pirates Lagoon Swimming pool and leisure area :)

This extension does sound good though hopefully the suites can be themed on AT Rides past and present Nemesis Suite (again :D ) Thunder Looper rm Beast suite Rita Rm etc...
Whatever the weather outside it\'s always tropical at Cariba Creek

i personally can see a possible LEGO themed hotel, since Merlin are expanding the LEGO park brand with the LEGO discovery center, it could make sense having a LEGO hotel in the park, could even be part of a future Mini Legoland family Park area. just don't count Merlin out when it comes to mixed Branding, an alpine lodge style hotel would seam like a crude disney copy, and Alton is very much about Firsts and big obvious brands that they can control.

lets have a few ideas for what the next hotel theme could be and start a Poll and see if Alton/Merlin will listen.

I highly doubt that a hotel with a LEGO theme would be considered for Alton Towers, considering that a hotel is currently being built at Legoland itself.

I also can't see a Legoland area being added to the park, as not only would the theme be unoriginal, and detract from the appeal of Legoland and LDC, but also involves a whole load of legal complications about the Lego brand and what kind of coverage it can have.

I just can't see the prominence of the Lego brand in the hotels extending beyond the sandcastle in Splash Landings :).

i think most of the legal problems have been eliminated as lego sold the park branding to merlin, and since they own 30% of the venture i don't see them complaining at an expansion.

as for a lego area in the park, it is possible, and we already see lego sold in the park so i don't think you can count it out just yet.

I think having a lego area/random lego hotel at a merlin theme park would be seen as diluting the lego brand, and something lego does not want. They're incredibly picky about their brand!

While within any ATH expansion I doubt we will see any lego, on the resort wide, i think its an amount of time.

When 'cred street' closed and went under a retheme, one of the possible contenders was allegedly a lego street.
Legoland california launched a legoland waterpark which went down amazingly well apparently with the line of any new waterparks to be legoland ones - even at non legoland sites.

So we have alton, with an underused/overlooked water park, an announcement that interbranding through merlin areas is to become the norm (more sealife / dungeon etc) attractions in with another attraction.
Perhaps in the future we will see the alton water park become a lego one, with a seperate entrance and become more independent of the hotel.

finally someone gets it, you don't spend good money on a brand and not use it, and no matter what we think lego could probably be integrated into the park and resort quite well if planned properly, and as mentioned earlier lego does have a say in the use of the brand but they cleared most of the legal rubbish when they sold the park brand to merlin and took a 30% share.

I imagine we will see new accommodation, not just this but some sort of Tipidorf log cabins style accommodation, in 2013 to cope with the extra demand for SW7. Europa are adding a hotel the same year as a major new rollercoaster, and to a lesser extent, Drayton Manor. This isn't a coincidence!
