TTF sex scandal!

Tue May 29, 2012 2:08 pm

There, now I've got your attention. :)

Something very important is happening in the UK, that will affect many of us. As you may have seen in the news, there is a big debate currently ongoing about the introduction of gay marriage in the UK. David Cameron has announced his tentative plans to legalise it in parliament, with the support of the Liberal Democrats and most Labour MPs. However, there's been a huge backlash from the religious right as well as many Conservative MPs. Since 2005, same-sex couples have been allowed to obtain Civil Partnerships, which have all the legal benefits of marriage. This was a huge leap forwards, and full gay marriage will be another small step forwards.

The reason this campaign is so important is not so much about winning gay marriage, it's about not losing. Allowing bigots and homophobes to defeat this proposal could give them the confidence to launch a new resurgence of homophobia, which could rewind the clock on gay rights by decades. Gay marriage will be great, a small final step in what the Labour government started with Civil Partnerships. But losing this vote in parliament could have disastrous consequences and allow hatred, bigotry and fear to triumph over tolerance, acceptance and love.

But what can I do about it Sam?

It's very easy! All I ask is for five minutes of your time. :)

Step 1

Join the 57,926 people who have already signed the petition created by the Coalition for Equal Marriage. Your signature is vitally important, as the opposition Coalition for Marriage claim to have 535,860 already. Don't let them trick parliament into thinking the majority in Britain are hate-filled bigots.

Step 2

The Home Office have launched a consultation on introducing gay marriage. Basically it's a very short questionnaire to find out what the public think about the proposals. Please fill it out to tell the government your thoughts, it takes less than 5 minutes!

Step 3

'Like' the Coalition for Equal Marriage on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. You can also 'like' Out4Marriage on Facebook and Twitter. Oh, and don't forget to post below when you've completed the three steps! :D

I've done it all Sam! What now?

Once you have completed all three steps, you are eligible for a custom user bar from me, where you can proudly show your support for equal marriage in your signature! Just PM me with a screenshot of the "Thankyou for completing..." page at the end of the government consultation and I will send you a personalised limited-edition super-awesome userbar to put in your signature. :D

I've done all three steps to help support gay marriage and so now I really hope that Government allow this to happen, no matter the obstacles.

Completed all parts.

Not sure with regarding the home office survey, why the need for civil partnerships would need to remain with these being exclusively for same sex couples.

Got to admit, I'm not surprised at all that a number of conservative MPs are planning to rebel, despite the fact i'm a Tory myself and support the proposals.

You still have to remember that at least 220 MPs from the conservatives are planning on voting for the proposal, if you rolled back 15-20 years that number would have been a hell of a lot smaller.

All the proposal is really doing is allowing the specific term marriage to be used, not really that much of a big deal tbh.

Couldn't do step 1 but I've filled in step 2. Good luck, although I think this will pass on a majority vote of Tories anyway.

I have not looked into this extensively, but it is my understanding that it's basically just the phrase 'marriage' that people are fighting for - or the title.

If a civil partnership gives identical rights to homosexual couples as marriage does to heterosexual couples, what is the problem?

Why would any homosexual couple want to be aligned with a religious phrase when that religion decrees that your relationship is sinful or whatever?

Urgh, I was just going to take a screenshot then the screen changed.

Anyway it's great to see the support this is gaining - not that I would expect any less from TTF. I think that the majority of people in society care enough for equal rights for this to get passed, or at least get the support that it needs.

Marriage is NOT a religious institution.

And even if it was, then you could say it's to show religion that they can't have their own way.

Why should two people who love each other not be allowed to do what other people who love each other can do just because they happen to love someone of the same gender?

5 minutes my posterior!! Took me the best part of a week to wade through all that! (I'm a time traveller obvs  ;) )

Done all three steps (with a flamboyant flourish at the end)! :D

Just because we're gay doesn't mean we don't want to be miserable like straight people!

I've previously signed the Coalition for Equal Marriage petition a while back...can I still have one of them user bar things? Pleeease?

Edit: just did the government consultation thing, didn't have the chance to take a screenshot, just said 'thank you' and returned to the home office home page. Might be because I am on an iPod.

Marriage in this country has its roots from religious acknowledgment/endorsement/whatever.

A civil union provides a couple with all of the same rights, privileges and benefits that a marriage in a church brings.

I just do not see how there is an equality issue here, it's simply a different name for what is de facto identical?
