Idea: Alton's own 'Aquanura'

Wed May 09, 2012 10:43 am

After looking at Efteling's new 'Aquanura' fountain show and seeing how spectacular it will be, I wondered if something similar could be done at Alton Towers?

This is some concept art for 'Aquaruna':

In my opinion, even something that's half as good as this would be a great addition! :)

My idea is that the fountains would be constructed on the lake in front of the Towers as it's a great setting, accessible and everyone walks past it at some point during their day out. Two new paths could be created (possibly replacing existing ones so as not to spoil the lawns) that run along the lake to allow people to get the best views of such an attraction.

Small displays could be done each day at certain times (i.e. morning, lunch and towards the end of the day) and/or the fountains could be incorporated into the fireworks and any other types of events that take place on the lawns.

My own dodgy concept art:

Merlin are yet to invest more in the entertainments aspect of the park, so perhaps this might be a better idea, as it's something they can run whenever and they can choose what settings to run the fountains on, and there's no need to pay actors, only someone to over see the display and ensure everything goes smoothly.

Alton Towers used to have the fountain show in the Talbot Street theatre a few years back, so they've got experience with this sort of thing.

There are so many ways to make Alton Towers even more magical and I feel that this would really help. Especially if the fountains were synchronised to classical versions of some of the music that can be heard around the park. Imagine seeing a display with red lasers to the Nemesis theme in the evening or 'In the Hall of the Mountain King on a sunny day?

Does anyone else think something similar to 'Aquanura' might be good at Alton Towers?

:)

yes actually :)

it would be a fantastic addition to the towers line up, and would definitely go a long way to making the place feel "magical" again. i would love to see a display timed to ITHOTMK, it could also add to fireworks events as well.

but the park closes at 5 most nights, would that mean only halloween and fireworks night?

Fountains can run in the day, but they could run in evenings when the park is open later at the end of the season and over the holidays, etc...

Funnily enough I drawn up (rough) plans myself a few years ago of fountains being located on the lake, I'll have to dig for them sometime and post them up on here. :)

I think it's a great idea, it's one that I've thought of for years now, in fact I first thought up for the idea when visiting Portaventura back in 2008.

The beauty of such a system is that it allows it to be used during the fireworks, during the summer (perhaps as a end of the night show, with the possibility of lights and lasers) and even for Scarefest. Then if Alton wished they could be used like how Portaventura uses there fountains, leaving them on in the morning when the park opens, and in the afternoon when the park closes - and then leaving off between those hours of the day.

Entertainments is lacking incredibly at Alton Towers. The slow decline in entertainments in the UK theme park industry over the past decade is appalling. There's a big market out there to start introducing these things into parks. Something on the lake is the best way to slowly roll out new big scale 'shows' to guests (an ice show or something equivalent is needed to be honest, but then I guess the boat has sailed for anything like that to make it's way onto resort), it is something that will grab peoples attention immediately and could just give park entertainments the spark it needs.

While this is something unlikely to happen, I just wish entertainments could get more of a budget, at the moment there is nothing that appeals to me. All we have as a live show is the Pirates of Mutiny Bay show, which, for me at least, is too focused at young families/kids. There needs to be a show, or form of entertainment venue that can appeal to ALL ages. Surly that's what Alton Towers aims to do, offer something for everyone? The ice shows were something for all ages, while they may not return, fountains are perfect to suit families, teenagers and adults alike.

Do you know how much a system would cost to install? Obviously, it all depends on complexity and scale, but a rough figure would be interesting to know.

The only price I can find of a WET Design (company that is making Efteling's) display is the show in front of the Bellagio hotel and casino in Las Vegas which apparently cost around $40 million (nearly £25 million). But that's a huge show and obviously not something that Merlin would need to do for Alton Towers. However, something that's even 1/4 as big would be absolutely brilliant!

Woooooow! :P

That's not a bad idea  The only problem I can think of is English Heratige... bet you they wouldn't allow it.

Not a bad idea actually, seems like a top investment that could be used in the MTYDP.

People only get ideas like this from having a day off! :P

Does seem a bit grand, American and tacky for Alton and the locals would reject it, thus making a hefty development process.

Not always. It just depends on how they would be done. If they're too big and not done with good music then I agree, but I there are so many beautiful fountain displays across the globe and some at Alton Towers could become quite iconic.

It's the sort of investment that will pay-off for many years to come. The fountains can be changed and updated over many, many years to constantly bring something unique to the resort. People said that Sonic Spinball ruined part of the charm of walking down Towers Street to the grand view of the Towers, so something like a fountain display beneath them as you walk towards the end of the street may just help to restore some of that charm.

thinking about it, what planning permission does a fountain, or group of fountains, actually need. being as the body of water already exists, surely they don't need permission to stick one in there
like Diogo says, the only problem that may occur is as a result of heritage concerns, but then there was that pirate show on the lake many years ago, and there is currently the golf challenge making use of the lake. provided they don't do any excavating, i don't see any issue there either.

I'm not sure, Boz. The powerful fountain effects can create quite a boom to blast the water high. I guess they'd work that out and create fountains according to noise levels though.

Edit: Anyone who wants to know what In the Hall of the Mountain King sounds/looks like when it's synchronised with fountains:

I see something like Disney Dreams really, where during the day some small 5 minute max shows go on with a small set of music (Towers Street or HOTMK) then during late night openings such as summer, halloween and fireworks one or two 20-30 minute shows occur...

The chance to have park opening shows as well would be quite good, make the opening more grand and what-not... Might not be to scale of Aquanara/World of Colour but if they could implement a decent enough showcase, then this would be a very good addition to the park...

We can but dream...

Fountains that are 1/4 the size of the display in front of the Bellagio would be around about £6.25 million to install. I'm sure Merlin could cover that (or something slightly bigger if they wanted to push the boat out :P ) in a small investment year, or alongside another small attraction during a medium investment year.

I do kind of like the idea its something else (aside from another german coaster people want) and I guess fountains have a degree of class and can be switched off so maybe English Heritage will let up a bit.
Well done using pictures - its good to be able to see the concepts people are talking about. :D

I find this to be one of many, many possible ideas as to round-the-park shows and entertainment which doesn't involve standing in-line. It's the kind of thing which would help to bring back the magic and show the park to be (at least attempting to) competing with the likes of Disney and Universal. Shows such as this are an absolute must for the park, and would undoubtedly add something to every visitor's day, even if it could potentially be difficult to market.

So yes, if English Heritage would allow it, this is an excellent idea! However, I think Alton shouldn't try to run before they can walk, the return of the Ice Show (for example) would be a potentially cheaper and easier step in the right direction. With the goal being to provide world-class on-park entertainment, and a year-round resort. This is perhaps a little bit further down the line?

If Alton did ever install fountains, they'd have to be better than the fountains at Pleasure Beach! :P

I would love a major water show at Alton, if Heritage would allow it (although I can't see why it would present a problem).

Efteling do not open late that much and this show is designed to run in daytime too.

If it is marketable then it could be a great new attraction one year instead of a ride.
