Willowside Park

Thu Feb 23, 2012 7:12 pm

A little project I'm working on :)

History

Willowside was the name once given to a large industrial park in the area, and home to one of the largest food manufacturers in the country. Unfortunately, the company was bought out, and production moved to the USA.

Standing derelict and abandoned, the industrial estate was left to rot for many years....until recently. Futura Entertainments have expressed an interest in this golden plot of land, and hope to transform the area into a major theme park soon.

Looks good so far though! Liking the backstory, and look forward to seeing the park unfold :D See's like there is a lot of potential here!

---Update---

Hi, I'm Joe Williams, theme park fan and future employee here at Willowside Entertainments. It has been a long few months, but the former industrial area has now been completely bulldozed and cleared away.

Work has now started on several major installations, so let's have a look...

First up, I can confirm that a B&M inverted coaster is currently under construction to the east of the park entrance area. The ride will be called Gale Force and feature four inversions: A vertical loop, zero g roll and two corkscrews. It doesn't look like the ride will be long, however, the intense experience and extensive themeing will hopefully make up for that.

I'm not sure what this park area will be called just yet, although there is also a Screamin' Swing (which incidentally has already been built, and was being tested earlier this afternoon).

And now we come to the last ride (which I am very excited about). Mission is the park's very first dark ride, and features a top scan enclosed in a space-themed room. I was treated to a tour of this ride today, and managed to grab a shot:

Image

I'm told that various effects will be added later on, so I can't wait to see how this will ride.

That's about all for now. I'll post more updates soon.

:)

I don't believe you did that.

I honestly can't believe you did that.

I have literally just completed the exact same ride, exact same scenery.

Ah, well. Early bird gets the worm. Nice work, by the way ;)
Keep on whistlin', folks.

Oh I'm sorry, NastyPasty. It took me little over five minutes to put together a themed room for the top scan, so please continue your project - I don't mind coming up with something different.

It was bound to happen eventually. How many times has someone subconsciously read about a top scan in the BH tent?  :P

Hi, Joe Williams here. We're just a few weeks away from the park's grand opening, and everyone is busy with the final preparations here at Willowside.

The construction work on Gale Force has now been completed, and today we were putting the ride through its paces. I managed to grab some shots at the staff training event today...

I love this view of the ride from the express car park. The entire layout is visible and very imposing:

Now I don't want to give too much away, but we have a total of seven rides, including two coasters. The other coaster looks to be a Gertslauer spinning model, and is situated at the far end of the park.

Well that's it for now. I'll see you on opening day!

Really liking the look of this so far. You have enticed me.

Are we going to see the park follow a budget and development type storyline or a build the best you can type scenario. Either way, I look forward to the future.

Looking very nice! Gale Force looks great over the car park, I love the view. The architecture at the entrance is very nice, although I would consider using the roof corners and straights on the buildings instead of peaks. Keep it up! :D

Thanks Jammy and Simr - I'm not sure which direction to go just yet. A budget and development type storyline is ideal, as it's the most realistic scenario and also allows time to work on new ride projects.

Willowside was originally going to be a buy-and-plonk type park (think Cedar Point meets Thorpe  :P), but I've gone with the country feel for now.

Ace! Nice theme for the invert! :P The wreckage around the entrance looks really good and I love the concept of an indoor topscan. I agree with SIMR about the roofs though, I would try make them more continuous.

Looking good though!

***Opening Day***

Hi, Joe Williams here. Well, what a busy day. Willowside opened its gates for the very first time, and the public flocked to the park. I was working on Gale Force today, and managed to grab many shots throughout the day.

The park didn't open until 9.00, yet the express car park was already full at 7.30am
Image

Huge queues had already formed outside the main gates by 8.00am

Willow Walk

The little French cafe with the blue and white parasols makes wonderful coffee. Definitely recommended if you're visiting soon!

The area of the park I work in is called "Wild Lands" and features the Grand Splash log flume, Gale Force and Cyclone (Screamin' Swing):

The lockers and Cyclone

Grand Splash (excuse the awful crane in the background. Unfortunately, there is still some building work going on)

Gale Force, Cyclone and the games stalls

And finally, Mission (which saw horrendous queues throughout the day, although the ride was quiet during the evening)
Image

We rounded off the night with a wonderful fireworks display, and there was live music after - it was a magical evening.

I do have hundreds of pictures from today, so will be uploading more of my best shots soon. Stay tuned!

:)

This is looking great! Really nice pathwork, and the supporting of Grand Splash is really well done.

I have to say, I love the picture of Willow Walk! The foliage is great!

***Warning, big update here***

---------------------------------------------------

Hi, it's Joe Williams. I've finally got round to uploading more of my favourite shots from opening day.  Sorry for the delay, but it's been very hectic on the park the last few days.

First, let's have a look at another area of the park...

Willow Wood takes on the theme of an enchanted or haunted forest. There are two rides here (there are plans to install several new attractions soon): Will-o'-the-wisp (a Gertslauer spinning coaster) and Forest Flyer. Forest Flyer is a second hand waveswinger model, and has been rethemed to look like a tree.

There are two new restaurants that will open soon (built by outside franchises)

Updates on Willow Wood soon, but for now I'll leave you with more pictures from opening day

Image

Grand Splash (excuse the building work and ride workshop)
Image

The arcade centre and shops (most of the shops are due to open later in the season)
Image

The gift shop and arcade centre. Much of the park and the rides are sponsored

Parrot pizza and buffet with outdoor pavilion seating - if you like pizza you'll love this place
Image

The park attracted a record number of visitors on opening day. I can tell by talking to guests that the park and rides were well received.

That's all for now.

:)

Great work. :D

I love the way that the rides interact with the paths.

Maybe add some more trees around the paths, but other than that brilliant. :D

Thanks Ryan! About the trees - I want keep the park as bare as possible at the minute. It just helps give the impression of a park in its first year  :P
