What do you do for a living?

Fri Jun 19, 2009 2:09 pm

I was thinking to myself the other day and I realised that most people on this forum, while great friends, I actually have no idea what some of you do! I thought maybe make a new topic to see what people say! :)

I'm a CSA at a local Co-op and to be honest, I'm quite enjoying my job. :D

So what about you all, what do you do?

Well...

Long answer - I work for an outsourcing IT company. Currently in a fairly cushy, quiet position creating new accounts/deleting old one/increasing storage space and such like for Westminster City Council.
I have almost no technical knowledge whatsoever. It's just a lot of dragging/dropping/clicking/copying/pasting/typing usually. The fact I'm posting this in the middle of a working day must give you some clue as to the nature of my employment.

Short answer - I work in IT.
[size=90]For some things there is no rational explanation. There is no way out. There is no happy ending to this story. Welcome to the unknown. Welcome to eternal darkness.

I'm a 'Lighting and Vision Controler' for the BBC, at Television Center in London.

It sounds alot more improtant than it is! My main job is 'racking' the cameras. Basicly, the cameraman/woman moves, points, zooms and focuses the camera, but I control the exposure and colour balance by remote control. This is so that all the different cameras can match each other.
On a music show like Later, with 6 cameras and flashing coloured lights this can get quite hectic!

I sometimes also operate the lighting consoles for either conventional or automated lights.

I can work on just about any show thats made there, but my regulars are Sport (Football focus /Score /Match of the Day / Inside Sport etc), Later With Jools, TMi, Alan Tichmarsh (not a BBC show, but ITV hire our studios).
I Have occasionaly worked on Eastenders, or 'big events' like Children in Need.

In other words... I get paid to watch telly, press buttons and twiddle knobs! :P

Electrician & Qualified Pyrotechnican.

Started off pretty much from school into an aprenticeship to do electrical installation for 5 years, went through college and passed.

2008 I took my exams with the British Pyrotechnics Association to become a freelance pyrotechnican. Notable jobs include World Rally Championships, BBC Wales, Birmingham City Council, Merlin Entertainments.

No wonder Graham Norton moved over!

I'm nearing the end of my second year of a three year mechanic course at Telford College.

I am a freelance radio presenter but have to drive a taxi as well to earn a living. Radio presenting isnt that lucrative unless your a big name. Its great fun though :)

I work for a relatively small and unheard of supermarket chain as a Team Leader for its non-food catalogue operations.

Bet you didn't know that! :P

In my day to day life I am a 1st year medical student at Keele University (hopefully be a 2nd year, results depending on the 2nd July!)

This summer I will be a "Traffic Enumerator" for Stafford Council. My job includes checking the progress of a plant disease thats slowly spreading through Cannock Chase forest. Quite enjoying the prospect of it to be honest - spend my entire summer outside (I wanted to do something different), i'm working with my best mate, and it doesnt pay too badly either!

Sometimes the weathers bad, but its nothing a raincoat and a thermos flask of coffee doesnt fix!

My usual response is somethingtodowithcomputers in the hope they won't follow and ask me to fix their home PC.

Reality is that I'm the IT manager for a small UK business with four sites across the UK. The entire systems are designed and maintained by me. I handle anything that plugs into any kind of wall socket at all. PC - Telephone - intelligent saw - It's all me :(
